September 2019 BeautyFIX Review

cover of info booklet all products inside booklet and more info back of booklet

This box comes with a booklet detailing each of the items included. We have 9 (!!!) different items this month, so strap in!

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture CC Cream, 0.85 fl oz. -  Estimated Value $7.00 (Buy 5.1 oz for $42.00)

You all already know that in terms of hair, my heart already belongs to OUAI and Davines, but I have always found the Caviar line to be solid. This particular cream smells out-of-this-world amazing, and I would use it just so my hair smelled like this. You can use this on damp hair before you style or air dry for less frizz and some shine! I used it on dry strands and still noticed those benefits.

Josie Maran 100% Argan Oil, 0.5 fl oz  - Estimated Value $14.41 (Buy a full-size 1.7 fl oz for $49.00)

I have always thought this brand of argan was a little pricy, but I can't deny the quality is there if you love having this oil in your routine. This is the sort of oil you can literally use anywhere: hairs, nails, face, dry skin, the list goes on. The versatility is what makes it a staple in many minimalist beauty routines! I personally prefer a few more bells and whistles but if you are looking to start adding oil to your skincare routine, this is a great place to start. I found that this particular bottle was a really luxurious step after a serum and provided a massive boost in my skin's hydration. I also added a drop of lavender oil and used it on my legs instead of lotion.

Erno Laszlo Hydraphel Skin Supplement, 0.5 fl oz - Estimated Value $4.41 (Buy a full-size 6.8 fl oz for $60.00)

I have tried this stuff before and I absolutely love it. Don't let that tiny bottle fool you, a little goes a long way if you use fingertips instead of cotton balls to apply. The texture is watery and honestly a little slimy at first, but I say that lovingly. My skin drinks it up! Use this before your serum and moisturizer at night to prep your skin and calm it down after deep cleansing. In addition to being more moisturized, my skin needs less serum and cream after, meaning I use less product, which makes me very happy indeed.

Vichy LiftActiv Peptide-C Anti-Aging Moisturizer, 0.51 oz - Estimated Value $11.77 (Buy a full-size 1.69 oz for $39.00)

This little sample is in a heavy-duty glass pot that feels pretty fancy! Peptides are really fantastic for your skin when it comes to anti-aging, and this cream is full of them. It also feels like velvet on your skin and smells so clean and pretty. This isn't quite heavy enough to be the last step in my nightly routine, but I would still classify it as medium-heavy on most skin types.

Murad Night Fix Enzyme Treatment, 0.17 fl oz -Estimated Value $11.90 (Buy a full-size 1 fl oz for $70.00)

I tend to enjoy Murad products, and this was no exception. It is a lightweight serum that I applied after a toner and before my night cream. Because it has hyaluronic acid, peptides, and niacinamide, it is a great choice for an anti-aging routine. The great texture and clean scent are added bonuses!

VERSO Foaming Cleanser, 0.85 fl oz - Estimated Value $11.18 (Buy 3.04 fl oz for $40.00)

I didn't notice a lot of "foaming" with this cleanser, but that was fine. It still did a great job of removing makeup and dirt and leaving my skin feeling refreshed. It also has a really nice, clean scent and wasn't overly drying.

bkr Tutu 500 ml Glass Water Bottle - Retail Value $38.00

This might be hard to believe, but this is only my second ever bkr water bottle from a subscription. My first one was a teal color but I like this pale pink so much more. It is a perfect size for my purse and I find myself carrying it often, though not for myself. Since we adopted our standard poodle recently we go on loads of walks and I found that this in my bag with a collapsible silicone water bowl is perfect for keeping Tucker hydrated without hauling around a jug of water.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, 2 oz - Retail Value $12.00 (they also offer a 6 oz size for $32.00)

Some of you know that I have eczema on my legs and if you suffer from this too, you know finding a perfect moisturizer is a pain. Use the wrong one and your skin is MAD for days. I was excited to see that eczema was specifically mentioned on the front of this tube and I really, really liked it on my legs. My redness was slightly reduced and I had zero itch. Winning! No eczema? No worries. This is still a great moisturizer for chapped elbows and dry knees.

TOCCA Florence Perfume, 1.5 ml - Estimated Value $2.28 (Buy a full size 50 ml for $76.00)

Finally, our last item is a perfume that has -no joke- caused me to question my own identity. If you have been reading my reviews for a while, you know I am partial to manly scents with leather, wood, and resin notes. The most glaring exception that that was a bottle of TOCCA Cleopatra an ex-boyfriend bought me in college. It was light, feminine, and floral, but it had a backbone of musk, citrus, and patchouli. I adored it. Well, I must have some weird thing for the TOCCA brand, because this is another scent that is way outside of my wheelhouse. This is a white floral explosion of gardenia, tuberose, and jasmine, and there is nothing masculine about it. There is a slight woodsy musk hidden at the bottom, but it is hard to notice. It also features violet leaf, one of my favorite notes ever! When I wear this I feel like such a LADY. What is happening to me?? This is my first fragrance purchase of the season and I am having an identity crisis. But I also can't wait for it to arrive!

Verdict: This $24.95 BeautyFIX box has an estimated value of $125.95, which is great for a $25 box. I really, really enjoyed this month. It was skincare heavy, and had some great brands. The standouts for me would be the Vichy cream, Murad treatment, and the perfume that has really tossed me for a loop. I get that the water bottle may not excite some people, but I love the color and it has already been super useful. This was a really great assortment and one of the better boxes I have gotten from this sub. If you are a skincare junkie, this continues to be a really great box.

Just wondering if anyone noticed that the insert that describes all the products listed the Josie Morgan Oil as the “Light” version? I looked up the products and packaging online- the picture on the insert isn’t the Light version, but the name and description is for the Light version, and I received the regular oil. I would much rather have the Light version for my acne prone skin, oh well!

Thank you so much. I have read that but didn’t know if it was true but it does make sense. So other than heavy days when I might need to exfoliate, I’ll do what you said. I get a lot of the little cleanser samples in these boxes and i always think should I spend money on something being washed away? 👍❤

Beatyfix is my favorite subscription and I loved this month! I’ve found a new favorite in the Vichy, and the Lazlo! Beautyfix always provides a great curation of ultra-high quality. I love that the focus is on skin and hair. I’ve said it before, if I could only have one subscription, Beautyfix would be my choice.

I have skipped the past 3 or so months and so far no FOMO. Can’t believe that bottle RV is almost $40! Easy pass

Paula

So agree with this. And when an overpriced bottle is your big ticket item in a skincare box, you know they’ve gone downhill (More like Birchbox now). This has really been a $15 sub lately, at best. When they start giving us a full size, big ticket skincare item again, i’ll come back!

I’m going to put this here as this is a skincare box so maybe someone would know. I was always told in my many years🙀 that it doesn’t pay to spend a lot on face cleansers (the regular kind that just wash, not special exfoliating ones) because they aren’t on your face long enough to really do anything care wise. And whatever may be in them gets washed away. I see a lot that have everything but the kitchen sink in them and the high prices with them. Dies anyone know if this is really the case? Am I missing out on something that may be important in any of them? Or does this theory make sense. Any thoughts would be appreciated ✌

Paula

You can say this about ANY skincare (don’t spend a lot). It’s all about your skin and what works for it.

I’m actually the most picky about my cleansers, since they set the stage for the rest of my routine. I feel the same way about toners, and my daytime moisturizers.

I’ve tried soooo many cleansers and for me, and I regularly use several. Which one I use depends on: the time of day, time of year, if I’m wearing makeup, if I plan to mask afterwards, if I plan to use BHA or AHA afterwards, if I am putting on makeup afterwards, and if I’m dealing with a breakout. Price isn’t the deciding factor! It’s how it makes me and my skin feel after the wash!

I mostly use Paula’s Choice and Korres cleansers. I also love Purlisse. 🙂

No, you’ve got it right. The only thing you need in a cleanser is something that will not strip/disrupt your skin’s natural barrier. I use Equate foaming facial cleanser (available at Wal-Mart for less than $4). It’s the exact same as Cera Ve foaming facial cleanser, the only difference is it’s cheaper. Tons of dermatologists recommend it. I like it as much and most of the time better than any of the expensive one’s I get in these boxes.

This is only true if you don’t have any special skin concerns. As someone with huge pores that easily clog, and who also has reactive skin, I find that a lot of cleansers just don’t cut if for me. Foaming cleansers, in particular, are much too harsh. I’ve tried to CeraVe cleanser you mention and it wrecked my skin. I’ve also tried Cetaphil, Simple, Neutrogena…pretty much any inexpensive “dermatologist recommended” facial cleanser you can think of, and they were all either too drying or didn’t clean my pores enough. I also tried fancier face cleansers like First Aid Beauty and Fresh. Finally, I got a sample of Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip in a beauty box and it literally transformed my skin. No more adult acne, tighter pores, and my skin isn’t dry and stressed out. I happily paid $35 once my sample had run out, and I don’t regret it one bit.

OP, if you have normal skin that isn’t acne-prone or sensitive, you’re probably fine with a decent drug store cleanser. (Though if you wear makeup I recommend using a cleansing balm or oil first.) But there’s nothing wrong with a fancy cleanser, either. As without everything skincare related, Your Mileage May Vary.

I read it too. I think I read it in Caroline Hirons blog and it says exactly what you said. Do not spend a lot of money on cleansers. All they need to do is clean, which basic cleanser can do. Invest in your serum and face cream. That’s why in sub boxes they put a lot full size cleanser (because it is cheap) and tiny tiny cream or serum sample.

Great review Megan 🙂 It sort of makes me wish I had subscribed to this month’s box! I love seeing the skincare products sampled this month… great selection.

I’m currently working my way through all of the samples I have of that First Aid Beauty cream but in the Honeysuckle scent, and oh my gosh, I’m loving it so much! I also have eczema prone skin (although it’s actually been virtually non-existent the older I get), and I agree about how soothing and gentle it is. Plus, a little goes a long way! I actually saw large tubs of that cream at TJ Maxx for a couple of months earlier this year (I think for only $19.99, but could be less… I know they weren’t more than $20), but I never bothered to grab one because I had never used it before and I didn’t feel like spending $19.99 on it to try it out, but now I’m kicking myself hard for skipping out on it. lol! Hopefully, they’ll get more in stock!

Sephora usually does big tubs of the FAB moisturizer (original/I scented) for $15 for Black Friday!
