Love with Food Deluxe September 2019 Box Review
There wasn’t an information card this month.
There is often product literature or coupons. Usually it relates to items in the box, but sometimes it doesn’t. If you're curious about Naked Wines, Megan can give you all the details.
Legendary Foods Buffalo Blue Wing Seasoned Almonds (1.5 oz) – Buy 4 oz for $5.99
I like these quite a lot. Do they taste like hot wings? I have no idea, never having eaten a hot wing (I’ve been vegetarian for 26 years). But they are pretty tasty. (We’ve gotten them at least twice before from Love With Food, though.) These do contain dairy, which is fine by me.
Ekoa Pure Banana Dried Fruit Bar (1.23 oz) – Buy 12 for $21.99
This is just dried banana (without preservatives, so it’s brown, as you can see). If you like Barnana or Banana Bites, you will probably also enjoy this. It is a good way to get some potassium without worrying about bananas on your counter going bad in a few days. This was a new item for me.
Stryve Biltong Snacks Spicy Peri Peri (2.25 oz) – Retail Value $7.99
Biltong is apparently different from beef jerky but I don’t know how. This was the most expensive item in the box but I am going to have to pass it along to someone else because my husband is not a fan of dehydrated meat and of course I don’t eat any meat at all. Lately I feel there have been more non-vegetarian items in Love With Food than there used to be.
Bush’s Crisp Roasted Chickpeas in Roasted Garlic (0.77 oz)
I can’t find a link to these online anywhere. I think it might be a new product. I am all about finding new snacks so I was happy to see these. (We’ve received a different flavor in the past.) I don’t know if I’d call them “crisp,” as they were actually pretty starchy and *didn’t* put me in fear of breaking my teeth as some chickpea snacks do. The garlic was noticeable but not overpowering.
Know Better Cookie in Double Chocolate (2.01 oz) – Buy 8 cookies for $14.99
These are grain-free and gluten-free and you can tell. There are various strategies for coping with grain-free baking and this one seems to have gone the route of almonds and eggs in terms of ingredients (I guessed that before I even read the label). I would probably just as soon have a cookie made with wheat flour, but if you have dietary reasons to avoid dairy and/or grains, this may work for you. The flavor isn’t bad – these are sweetened with allulose, which is a low-calorie monosaccharide.
Nature’s Garden Cranberry Health Mix (1.2 oz) – Buy 42 bags for $34.99
This is a repeat item although it’s not bad. It has various nuts, fruits, and seeds, a little bit of iron, and has no added sodium. If you are watching your salt intake, this would be a great option, and it is reasonably well-balanced in protein, fat, and carbohydrates.
Emily’s Daily Nuts and Fruit (0.85 oz) – Buy 15 for $26.25 (found here for $19.75)
This is another repeat item and one that is similar to the cranberry health mix above. This one has a bit more fruit and fewer nuts, a tiny bit of sodium, and more carbohydrates than fat or protein (since there are fewer nuts). One nice thing about getting both items is that if you are looking for a trail mix, you can compare slightly different products and see which works better for you.
Kodiak Cakes Bear Bites Honey (1.06 oz) – Buy 9 oz for $5.50
We got these just last month. They are graham crackers but they are whole grain and they contain some protein (from milk protein concentrate). These are vegetarian but not vegan (have dairy, eggs, and honey). These are not bad for graham crackers, especially ones that have been modified to alter the nutrition profile. There are supposed to be three shapes but most of ours were the paw design (and many were broken).
Oloves Chili and Oregano (1.1 oz) – Buy 10 bags for $32.78
Take the price with a grain of salt; I spent awhile looking and I’m not sure I’d pay $3.23 for a small number of olives when you can get a whole jar of them for not much more. (Though the single-serve pouches are convenient.) My husband doesn’t like olives so I got all of these to myself and, well, they will alter your breath in not such a good way but they are delicious if you like olives.
Olyra Breakfast Biscuits in Cinnamon Tahini (1.76 oz) – Buy a 6-pack for $29.99
These are popping up nearly every month in Love With Food. I’m almost certain we’ve had this flavor before. These are a little dry and after the fact, I realized I should’ve put the chocolate spread (see below) on them. Or if you are really having them for breakfast, add some yogurt or peanut butter or just dunk them in coffee if you are a coffee person.
Field Trip Maple BBQ Pork Stick (1 oz) – Buy 20 for $40 (found here for $30)
I’ll be honest, I don’t know if this is a repeat or not, because the meat products received come in and then go out right away to people who will actually consume them. We seem to get at least one or two meat sticks per month. I know they work well for some of the current low carb or grain-free diets (keto and paleo, for example).
Papa’s Skinless Popcorn Pops in Sweet and Salty (0.42 oz) – Buy 5 oz for $3.79
My husband said of these “we’ve had them before” and “they remind me of Popcorners.” And he’s not wrong. (Specifically the kettle corn version of Popcorners.) We *have* had this exact flavor before. They don’t remind me of popcorn at all, they are processed in some way. I suppose if you have problems with popcorn skins sticking in your teeth, this could be an alternative. I think I would prefer this snack in a savory flavor rather than a sweet flavor.
Harvest Snaps Black Bean Snack Crisps in Southern Style Barbecue (2 oz) – Buy 3, 3 oz bags for $9.99
I used to eat Snapea Crisps all the time so I was interested in trying these. These are super starchy and maybe you do end up swallowing a little, but a ton sticks on your teeth, too. The flavor was pretty strong and I’d avoid this one if you have any issues with your gums. I am glad I got a chance to try these, but I’ll probably stick to some of the other flavors instead.
Lekkco Belgian Dark Chocolate Spread (0.71 oz) – Buy 2, 8.8 oz Jars for $19.99
There are SO MANY chocolate spreads out there. It’s just not a product category I turn to, pretty much ever, so I let my husband eat this, and he seemed to like it. It is dark chocolate that is nut-free and vegan (so if you are wanting to avoid products like Nutella, this may be one way to go). The product page on Amazon (linked to in the product name) has fondue-type pictures, so that may be another way to use it.
Smart Tart in Strawberry Chia (1.97 oz) – Buy 12 for $28.98
This is supposed to be a healthy alternative to Pop-Tarts. I kind of have the same feelings about them as I do about Pop-Tarts, from a flavor perspective – I want to see more filling and less crust. This has 9 grams of sugar as well as some sugar alcohols, but also has protein and fat (from chia). I ate it without putting it in the toaster because that’s how I do Pop-Tarts, too (or how I would do them if I had eaten one in the past 20 years). I would probably like this a lot with frosting on top, but any good style of frosting would require a lot of sugar and they are trying to avoid that.
Welch’s Fruit Snacks Superfruit Mix (0.8 oz) – Buy 10 bags for $9.95
This is another repeat item from very recently. It is not vegetarian so I gave it to my husband. I note these are from a third-party seller on the Walmart website and the review there says you can get them a lot cheaper in the store, so that is something to keep in mind if you would like to purchase them. These have some fruit purees, including from exotic fruits (pomegranate, acai, passionfruit) and they are fairly high in sugar, but they are also individually packaged and the serving size is small so it’s easy to not go overboard and eat too many.
Zego Just Fruit Blueberry Bar (0.88 oz) – Buy 12 bars for $16.99
This has a nice color but the first two ingredients are pear puree and pear juice concentrate, and blueberry juice concentrate is a distant third, and I’d call the flavor generically fruity. These are free of the top 12 allergens (I love how they say “no sea creatures” in the benefits list on the product page). We have received this before but I think it has been a few months. If you are looking for allergen-free snacks, this satisfies pretty much all of those requirements as well as being vegan and gluten-free.
Verdict: There were 17 items in the September 2019 Love With Food Deluxe Box. There were definitely some new items, some of which I liked a lot and some of which I was less enthusiastic about, but I would never expect to like every single thing in a snack box – people are looking for too many different things in food to please every subscriber. What I do like is seeing new and different items, so I wasn’t super happy about the repeats (fruit snacks, cranberry health mix, Kodiak cakes, skinless popcorn pops, Emily’s nuts and fruit, blueberry bar, almonds, and breakfast biscuits, which is almost half of the box, by my count). Don’t get me wrong, I do like most of those things, it’s just that I’ve had them before, so I know about them, and I’d like to learn about some new snacks instead.
