Meowbox August 2019 Review
Meowbox has a lot of exclusive toys that are usually pretty popular with my cats. From my perspective, it’s nice to see some things that don’t turn up in other cat subscription boxes:
The information card typically just gives a URL for finding out more information about the items in the box. The picture is adorable, as usual. This month had a safari theme.
Monkey Business Ring Chaser – Retail Value $8.50
This is really cute. Sneaky liked it a lot, both the monkey end and the ring end that’s supposed to go on your finger. The string is some type of elastic and stretchy, and of course there’s catnip in the monkey. Dangler and wand toys are favorites around here and we are always happy to see them.
Safari Hat – Retail Value $5.00
I wasn’t sure if this was a toy or a costume item so I tried using it as both (the product page says it is intended as both!). Monkey wore it and Sneaky played with the strings. It is kind of crinkly and makes for a good interactive toy.
Le Sharma Trading Wool Snake – Retail Value $5.00
I am always happy to see items from this company in a subscription box. These are made in Nepal with 100% wool. More importantly, Angus thinks they are awesome. I recently cleaned out under a large piece of dining room furniture and found some other Le Sharma toys that he’d put under there. Right now Angus is on mirtazapine (an appetite stimulant) and a side effect of this medication is that cats will wander around making loud noises with toys in their mouths (sounds bizarre, but Mr. Kitty did the same thing way back when so I have seen this exact behavior in 100% of my cats who have taken this medication). Last night Angus started doing this with the little snake toy in his mouth. Now I have to check the floor before I let the dog out so Angus doesn’t lose his new favorite toy.
Tippy the Toucan – Retail Value $6.00
This is just a bundle of interesting textures in one toy. Madison liked the feathers and Sneaky and Angus both enjoyed tugging on the legs. No one managed to damage it so I guess it is pretty well-made!
Ourpets Zoo Crew Plush Animals Zebra – Retail Value $8.99
This price seems a little steep but this item is sold out in a lot of places. It is unusual to receive an existing toy rather than a custom one in Meowbox, but this certainly does fit with the theme. This is a small catnip plush with a rope tail and some fuzzy hair and Monkey appreciated all of the different textures. I’ve put this in his morning sunny spot (the cats move around to different windows throughout the day as the sun moves through the sky).
My Mighty Lion Captain Cod (2.65 oz) – Retail Value $3.99
From what I can tell, My Mighty Lion is the Canadian version of My Little Lion (probably for trademark reasons?). Meowbox is actually from Canada and so you do tend to receive Canadian treats from time to time. Because these aren’t easy to get in the US, I’ve linked to the My Little Lion version that you can buy. These are semi-moist treats and my cats think they are awesome.
Here are some kitty photos for you:
Angus enjoys some of the toys from the box.
Madison inspects the toucan. He is kind of skittish and kept running off so you won’t see any other pictures of him this time around.
Monkey sniffs a treat and models the hat.
Sneaky performed well for this photo session! I’m sure she’d be embarrassed if she knew I was putting these pictures on the internet, though.
Verdict: I calculated a total value of $37.48 for August’s Meowbox. That’s a really good deal for a cat subscription box. Meowbox usually comes in quite nicely in terms of value, but perhaps just as importantly, my cats really like the toys in this box. I thought the theme was cute and everything stuck to it really well, even the treats this time.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It is too late for the August box, so your subscription would likely start with September, but you can buy some of the individual items from the Meowbox store; just click the links in the item names.
Value Breakdown: At $22.95 for the subscription plus shipping, you are paying approximately the following per item:
- Monkey toy $5.20
- Hat $3.06
- Snake $3.06
- Toucan $3.67
- Zebra $5.50
- Treats $2.44
