Paletteful Packs September 2019 Review
This month’s theme is all about tri-tone pencils! September’s Paletteful Packs Premier includes enough supplies to create fifteen 9”X12” tri-tone pencil sketches!
Every month you will receive a handy little sheet that includes all of the boxes contents, retail values, and helpful hints for each product.
This side of the card details the month’s “Prompt and Challenge.” This month you can make a drawing based on your interpretation of the prompt and post it on social media. For September the prompts are Last, Old, Cozy, and Coffee. This month they even gave an October Box Preview: Are you ready for the Inktober challenge? 31 days, 31 ink drawings!! OOOO what could it be?!
Koh-I-Noor Tri-Tone Multi-Colored Pencils - Listed Value $27.95, Retail Value $15.95
Look at these awesome colored pencils!! I honestly have never seen these before! The core of these pencils is made of 3 different colored leads that are braided together. They use a special process that ensures the colors alternate with minimal wrist movement. Not only that, but they carefully select color combinations that are typically found in nature for the best look! I noticed these pencils glide smoothly and color very well. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with colored pencils (besides Crayola) but these are some sweet pencils! I had a lot of fun with these, and can’t wait to play with them more. I noticed they are quite popular for coloring adult coloring books- and will definitely be trying this!
Koh-I-Noor Blender - Listed Value $1.85 (2 pack found here for $3.61)
Although a blender did come with the 11 pack set, they sent an extra one for further smoothing colors and creating a complex appearance in your artwork. I used this a little bit, but need a little more practice!
Strathmore 400 Series Bristol Paper Pad - 9X12 - Listed Value $12.59, Retail Value $9.45
I am loving the paper supply I get with this subscription! This month we received a pack of 15 sheets of this lovely vellum surface paper. The colored pencils just seem to glide on this paper! I really appreciate the heavy weight of this paper- it really feels quality, and makes my artwork lay nicely in a frame!
Koh-I-Noor Two Hole Pencil Sharpener - Listed Value $3.65, Retail Value $2.59
They really pulled out all the stops for this box! I love the fact they thought to send a pencil sharpener! This two-hole sharpener worked really well for sharpening the included pencils, and has a little protector to contain all of the pencil shavings. I used it on the dull colored pencils and they now look brand new!
Art Alternatives Pigment Liner Set of 3 - Listed Value $6.99
I am so in love with these pens! They are acid-free, water-based, and fade and water-resistant when dry. They have 3 different tips, including the tiny 0.1mm size for precision work! They are definitely ideal for illustration, graphic and technical drawings, sketching, and lettering. I love using these and while I was unable to find them online, I will keep searching!
Here we have a photo of all of the included supplies swatched. Aren’t those colored pencils amazing? I love the color combos they have come up with- I might just have to order some more!
Pumpkin Project
Fall is in the air, and with fall comes my favorite: PUMPKINS! I did a rough sketch and couldn’t wait to try out these cool pencils to fill it in!
I am loving the way these pencil lead colors are braided and color so well!
This is my finished product! I’m definitely not a professional, but had a lot of fun trying these colored pencils out!
Apple Card
My son just started first grade, and when he started preschool I made a special note to put in his lunch box each day. When he started going to kindergarten he asked if I would continue sending a note each day, and this has continued on into first grade. Because I run out of ideas, I love that this box helps me come up with new stuff! I can’t wait to send him this personalized apple note tomorrow!
Paw Patrol Card
My youngest son is starting pre-school tomorrow and he, of course, insisted he needs notes as well. When I asked him for suggestions he wanted Paw Patrol. I only had a couple minutes, so I whipped this up. It’s a little rough looking, but it shows just how detailed you can get with that tiny pigment liner!
The Verdict: Each and every month I look forward to Paletteful Packs and they definitely delivered this month! I love that they send all of the items to create multiple pieces of artwork from start to finish. I have never seen tri-tone colored pencils before, and I have to say I am a fan! I can’t wait to spend a little more time on a landscape sketch in the near future! While I am far from being an artist, I love playing around with these products and sharing them with my kids. It’s such a great experience!
This subscription costs $35.95 a month. The content card shows a listed value of $53.03 in this box. I found everything but the pigment liners online for $29.80. If you include the listed value for those pens, you would be right around the cost of the subscription. I do want to mention that if you were to purchase each item individually, you would likely spend more than that in shipping costs. Even though this month the value wasn’t over the monthly cost, I was still very happy with it. Paletteful Packs curates each month so wonderfully, and you must account for the experience!
