SlutBox by Amber Rose is a lifestyle and beauty subscription geared towards sex-positive people (often containing lube, condoms, pasties, and other sex-forward items). It's $29.99 a month and tends to be a little controversial because of its name as well as some of the items included. While they've ditched the loud pink "SlutBox" emblazoned packaging, they still send a curious, random collection of makeup, apparel, and accessories in the now plain brown box.
NSFW – this post may not be safe to read at work (mainly, just the lube and the name of the box). Better safe than sorry, right?

SlutBox by Amber Rose August 2019 Review
It is SlutBox review time, everyone! Lately, I've got to thinking that I might be too harsh on this box. They've changed over the year+ they've been around and are including a lot fewer samples (there used to be tons) and instead have been sending a smaller selection of full-size items. They've also started including "custom" items with Amber Rose branding. SlutBox seems to be much more of a beauty/lifestyle box for younger people than anything too shocking or "slutty". I'm certainly not the target audience for this subscription and a comment left by reader Jane in the May review made me realize that this might be a great option for people who aren't me. ;P That being said, their listed RVs are almost always inflated and the makeup they send aren't always brands known for their quality, so I'm still gonna do my due diligence, BUT I must say that the curation has been a little more cohesive and it's fun in a young-person kinda way.
Now that I've said my piece, let's dive in, shall we?
This month's theme is "Cherry Bomb" and has a short intro from MUVA in the booklet that references The Runaways song that immediately got stuck in my head when I read the front (check it out here if you also want it stuck in your head). The booklet goes through each of the five items with their values. The back has #tbt photos of when the SlutBox team donated to boxes to the Trans Wellness Center in LA back in June.
SlutBox Red Sunnies with Custom Pouch - Listed Value $20.00 (Similar found here for $1.35 without pouch)
While we're on the subject of getting songs stuck in our heads, as soon as I saw these skinny '90s-style sunglasses, TLC songs were running non-stop through my brain. I tried to channel T-Boz in the photo of me wearing these but to no convincing avail. Since I was born in 1980, I was in middle and high school in the '90s and the fashions are cringe-worthy for me to look back at. But just as I thought peace signs and tie-dye shirts were cool back then, many younger people today really want to revive those looks. I get it. After the bucket hat from last month, it doesn't surprise me that these narrow clear-red angular cat-eye sunnies showed up this month. They, of course, aren't as exclusive as they say since I found suspiciously similar ones on AliExpress but they do come with an Amber Rose signature branded pouch to keep them safe in. I can't see myself rocking these, but I know plenty of people in their 20s (or fans of Billie Eilish) may love them. More power to them!
SlutBox Custom Pink Cherry Bomb Reusable Tote - Listed Value $10.00
This is a legitimate custom design, complete with Amber Rose's signature on a tag when it's fully collapsed. This is a sort of knock off of Baggu or any of the foldable grocery totes that are around, but the fabric is a little less luxe. It's a baby pink color and has "Cherry Bomb" written in script on the front in red with illustrated cherries around it. This is great to toss in your purse or in the glove box of your car to reduce plastic bag waste or simply to tote around anything you buy while shopping. I find this to be a super useful item and will happily add it to my arsenal.
Glo By Glory x Benji Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $35.00
Whoa- this palette is HUGE in both physical size (almost 7.5" squared) and the number of colors (12). Not to mention, each pan is an inch and a half in diameter. I am not familiar with @BeautybyBenji but she is a beauty YouTuber with 46.5K subscribers and has her very own collab with a brand called Glo By Glory. There are five metallic shades and seven mattes that mostly stay in the neutral neighborhood with a couple of departures like the teal "Salty" and soft purple "Royalty" (which actually still fits in well with neutrals). Some of the pigments are nice 'n' rich, and others, not so much. Looking at the swatches on my hand, you can see that the Creme (at the very top) barely shows up on my pale skin tone but will probably pop nicely on someone else. They all feel pretty soft and somewhat creamy to the touch, but the darker mattes have a tougher time staying consistent with one swipe. The shimmers are the real stars here (especially that teal, amirite?). I've been experimenting more with eyeshadows these days but I'm still no pro when it comes to identifying the best and how to use them to their full potential.
Here, I did a look using that barely-there-on-me color, Creme, as a base. I then experimented with a bit of Saucy in my crease, Glisten packed onto my lids, and some Lumiere on the corners of my eyes and brow bones. It did take quite a few swipes to get the subtle color you see here, so these don't come off as super pigmented when using a brush, but they are easily buildable. It looked a bit too much to me at first but it's grown on me throughout the day and I am happy to report that it's stayed put five hours later with help of primer and setting spray. I think this is a fun palette to play with and I can see myself reaching for the shimmer colors more which is surprising since I love mattes.
Measurable Difference Posh Matte Liquid Lipstick in Edge - Retail Value $30.00 (Now on sale for $10.00)
The packing I received is different than the image in the booklet as well as on the MD site, but I'm pretty confident it's the same product. So, I LOVE this color. It's such a deep gorgeous red and goes on my lips super opaque with a ton of pigment. BUT- 10 minutes in, it was so dry it was flaking off of my lips. NO! This formula is just terrible and while Megan suggested I mix it with a little gloss to help it out because the color IS so great, I'd just rather use one of the other 30 lipsticks I own. So sad! I also think $30 is pretty steep for this since you could buy a well-known brand from Sephora for that price.
*Check out the last pic of the sunglasses to see it on my lips.
Sutil Lube Body Glide in Vanilla, 2 oz. - Retail Value $15.50
I know y'all get upset when there isn't lube in the box, so everyone can relax. 😉 We've seen this brand before, and their water-based formula is also organic as well as paraben-free and glycerin-free. Out of the four scents, I received the vanilla variety. It has a super lightweight feel that is indeed quite slippery and it actually leaves my skin feeling really soft too.
Verdict: I know we love to hate SlutBox, but this month (while not entirely for me) had five items that break down to just $6/each given the $29.99 cost. Nothing was really all that slutty unless you count the lube and everything else just seems to be lifestyle and beauty items for young people who like to experiment with zany items. The eyeshadow palette wasn't a known brand to me but had a decent selection of colors that were fun to play with and the reusable tote is super useful for those of us who detest plastic bags taking over our homes. As I said earlier, I think their listed values are always inflated which is not cool. Their listed prices have the total RV at $110.50, but I think it's a lot less given that their "custom" items are harder to pin down and I don't think the lipstick is worth $30.

Do you think fewer full-size items make SlutBox better? Have we been too harsh on them? Am I getting soft?
