Universal Yums “Greece” September 2019 Review
Universal Yums is so much fun! I love how this is such a hands-on experience for my family. Not only do we get to eat new and fun treats, but we also get to learn about a new country. We adore this box!
Upon opening the box, you are greeted with a fun, illustrated map of Greece. It includes fun trivia and lovely clipart that really brings the box alive! On the opposing side they include “The Official Yum Awards.” This ballot is where you can cast your vote for the best, 2nd best, worst, and weirdest snacks in the box. If you post your ballot on social media, you have a chance to win more of your favorite snacks! They also include a secret puzzle to decode and a Greek game to play!
I am so excited! This year Universal Yums has come out with their first-ever Halloween box! Here we have a promotional card sharing all of the info to order! How fun does this look?!
Next, we have a detailed pamphlet including all of this month’s snacks, ingredient lists, fun trivia, a recipe, and a clue to next month’s box!
Let’s experience Greece at its finest!
Oriental Saragli
I am loving this syrupy phyllo dough pastry! It is packed with almonds and walnuts and is so sticky and delicious. The phyllo dough was perfectly flaky and tasty. While I’ve had other baklava from previous boxes, I have to say this one is my favorite!
Kritsinaki Pesto Basil
These little breadsticks are so cute and delicious. I love the crunchiness and flavoring of these basil pesto breadsticks. They really pair nicely with a glass of wine. It makes me want to track down more!
Serenata Finger
I am obsessed with wafers and chocolate, so this was a definite win for me! This milk chocolate coated wafer with cocoa cream filling is so rich and tasty! My kids were basically attacking me for it. Not only was it delicious, but look how pretty it is too! That extra chocolate drizzle really took it to the next level!
Tottis Chips Oregano
Next up is this nice sized bag of oregano flavored potato chips. These chips may look identical to Lay’s sour cream and onion chips, but instead of having an onion flavor, they have a deliciously salty and deep oregano flavor. I found them to be quite addicting, and couldn’t keep my hand out of the bag!
Moustokoulouro
My kids were so excited to see this item in the box. My 4-year-old is obsessed with grapes, and cookies, and when he saw the picture of the grape ON the cookie package he could hardly contain himself... that is until he tasted it. The description of this item reads “soft wheat cookies with grape must flavor.” What is must flavor you ask? It’s the thick mixture containing the freshly pressed grape juice, skins, seeds, and stems of the grape. While I appreciate the use of the “must” in these cookies rather than discarding it, I just didn’t care for the flavor. It also was very dry and crumbly, but if you are a mega wine lover, maybe you’ll enjoy this!
Serenata Triplo Hazelnut
Ekkk! Milk chocolate + hazelnuts + wafers + cream filling = LOVE!!! Seriously this chocolate bar is amazing. It honestly tastes a little like a Ferrero Rocher but with more cream filling and in a bigger bar! It literally just melts in your mouth. I need more of these in my life!
Bruschettini Pizza
Check out this nice bag of bread crisps! These bruschetta bites are flavored with cheese, tomato, and basil for a light taste of pizza. I enjoyed these all by themselves, but might just have to add them to my tomato soup for dinner tomorrow night because I’m pretty sure it would be fantastic!
Kings Soft Cookie with Dark Chocolate Chunks
Look at this chocolate-on-chocolate soft cocoa cookie. This was definitely a favorite of the kids. It was so soft and chewy- almost like a brownie. They loved the big dark chocolate pieces, although they did request a large glass of milk because it was very rich! We give it 2 thumbs up!
Minos Nut Bar Peanut & Honey
This was one of my favorites of the month. I am such a sucker for peanut brittle, and this took that to another whole level. The peanuts and honey and sesame seeds were super crunchy and sticky and I loved every bite of it. It was a little hard for my little guys to bite and chew, but I devoured it! I am especially impressed because they are preservative-, gluten-, and lactose-free!
Tsourekaki with Cocoa Cream
This was the largest item in the box, and I’m really excited about it! We received an entire loaf of sweet bread filled with chocolate cream! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this, but I was pleasantly surprised! This very soft, moist bread was just sweet enough, and the chocolate cream surprise was delish! I was happy to sample it! While my younger son wasn’t a fan, my older one kept asking for more!
Frugeli Pomegranate Jelly
We love the little pretty packages in the Yum Bag, and these pomegranate flavored jelly candies were no exception! These little fruit rectangles taste like sugar-coated fruit snacks and my kids gobbled them right up!
Kokos Ouzo
Apparently Greece’s most beloved, most famous, and most popular drink is ouzo which has an anise flavor. These hard candies are also flavored with anise for a black licorice-like flavor. While my mom loves this kind of treat, I’m not really a fan, so while I did try one, I will be sending the rest her way to enjoy!
Kokos Honey Toffee
While I didn’t care for the Kokos Ouzo candy, I gotta say I did enjoy these Kokos honey toffees! They are honey flavored chews that have a perfectly sweet, natural honey flavor. They are deliciously chewy and creamy without a gritty texture. I will gladly eat all these!
The Verdict: We seriously enjoy Universal Yums so much. Each month they curate the box so well, and the included information booklet adds so much to the experience. My kids and I really feel like we were in Greece! This month was probably one of our favorites ever. While I never expect to like absolutely everything in the box, this month came close! My kids always ask when this box is coming and what country it is coming from. It really has created a family experience! We can’t wait to see where the next box comes from. The clue states: “Where we’re headed next, the symphonies give chills, you can hear ‘em in the opera house, the castles- the hills! But when you taste the Yums, the music will be eclipsed, by world-famous chocolates and punchy red chips!" Any ideas?
