BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the small size (my smaller dog weighs 12 lbs and my pug is closer to 28). We recently adopted a 50 lb standard poodle, so we might try a new size in the future!

FYI: Two of my dogs are quite old! Piper (the minpin) has to eat soft food and has trouble with hard treats. Charlie is a pug, and a glutton who will eat LITERALLY anything. They both still really enjoy toys, though it has been years since either of them managed to destroy anything.

If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!).

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

September 2019 BarkBox "Must Squeak TV" Review

Each box arrives with an information card with details about the items included. This month is TV themed, and specifically centered on The Bachelor! There were a few different shows we could have received, including plays on Law & Order, Grey's Anatomy, My So-Called Life, and more!

The September box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.

A lot of these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Click Click Chicky Tenders Dog Treats

These larger, rectangle treats were an instant hit with the boys, though Piper accepted some cheese instead since they were too hard for her fragile teeth. These might be a bit too big for Charlie to indulge in regularly (he is watching his figure) but Tucker is a big boy, and they are perfect for him.

Tucker is the only one who doesn't turn into a total maniac when I open a treat bag. A true gentleman!

That's A Beef! Steak Sticks Dog Treats

Full disclosure here: we normally have a drawer full of Pupperoni. I know, I know, they are kind of junk for dogs, but mine LOVE them and they are soft enough for Piper to enjoy. These are like the fancy, healthier version, and they also lack that offensive Pupperoni smell that I personally hate.

Charlie is always really enthused about all treats, but especially the tube-shaped ones.

The Bache-lemur Toy

I had to laugh at this play on words. Only in a BarkBox would I ever received a dog toy that is a lemur in a tuxedo! Piper was immediately taken by this handsome fellow, though I suspect it was more due to his furry ears and tail than his wit, money, or charm. He was also fluff-free and had a squeaker inside!

Piper's new boyfriend was quickly taken to her favorite perch.

"I'll love you forever... or at least until next month's BarkBox..."

Ring Under the Rosie Toy

How could it even be a Bachelor-themed box without a red rose?! This beauty has a rope inside the stem and crinkle petals. Charlie is our resident crinkle-enthusiast, so I knew this would be his dream toy.

Will you accept this rose?

YES!

Happily ever after.

Chicken Thinkers Stick Chew, Retail Value $3.00

I generally reserve the chews in this box for Tucker because the little ones are older and don't have the strongest teeth anymore. He always appreciates a late-night snack after an evening of bingeing our fave shows.

Verdict: BarkBox always seems to one-up itself every month. I am so amused by this Bachelor theme box and all of the creative and punny toys that my dogs just love. The red rose was my favorite, and Charlie's too! We all appreciate the bags of dog treats, though I wish there has been a softer option for Piper. Regardless, my dogs absolutely love this sub and get really excited when they see the box. It makes me so happy to gift them their new toys and have a massive play session when they arrive.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will get the October box. Customer care let us know that your first box will now always be either their Welcome Box or the current month’s box, followed by the normal schedule the following month.

Value Breakdown: At $35/month + free shipping for this box, each of the 5 items has an average cost of $7.00.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

So Happy to see a review about this set out there, I’ve been super confused by this “ring under the rose” toy. We’re new to Barkbox, my pup is young & not the destructive type so I doubt he’ll actually tear it up so I guess we’ll never get to see the ring but I would love to see what it looks like!

On another note, I’m not sure ours is even the same though because the stem of ours isn’t a rope, it’s a crinkly thing & the top of the rose is hard plastic that squeaks rather than it being a crinkle ball. Also the card that came with ours looked different but I can’t find it anymore, on our card, if I remember correctly, it looked like a ring attached to the rose by a string that was coiled inside of the stem but it was definitely attached, kinda like it unfolded.

so yea… I’m wondering if anyone else got one like this or if anyone’s gotten theirs open.

I have been subscribing to Barkbox for a couple years. It has always been great and I have been really happy with it! I have always timely gotten the box by the 15th of the month. Last month though, I got an email late into the month indicating shipping was delayed and didn’t get the box until the end of the month. I got the same email again this month and no box yet. I’m hoping this isn’t a sign of trouble for the company and wish they were more transparent about what is happening.

I signed up for a year in April for Barkbox. I love barkbox but shipping seems to be more and more of a problem. April – July, shipping was great, we’d get our box somewhere in the middle of the month. Last month I got my box the last week of September. This month I’ve gotten two emails with, “we’re sorry. We’re still working on your box.” Now it’s not supposed to even ship until next week. At this rate I’ll have my October box in November. I’m sad. My pups are sad they’re nearly out of treats.

Great pics! I have had an awful time since signing up with the super chewer box, but I’m semi-hopeful we are back on track. The August box shipped right after I signed up using a 6-month deal. Then September never showed. Then they sent me a code to make up for it. Then they cancelled part of the order I placed using the code, but it looked like they cancelled the whole order. It was a long process, but they finally made it right all around and my October box actually shipped yesterday. I’m hoping this means September was just a fluke. I swear I’ve read reviews on them for years but never had a reason to subscribe and the minute I do, it’s like whoa.

I always love seeing your pictures of the pups, and I love that you rescued Tucker! I have three rescue Jacks and a pug/minpin mix so it’s always great 🙂

The lemur has another toy inside that’s super cute! My dog chewed off the lemurs legs and found it lol

Sadly, this box arrived extremely late and was missing the add-ons. Barkbox never responded to my emails so I had to dispute the charge with my bank.

Well. I got a notice that they didn’t HAVE September boxes, so I’d get a refund and a free October box.

Today my two small dogs’ ” October box” arrived. They’d thrown 2 envelopes of treats and 1/3 of a Velcro toy in the box. How do I know? It has Velcro on the top and bottom and is the torso of a muscle man.
NOT one bit of packaging, no Halloween swag for dog or owner, NOTHING.

This is a case where the reviewers got the gravy and the $$ customers got the bare bone.
Cancelled, and suggest everyone go into this one month to month if you can’t see your way clear to Rescue Box.

I got that same toy. It’s “whole” but the velcro is to switch out and attach with another one of the toys to create a “frakentoy.” Barkbox usually includes 2 packages of treats, a chew and 2 toys. You can also buy more toys from the month’s theme from the online shop. I pay extra to get 3 toys but have always gotten exactly what should be in the box…with exception of the one month they had an issue with the chew so they pulled them and included an extra the next month. I’ve had good luck with CS so if you didn’t get the 2 toys, 2 bags of treats and a chew I’d send them an email.

So sorry but after not getting a Sept. box and the junk they threw in the box for Oct., I cancelled and never want to hear from them for any reason again.

They had excuse after excuse about the Sept. box and it didn’t make a bit of sense. None. This sub used to be great. Now, I’d say even Pet Treater is better.

Also, my small dogs would not chew on a huge Velcro disk on the top of the toy and another on the bottom. They wouldn’t hurt their mouths like that.

10/10 on the dog pictures.
