We have 2 spoilers for the October 2019 Boxwalla Book box! October 15th is the last day to subscribe.
Each October Boxwalla Book box includes:
The first book in the October Book Box is Canadian writer, Mavis Gallant's highly acclaimed collection of short stories: Paris Stories. Often called a writer's writer, her short stories have influenced many writers including Anne Carson and Jhumpa Lahiri. Along with Margaret Atwood, Anne Carson, & Alice Munro, she forms a formidable Canadian quartet, although probably the least known among the four.
Her prose sparkles with clarity, wit and precision and we cannot wait for you to read her.
The second book is Turkish writer, Ahmet Altan's just released, I Will Never See the World Again, a memoir that gets to the essence of reading and writing: why we write & read & what keeps us going. Ahmat Altan was arrested 3 years ago & imprisoned by the Turkish government on what most people understand to be false charges. This book was written in prison and smuggled out of jail as a series of notes & essays to his lawyer & then translated into English. In an open letter (that includes 51 Nobel Laureates) writers like Orhan Pamuk, J.M. Coetzee, Elena Ferrante have called for his release. His is still in prison.
Calling this a prison memoir, however, doesn't quite capture the scope of this book : it is brave, optimistic and uplifting in ways that you will not expect, with profound observations about life, love, religion, reading and writing.
There will also be a fun third something extra in the box!
