Cocotique “Triple Butter” September 2019 Review
This month’s Cocotique box is a Hawaiian Silky takeover box featuring the new “Triple Butter” collection. The six products in this collection feature mango, murumuru, and shea butters. This box features some of the new Hawaiian Silky products and older Hawaiian Silky favs.
The back of the Cocotique info card describes all the products included in this month’s box. It also provides information on where to purchase the products online and exclusive discount codes where available.
Hawaiian Silky Collection Triple Butter Curl Whip Foaming Mousse, 7.5 oz – Listed Value $6.99
This mousse promises to nourish and define curls leaving hair soft, shiny and frizz-free. It’s great for defining a wash-and-go or roller set style.
I used this mousse on my daughter's hair and this was our least favorite of the hair products in this takeover box. I love a mousse that adds a little slip and this mousse has no slip at all. I had to detangle my daughter's hair before applying the mousse.
Hawaiian Silky Collection Triple Butter Curling Buttercreme, 12 oz – Listed Value $7.99
This moisturizing buttercreme promises to define curls, coils, twists, and twist-outs. Like the mousse, it leaves curls moisturized, shiny and frizz-free.
This buttercreme is the shining star of this box. It smells great and really does a good job moisturizing. It worked exceptionally well on my daughter's dry ends. The product goes on white but quickly absorbs in the hair and leaves a subtle shine. This is especially impressive since my daughter's hair color hardly ever allows a shine to come through!
Hawaiian Silky Collection Triple Butter Hydrate & Define Hair Butter, 4 oz – Listed Value $8.99
This butter promises to hydrate dry hair, soften hair, seal in moisture, and add shine. It leaves hair moisturized, more manageable, and less prone to breakage.
I'm not exactly sure how this product is intended to be used. Hawaiian Silky does not do a good job explaining the product's intended use or how the products are made to work together. I ended up using this product, on dry hair, to refresh my daughter's two-strand twists. It added a little shine.
Hawaiian Silky 14-in-1 Miracle Worker, 2 fl oz each – Estimated Value $3.75 (Buy a full-size 8 oz bottle on sale here for $4.95)
This versatile product can be used as a curl refresher, moisturizer or leave-in on relaxed, natural, or braided hair. It's non-greasy, helps detangle hair, soothes an irritated scalp, and adds shine.
I used this 14-in-1 product as a leave-in on wet hair after washing and drying my daughter’s hair. It did make her hair feel soft but it didn’t do anything as far as making her hair easier to detangle. “Miracle Worker” may be a stretch but it does a good job as leave-in.
Hawaiian Silky Gel Activator, 8 oz – Listed Value $5.99 (found on sale here for $3.95)
Formulated with moisturizers and proteins, this gel activator will leave hair soft and conditioned with no flaky build-up. It's recommended for both relaxed and natural hair.
I layered a small amount of this product on top of the mousse and buttercreme to style my daughter's hair in two-strand twists. I used it primarily around her edges. I did notice that the hair was softer but it didn't do anything to make her hair lay flat and smooth. It doesn't have enough hold to function as a gel.
The Verdict: I'm not a big fan of takeover boxes or boxes with too many hair care products. My hair is currently in box braids so I would have opted out of a full box of hair care products especially from a brand that's not already a favorite.
For this review, I used all the products in the box to style my daughter's hair in two-strand twists. She has shoulder-length 4C hair. The buttercreme was by far our favorite product in this month's box. It's an excellent moisturizer and added a nice shine to her hair. The mousse was our least favorite since it actually made my daughter's hair harder to detangle. Once complete, her hairstyle came out cute and her two-strand twists look super hydrated and healthy.
Overall, these products were better than I expected them to be but I still wouldn’t recommend this box. It only includes half of the products in the new Hawaiian Silky Triple Butter collection and two other less impressive older products – one of which wasn't even full-sized.
This Cocotique beauty box costs $25 with free shipping. I estimate the retail value to be $33.71. This is a crappy value for a box that at its lowest usually has a value of more than 2x the cost of the box. Considering that many of the products can be found on sale online, the overall value feels even lower. This box is not a good value.
