Love with Food Deluxe October 2019 Box Review
The box comes with a card (usually) that doesn't actually have much information on it.
There is often product literature or coupons. Usually, it relates to items in the box, but sometimes it doesn’t.
Hello Naturally Whitening Fluoride Toothpaste in Farm Grown Mint (1 oz) - Buy 4.7 oz for $4.99
I guess this toothpaste sample is what you use after you eat all the snacks! Anyway, this is free of SLS and it has fluoride, and those are basically my two qualifications for a toothpaste. It seems to work well and it tastes fine. The only thing I don't like is it really needs to stand on the cap end or it is difficult to get toothpaste out, and I am not so great at keeping things in an upright position around my sink.
Fast Bar (1.55 oz) - Buy 10 bars for $30
So. The concept behind this thing is that it is specially formulated to keep your body in a fasting state even if you eat it. Which I just don't buy at all. You can't eat a bunch of nuts and 8 grams of sugar for a total of 250 calories and call that fasting (or even "low carb"). That being said, this is pretty delicious. I just don't believe the claims. This is using a bunch of fancy language to sell food to people who don't really want to fast.
Pacific Foods Creamy Tomato Soup (8 fl oz) - Buy a 12-pack for $23.99
This is a brand I'm mostly familiar with because of their broths (we use the low sodium vegetable broth they make). I don't think I've tried any of their soups. But I am looking for a good tomato soup because I had to give up on Campbell's years ago since it has (or did at the time) high fructose corn syrup, which I try to avoid. I poured this into a mug and heated it up because I don't really do the cold soup thing, and it's pretty good though it has 31% of your daily sodium intake so I'd consume it sparingly.
Mighty Peanut Puffs (0.7 oz) - Buy 15 for $16.50 (found here for $14)
This is a repeat item. They smell amazing when you open the package. However, they have a texture sort of like cornstarch peanuts. If you like that texture, you should definitely try these, but it's really not something I would order because I personally prefer a much higher ratio of fiber to starch in terms of both nutrition and texture.
Bobo's Oat Bites (1.3 oz) - Buy a 30-bite variety pack for $26.94
This is a seasonal pumpkin spice flavor that I can't find on the Bobo's website (though they have it in a larger bar size, I've linked to a variety pack of the smaller oat bites). You see these things a lot in Love with Food; however, each time is usually a different flavor and I enjoy them, so I will not complain about repetition here. These are made with gluten-free oats if that is of interest to you. They are not too hard to cut through, either (I shared this one with my husband).
Kuju Coffee Basecamp Blend (0.5 oz) - Buy a 10-pack for $22
I strongly dislike coffee, but my husband drinks it. Once he verified that this isn't excessively caffeinated (I'd call the level normal), he was willing to try it. It seems this is meant for camping or other times when you'd like a single serving of coffee but don't have access to a French press or coffee maker or something. He thought it was decent coffee although it's not really economical to buy if you're not camping (he works from home and isn't an outdoorsy-type). It is an ethically sourced product, which is nice.
Royal Hawaiian Orchards Sea Salt Macadamias (1 oz) - Buy 4 oz for $7.99
I really like macadamia nuts and just hadn't had them for a long time, so this was nice to see. I'd consider ordering more because we do eat a lot of mixed nuts but this would be good for variety. These were good quality and even though I complain about "sea salt" flavors a lot as being plain, here it just allowed the flavor of the macadamias to shine through. (FYI, please don't give these to pets. They are highly toxic to dogs.)
Harvest Snaps Lightly Salted (0.75 oz) - Buy 3, 3.3 oz bags for $10.80
These are the same as the Snapea Crisps that used to be in food subscription boxes all the time. It seems they've just done a little rebranding. (Online retailers are taking a little while to catch up with the new name.) These have a satisfying texture (a little more fibrous and less starchy than the previous puff snacks). I have bought and eaten full bags of them in the past, and some of the flavored ones are good, too.
Mr. Nature Cranberry Trail Mix (1 oz) - Buy 10 bags for $11 (found here for $10)
This does actually have a little dried fruit in it, it just wasn't obvious when I took the photo of the mix. It is nuts, seeds, and dried cranberries, so if you like those things (we do) you will probably enjoy this. That being said, there wasn't anything specific to recommend this particular brand to me versus any of the many available competing brands.
The New Primal Cilantro Lime Turkey Stick (1 oz) - Buy 12 for $21 (found here for $19)
Lately, there have been meat sticks in this box (often - at least once a month). I am a vegetarian and my husband is not fond of meat sticks, so I gave this to my dad, who was visiting, and he enjoyed it on his airplane ride home. He is not a picky eater and cilantro doesn't bother him, so he didn't mention anything about that particular flavor (which I know will be a deal-breaker for some people).
Zee Zee's Strawberry Grahamz (1 oz) - Buy 12 bags for $15.60 (found here for $13.50)
There's usually something meant to appeal to kids in Love with Food and this month it was strawberry graham crackers. These are colored with beet juice rather than food dye and they do have some whole grain, though they are not completely whole grain. When I opened the bag, the smell was very appealing to me, if a bit strong. If you could get ahold of a whole lot of these, they would make a good cheesecake crust.
Kind Simple Crunch Dark Chocolate and Oats (1.4 oz) - Buy 20 bars for $12.21
If you like the hard kind of granola bars, these are for you. (I am more of a fan of the soft/chewy ones.) They taste about like you'd expect for a Kind product (my old job used to have a ton of free Kind products so I got to try a lot of them) and are as messy as your typical hard granola bar (i.e., they crumble and fall apart at the slightest touch).
Daelmans Caramel Stroopwafel (1.38 0z) - Buy an 8.11 oz tin for $11.46
These show up fairly often in this box but they are delicious. I'm pretty much never going to complain about a stroopwafel. They are sweet and not too messy and probably terrible for you because of sugar, but it isn't going to hurt anything to eat one every now and then as an indulgence.
The Cultured Snacking Co. Probiotic Peanut Blend (1.6 oz)
I could not find this product for sale online. I guess it is new. (Lately, Love with Food has been including some new-to-market items.) You are supposed to knead the little pouch, and I did, and then when I tried to get the product out, it dumped liquid on me anyway, and I couldn't get most of the peanut butter product out. I think this package is really just too small to have a screw-on top. It smelled and tasted like peanut butter but the sample container pretty much ruined it for me.
180 Snacks Almond Rice Pops with Blueberries (0.5 oz) - Buy 12 bags for $13.59 (found here for $11)
These show up fairly often in Love with Food. They are super low in calories because they're mostly made up of popped rice (but they're sweet). I like them because you can sort of feel like you're eating more by looking at the size and the amount of time it takes to chew them up (even though they're mostly air inside). The fruity flavor is definitely noticeable as well.
Off the Eaten Path Veggie Puffs Sour Cream and Onion (1.125 oz) - Buy 16 bags for $19.98
This was a new item for me as well as a new brand. These, like the peanut ones, are pretty starchy, but they do have some fiber as well (from chickpeas). And they are delicious. But I am biased because I am a longtime fan of sour cream and onion potato chips and hadn't had them for a while before eating these!
Chimes Ginger Chews with Meyer Lemon (1.5 oz) - Buy 12 Bags for $23.39
There are a lot of brands of ginger chews, and a lot more from this brand with various flavors. I don't know if I'd be able to tell a Meyer lemon flavor from regular lemon flavor (though I would be able to tell Meyer lemons from regular lemons if I looked at them) but this did blend well with the ginger. Just watch out for any dental work - these are super sticky.
Verdict: There were 17 items in the October 2019 Love With Food Deluxe Box. Although there were a few repeats and a few brands that I already knew about, there were plenty of new items as well. The sour cream and onion puffs, as well as the macadamias, were probably tops for me. (Well, the Fast Bar also tasted really good but I don't believe the scientific claims there.)
