Modern Skyn Apothecary Bath & Body Ritual Box September 2019 Review
I actually discovered this subscription by receiving some of Modern Skyn's products in RosePost Box. When I looked them up for writing that review, I found they had a subscription box. I signed up just to see what it was like and I was really happy with the first box so I asked if I could review the subscription here. I think this subscription does several things right that some competing boxes need to work on a little; we will get to those at various points in this review.
The box came with an information sheet that lists the items, some use suggestions, prices you can actually buy the items for in their shop, and a coupon code that's good through the end of next month to purchase more of the box items you really like.
Autumn Orange + Marigold Bar - Retail Value $12
I'm not sure of the exact weight of this soap bar, but it's a little larger, size-wise, than a typical 5 oz bar of handmade soap. I'd put it at 7 or maybe 7.5 oz (that's just an estimate, though). At any rate, definitely full size (or better). This is a limited-edition scent for autumn and it is free of sulfates, so it doesn't lather a ton, but it does do a great job of making me feel clean without drying out my skin. The scent comes from orange essential oil and is mild and hasn't irritated my skin in the least. The color is natural, which is why it's a bit muted, and I think the marigold flower is a nice touch.
I mentioned there are several things this subscription gets right and one of them is sending a full-size bar of soap. As beauty boxes go, soap is one of the less expensive items that could be included, so I definitely appreciate getting a substantial bar instead of a tiny sample.
Total Eye Treatment - Listed Value $30
Some of the items in this subscription are new to the Modern Skyn Alchemy shop, or haven't yet been released, and this appears to be one of them. (Here is a link to a similar eye treatment although this linked one has beeswax, while the one received in the box is vegan.) This has coffee and tea and I like using it in the morning, especially on weekdays when I need a little extra help waking up before going in to the office. This appears a little gritty in the tin but actually melts into the skin quite well. This doesn't seem like a ton of product but a little goes a long way and this will last me for quite awhile.
Another thing I like about this box after receiving it for a couple of months is that there is very little plastic in the packaging. All the products are wrapped in paper and come primarily in glass and/or metal containers and, while there might be a lid or safety seal or something, I am definitely into the overall eco-friendly packaging.
Pear, Pumpkin, and Poppy Scrub - Retail Value $19 (currently on sale for $11.40)
This appears to have leaked just a little bit of oil in transit but the product is still in excellent shape overall and I didn't lose any of the sugar. Scrubs are my absolute favorite bath and body item to receive in subscription boxes and this one smells fantastic. It's a sugar scrub so it doesn't hurt if it rinses into any shaving nicks or such on your skin. It does leave a bit of oil when you rinse off, but an hour or two after my last use and it has all absorbed into my skin.
Hyaluronic Serum - Retail Value $28 (currently on sale for $16.80)
This serum has hyaluronic acid from a vegan source (important to note since a lot of the hyaluronic acid used in industry is a byproduct of poultry processing) and it has a lower average molecular weight to help with absorption. I'm not sure how low you'd have to go in molecular weight to get hyaluronic acid to penetrate your skin, but at any rate this is super moisturizing and a really nice item to receive for fall when the weather starts to get dry. This also has aloe and apple extract, though I don't notice a scent. It doesn't leave my skin tacky or sticky at all, and I was able to put on makeup afterwards without a problem.
Coffee + Agave Body Mud - Listed Value $30
This is another one that is not yet available in their shop. It has a somewhat thin consistency for something called "mud" and I am absolutely amazed that it did not leak AT ALL during shipping. But it didn't. This needs to be left on for some time and I couldn't think of a practical way to do that for most of my body, so I used it on my face (since it was noted to avoid the eye area, I figured the rest of the face was fair game). Although it appears to be thin, you do actually get good coverage and it's still easy to wash off when you're done. I thought this made my skin feel nice and toned and it removed some excess oil without drying me out too much. I do note that a coffee smell remained on my skin for a few hours afterwards.
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $119 for the September 2019 Modern Skyn Apothecary Bath and Body Ritual Box. That meets the promised $100+ value as well as the promised number of full-sized products (5-8). What I can say after having received this last month as well is that item types are not duplicated month-to-month, so I haven't run into a problem of having too much of any one kind of item, but if you are worried about product accumulation there are bi-monthly and quarterly boxes available as well. I also just really love the design on the labels and I thought the flowers inside the box were a nice touch while still being environmentally friendly, and I like that at least some of the items are already available for purchase in their shop. I thought the included scents were seasonally-appropriate and I was happy with pretty much every single item, though I'd say the scrub was probably my favorite.
