Henny+Roo October 2019 Chicken Box Review

So it is really cold and wet here in PA recently, and the girls aren't feeling super social! They are also both actively molting, because they have extremely poor timing. I am hoping this box has some treats to perk them up! Let's see what's inside!

Apparently this sub is branching out into farm-inspired home goods! Cute!

Our box comes complete with an info card explaining all of the items arriving inside this month.

It also has a card with a coupon code to use at Nixall Pro.

Let's see what is inside our box!

Little Red Hen Candy Co. Sea Salt Caramels - Buy a pound for $18.00

I freaking LOVE salty caramels, and I didn't share these with ANYONE. I have no regrets. They were so soft and sweet, with the perfect amount of sea salt. I am going to forbid myself from ordering more, because even if I bought a pound I would probably still selfishly eat them all by myself!

Flock Frenzy Sunflower Delight - Buy 4 lbs for $10.99

The treats and mixes are my favorite part of this subscription, because Satchel and Dizzy love them so much! I always feel kind of bad for the girls in the winter because they tend to hide inside their coop or covered run and we don't even bother trying to get them to free-range. Because they aren't spending their days exploring outside, they really miss out on the yummy bugs and fresh grass of spring and summer. I hope that yummy chicken treats are at least a slightly comparable delight! This is a blend of corn, sunflower seeds, and oats. The girls were way into it!

I couldn't bribe them to leave the run because it was so wet (and their run is covered) but they did approach the wire to be fed this yummy blend!

I left a bunch on the ledge too, so they could snack.

I also left a little bowl inside for midnight snacking!

Little Hen Bracelet - Retail Value $14.95

How cute is this silver-plated hen charm? I love the chubby chicken and the simple chain. It is very adorable worn alone or stacked with other faves.

Encore Poultry Grit Plus, 16 oz - Retail Value $2.49

Grit is one of those items I always forget to buy, but it truly is a necessity for healthy chickens. They eat these little rocks which stay in their gizzards, assisting with their digestion. Chickens are weird! This grit is scented with anise, which makes them especially irresistible! If my girls were still laying, the added calcium would also help them produce strong eggshells. Though this bag isn't large, it should last a long time.

I like to add this directly to their food as well as leave it in little piles around the run so they can nibble and scratch.

Egg Face Mask - Retail Value $3.48 (currently on sale for $2.88)

I mean, this is crazy perfect for this box. A sheet mask filled with egg proteins? Sign me up. I generally really love eggy skincare because my dry skin drinks up the moisture!

VetResponse Wound + Skin Solution, 2 fl oz - Retail Value $11.95

Sprays like this are perfect to keep around for chickens or really any pets! It helps jumpstart the healing process for cuts, scrapes, burns, and any skin irritation. With chickens, who can be rather clumsy, this is a must-have.

Durvet Poultry Probiotics, 3 g - Estimated Value $0.27 (Buy 100 g for $8.99)

Will and I like to use products like this frequently, but especially in the summer! Along with probiotics that help keep my girls' digestive systems running smoothly, they also contain electrolytes, which keep them extra hydrated in the hot weather. We usually add a packet to their waterer and let them do their thing!

Laying Box Liner

Our last item comes in every box and is a super handy laying box liner. This helps keep your eggs clean after the hens leave them in the elevated boxes they use to lay. Since our girls seem to have finally stopped laying, we will just use it to add to the coziness of the nesting boxes because they do like to sleep in them.

The Verdict: Who would have thought there could be a chicken-care + self-care box that totally worked? Somehow, Henny+Roo accomplishes this mix of practical and whimsical very, very well! This is my second box and I am delighted. I really appreciate practical additions like wound sprays and grit, because I often forget to replenish supplies like this since we don't need them all the time. The hens would probably vote on that seed mix being their top pick this month, and I would agree with them. We all enjoyed ourselves! I am tickled by the sheet mask and caramels because I feel like I also got treated this month. Hopefully I can coax them to be more social next month because I can't wait to see what November has in store.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box will be the welcome box or the December box. Per Henny+Roo:

Orders placed the 1st - 10th of the month start with a Welcome Box, renew on the 15th, then continue the following month, shipping on or about the 5th of the month. Orders placed the 11th - 31st start with next month's box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $39.95, meaning each of the 7 items inside has an average cost of $5.71.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Oh wow! There really is a subscription box for everything! 😂 I’m actually really excited about this. My sister in law is a huge chicken enthusiast and I’m looking for holiday gifts for her. This might be perfect!

Ahhh!! Why do they all have such bad timing this year? Mine are bordering on pathetic. I do love the chicken sweater idea though…

Hi Megan!
Thank you for the 2nd instalment of The Adventures of Satchel and Dizzy! Hope the girls don’t feel too cooped up over winter. All chicken days are better when there is some light, warmth and lots of bugs. Thank you for the great review again (yours, and the squawky votes from the girls). I just love this box, and your reviews, too.

Thanks so much 🙂 They certainly prefer the non-winter months, but at least it is an excuse to treat them! We had a few warmer (relatively speaking) days this past week so Will let them run around out in the yard. He also put a tarp on top of their run so block some wind and snow. Hopefully next month I can get some snow chicken pictures!
