Universal Yums “Poland” January 2020 Review
Universal Yums is a blast! I love how this is such a hands-on experience for my family. Not only do we get to eat new and fun treats, but we also get to learn about a new country. We adore this box and look forward to it arriving each and every month!
Side note: Because I have adapted to a low-carb lifestyle, my husband and 2 sons tasted all of these treats and shared their opinions with me for review purposes.
Upon opening the box, you are greeted with a fun, animated sheet that welcomes us to the wonderful country of Poland! On the backside, they include "The Official Yum Awards." This ballot is where you can cast your vote for your favorite and not so favorite snacks in the box. If you post your ballot on social media, you could win more of your favorite snacks!
Next, we have a detailed pamphlet that is packed with information about this month's snacks, trivia, a matching game, a recipe, and a clue to next month's box!
Monster Munch Original
How cute are these little ghost-shaped chips?! My kids were OBSESSED with these! I did have a tiny nibble and found them to be extremely airy and crunchy with the perfect hint of saltiness. Hank compared these to a fluffier version of a Lay's original potato chip, but loved the ghost shape so much he had to take a baggie full of them to school to show his classmates!
Tago Delice Meringues
I always get excited for the large boxes they sometimes send in this subscription, and this was one of those. In this pretty box, we found 10 disk-shaped meringue cookies with creamy nut filling and a dark chocolate drizzle. They were very pretty, but also a bit "dusty" from travel. My husband described these as being crispy, light, and nutty, with the perfect hint of chocolate. My kids both loved these and gave them two thumbs up!
E. Wedel Ptasie Mleczko - Buy a 13.4 oz package for $10.99
Funny story about this treat: my 4-year-old thought it looked gross and wasn't going to try it. I read him the description of "dark chocolate covered vanilla marshmallow" and I honestly haven't seen him run so fast to nab a snack up in my life! He excitedly declared this was the best treat in the whole box! Hank and my husband thought the outer layer of chocolate was the perfect ratio and really enjoyed the soft marshmallow inside. I will definitely have to buy a package for Charlie's birthday!
Dr. Gerard Apricot Mini Cake
I have to say, I think this is the prettiest snack we received this month. This glazed sponge cake with cream filling and apricot jam looks like a million bucks! Usually, we aren't fans of sponge cake in packages, but the sponge cake layered with the cream filling and apricot jam glazed in chocolate just made the best combination. Not only did it look amazing, but it tasted amazing too! My boys gobbled this right up and searched the box for more!
Papryka Crunchips Sticks - Buy a 175 g package for $8.00
We've become accustomed to receiving little sticks like these in this subscription, and we're not mad about it! These crunchy little paprika flavored potato sticks are packed with flavor and are extremely addictive. I had to cut the kids off before they were all gone!
Wawel Nut Break
I have to admit, this bar was soooo hard to resist after I heard the oohing and ahhing of my family trying it! This bar is milk chocolate with salted peanut filling. I am a peanut addict, as are my kids, and they had a hard time just eating one square. The chocolate was not only creamy and smooth, but the peanut filling added the perfect amount of saltiness to balance the chocolate. Do they make a sugar free version?!
Rarytas Crackers
Because I am a cracker addict, I just had to take a tiny sliver of a bite. To my surprise, I couldn't identify the flavor of the little black specks. I then come to find out, it is black cumin seeds. These seeds look like pepper, smell like fennel, and taste like nutmeg! No wonder I couldn't identify it! They were delicious, and it was hard to stop at that small nibble, but my kids dove right in and sampled quite a few with smiles on their faces!
Piernickzki Basniowe
Hooray for another big package! These chocolate covered gingerbread cookies with apple filling sounded and looked very appetizing, but each of my kids took one bite and went straight to the garbage can to spit it out. That is never a good sign! Because when someone tells you it's so bad you have to taste it, my husband felt obligated to give it a fair chance, and he too hit the garbage can. What a disappointment! I was told these were wayyy too strong and spicy tasting. While it's beautiful, I will be bringing these to work to share with people who may have a more sophisticated palate than us!
Wawel Milkizz
We love chocolate and were so excited to come across yet another chocolate bar. This time it was a milk chocolate bar with sweetened condensed milk filling. This bar contained 6 separate segments, which equaled out to 2 per person, and my kids decided that was not enough. They found the chocolate and condensed milk filling a perfect combination and even asked dad for his share!
Beskidzkie Paluscki
Now, this is an interesting combo: pretzel sticks with poppy seeds? I love me a poppy seed muffin, or poppy seed bagel, but have never thought of adding them to pretzels! My family had conflicting feelings about this Yum. My husband and oldest son thought it was awful, but my picky 4-year-old loved them. They were quite messy with the loose poppy seeds, which may be added to the appeal for my son, but he packed some for school, saying they were crunchy and tasty!
Czekoladowa Mieszankia Imieninowa
In the most recent Universal Yums boxes, the "Yum Bag" filled with little candies has been excluded. After mass backlash, they brought back the white bag filled with little goodies, and this is what we received: 2 chocolate candies filled with strawberry filling and two chocolate candies filled with blackcurrant filling. Because my kids are outdoorsmen, they likened the looks of these treats to deer scat but were eager to give them a shot. After one bite, they both looked defeated. It was not a candy they enjoyed, and they very kindly saved the rest for dad to try. He thought they were chewy and chocolatey, but not his absolute favorite.
Krowka Wypasiona Mleczna
The last treat in this month's box were four of these little packages of cream fudge. As I read the description, my sons were thrilled to hear this is Poland's most beloved candy. They couldn't wait to give it a try. Turns out, they thought the cream, butter, and sugar mixture was too grainy and too sweet. I had my husband try it and he felt it was more like caramel than fudge, but enjoyed the flavor. I swear I saw him even sneak a couple in his lunch pail, so they had to have been pretty good!
The Verdict: We really love Universal Yums, and this month was a hit! Every month we are impressed with the curation and the time they spend perfecting this box. It is not only a snack box but an entire experience for my family. My kids couldn't wait to open this box, and my husband found a lot of treats he really enjoyed. While we didn't love every single item in this box, it was one of our favorites and it is always fun to try new and different things! I love how it teaches my kids to be open and excited about different cultures and countries! We can't wait to see where the February box will come from. Our next destination hint is this: "'Je t'aime!' the man said, and the woman looked up. But what she saw was him gazing at his empty soup cup. Where we're headed next, the Yums steal hearts away- Salty caramels, rich truffles, and cheesy souffle!" Where could it be from?!
