Meal kits & grocery deliveries - how soon can you get these popular subscription boxes?

Many MSA readers have let us know that they may be trying out a meal kit or grocery subscription for the first time this week as a way to get fresh produce and food delivered without having to leave their homes. We wanted to keep a list of all subscriptions in one place as a reference. We'll be updating this list daily with delivery windows so that you can plan meals for the next few weeks accordingly.

Below are all Meal Kit Delivery & Grocery Subscriptions that are still accepting new subscribers. I've included the soonest delivery date for my zip code (Pittsburgh, PA), so your soonest delivery date may vary slightly. I will keep this list updated on a daily basis so you can use it to plan out your grocery/meal needs for the next few weeks.

Last Updated: May 5th, 2020.

Delivery Schedule

As of May 5th, if you sign up for any of these boxes, you can expect to receive your first box the following week (typically within 7-10 days). All of the boxes on this list clearly message your delivery date in the checkout process, so you can confirm when you'll receive your first box before you pay for anything.

This list contains both meal kits (typically weekly deliveries of packaged ingredients to complete 2-5 recipes of your choice) as well as online grocery services (which range from meat boxes to membership sites that include a variety of pantry foods and other household goods).

There used to be a subscription for a big box of pantry foods. I can’t remember the name but I think it was $20 and always had non perishable food, new brands or products. I am trying to find something along those lines. I can’t afford these prices and many of them do not ship to where I live anyway.

We are putting up chicken coops and getting vegetables in the ground around here. Our state is one of the 9 that refuses to shelter in place so who knows how buck wild it’s going to get in Oklahoma once they realize how far the virus has spread. Better to be prepared than not have anything in our pantries and freezers.

Ah, I think you’re thinking of Degustabox? Sadly it’s gone now (at least in the US).

Darlene

You do realize that grocery stores are open during this right?! Even the shelter in place states are allowing grocery stores to stay open so please don’t panic buy and hoard.

I just got my first Gobble order and I dont know if they have changed since the reviews or if I got the wrong meals but the food for the price is outrageous. The chicken with polenta meal for 2 had only one chicken breast to half. The chicken pot pie with biscuits was a small thigh about 2 inches wide each with 1 biscuit a person. I have tried Home Chef, Green Apron, etc. and always found enough food for two. very disappointed.

Liz

FYI-EveryPlate currently has a delivery delay (at least in Chicago area). Our Thursday box came Saturday.

Donna

I just received my Green Chef Box. I tried 7 meal kits (each for about one month) before deciding on which one to get on a regular basis and Green Chef won out…hands down. The other kits were all pretty good but Green Chef was by far the best. A huge bonus is that they have the best customer service ever.
I don’t know why Green Chef isn’t listed in this article but I do know that MSA has reviewed Green Chef in the past in case someone wants to read it.

Heather

The Blue Apron link says $60 off three deliveries, not $80 off of four.

Reply ButtonReply

Chantel

FYI, Blue Apron has about half their meals listed as out of stock for the next month or so. Definitely take that into consideration before purchasing, as I did not know that, and they have no options I like. I was able to skip those few weeks, but it seems the good meals sell out quickly.

Thanks for the heads up – we’ll try to check meal availability when we update this page too.

Can you tell us more about Misfits? I got one of the other similair ones and I wasn’t sold. It was pricey and some produce went bad before I could use.

I subscribe to Marley Spoon and also received an Email, this is what they said:

My name is Fabian Siegel, and I am the CEO & Founder of Martha & Marley Spoon. I wanted to reach out to you personally regarding the outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus and reassure you that the safety of our customers, our team and our community is, and always has been, a top priority. We are closely monitoring the news as it develops and are dedicated to upholding our strict safety standards that ensure the health and well being of our Martha & Marley Spoon community.

We understand—now more than ever—how important it is that your meals are delivered safely and reliably every week, which is why I’d like to share with you what we’re doing to make sure that continues to happen.

Food and Employee Safety – We have Food Safety and Quality Assurance experts on site at our facilities and are reinforcing our stringent sanitation and hygiene procedures. As part of these procedures, we adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (the legal protocols food manufacturers and sellers must comply with to be certified by food regulators) and have sealed non-essential entrances and exits at our facilities. We are tracking the situation as it evolves and will continue to follow best practices put forth by global and local health authorities.

Delivery Direct to Your Door – Receiving your fresh groceries at home is as much about staying healthy as it is about saving time. All the ingredients you receive from us come from a controlled environment in our fulfillment centers. We are working closely with our partner carriers to ensure these ingredients move from packing to shipping quickly and arrive safe, sealed, and delivered direct to your door.

Uninterrupted Service – While we can’t predict what will happen in the coming weeks, we can make plans that safeguard against service disruptions. We are stocking our shelves with products and ingredients from vetted and approved suppliers, and we are taking steps to provide appropriate ingredient substitutions if and when necessary. This will enable us to reliably deliver your meals so that you are free to focus on what matters most: the health and safety of your loved ones.

Like you, I cook Martha & Marley Spoon meals weekly with my family, and sharing healthy, high quality ingredients with the Martha & Marley Spoon community is a privilege and a responsibility I take seriously. Because of this, the health, quality and safety of our products, employees and community is—and will continue to be—our top priority.

Thank you for your loyalty and your trust in us.

Okay, just got an e-mail from Gobble:

Gobble is actively monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak towards ensuring the safety and integrity of our food deliveries and protecting our customers, employees, and families.

As an essential national food service, Gobble does not anticipate any business closure or supply chain disruption. We are working closely with our carrier partners to ensure your deliveries remain reliable and consistent. We will let you know right away if anything changes.

We always handle all ingredients in alignment with the highest possible standards for health and safety. Here are our existing and new policies, now in place at Gobble locations nationwide, in line with recommendations from the FDA, CDC, WHO, and local authorities:

Food Quality & Safety:

Gobble facilities are FDA-certified, which includes scheduled cleaning and sanitization of the warehouse, equipment, and food preparation stations multiple times per day.
We have reinforced our existing food safety training, including effective handwashing, equipment and warehouse sanitation, correct use of personal protective gear, and proper food handling. Gobble teams use gloves 100% of the time while handling or cooking any Gobble products. In addition, we have a new COVID-19 response team reviewing and further enhancing safety precautions for our team members and our facilities daily.
Any Gobble Employees who may feel sick are asked to stay home with paid sick leave. This policy has been strictly reinforced. There have been no reported cases of COVID-19 in our offices or warehouses and no reported contact with any COVID-19 cases to date.
We have limited all non-essential and visitor access to our warehouses. We are prohibiting entry into food preparation areas by non-trained Gobble personnel. We have also moved all employees who can work from home to be fully remote to further safety and social distancing.

Delivery Assurances:

As always, Gobble is committed to providing you with the safest possible food delivery service. From the start, we designed our delivery boxes to be safe and tamper proof. The foiler liner inside your box is considered a food-grade surface. It arrives sealed to protect your dinner kits and ingredients inside from any environmental exposure. When your Gobble box arrives on your doorstep, you can be sure the contents are safe, fresh, and direct from our FDA-certified food facilities.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), delivered packages are safe to handle, even when coming from or going to locations with confirmed COVID-19 cases.
The CDC can confirm that, “There is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food.” All of our fresh ingredients are handled in contained and safe environments and then washed and cooked in the safety in your home.

On behalf of everyone at Gobble, our hearts go out to you during this uncertain and challenging time. Now more than ever, people are relying on Gobble to deliver reliable, easy, and fresh meals to their home, as they participate in social distancing and shelter in place. We will continue to take every precaution to ensure our customers, employees, and partners stay safe and healthy, and can continue to enjoy our meals at home without worry.

Thank you for your trust in Gobble,

Have any of these companies put out a statement regarding how they’re handling food safety in light of the coronavirus pandemic? I checked social media for a few and haven’t seen anything. Even if it’s just the usual “We’re doing what the WHO and CDC recommend” that would be more reassuring than not saying anything about it.

SquirrelyGirl

To our Daily Harvest community,

We thought long and hard about sending this email, because we know you have enough to think about right now. In light of the grocery-store-lines-around-the-block in our hometown of New York City, and around the country, we wanted to share our plan for continuing to deliver your Daily Harvest. We, first and foremost, are thinking about you. We have doubled up on our inventory so you can have what you need in your freezer during this unprecedented time of uncertainty. While there may be disruptions we cannot control down the line, we are confident we are working through as many scenarios as we can imagine to ensure that you’ll get your nourishing food when you need it most.

And, because we are sure you have this question in the back of your head, here is a little more on our food safety practices: Daily Harvest has always had strict procedures in our production kitchens, which include strict health and hygiene programs. The World Health Organization, Food and Drug Administration, and Centers for Disease Control have confirmed that there is no known risk to food safety in any ingredient supply chain and that applies to us, too.

We are in this with you and will do everything in our power to help you stay well nourished.

Wishing you and your family safety and health.

I believe all if not most of these companies have sent out emails to their current subscribers about what they are doing to ensure clean and safe working environments for both their employees and their customers. If you’d like me to do a round up of these emails and post for reference, please let me know.

Aly

Yes please! I haven’t received anything from Gobble or DailyHarvest and would love to get statements from them.

We subscribe to Hello Fresh and we received an email this week about their safety at this time.

I’ve been getting Hello Fresh and Home Chef for quite awhile now. I think I received emails from both companies regarding the extra precautions they’re taking due to the Covid pandemic. I could be mistaken about receiving one from Hello Fresh (I’ve been getting so very many from everywhere recently), but this is what Home Chef sent (they provided contact info at the end of the email, which I have omitted):

“With the growing concerns around the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), I want to assure you of Home Chef’s commitment to delivering top-quality ingredients to your door safely.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there is no evidence to support the spread of COVID-19 through food or food packaging.

We are thankful that you invite us into your homes and take seriously our responsibility to your families. Here is how we are ensuring your food arrives safely and on time:

Food and Employee Safety: Home Chef facilities have rigorous employee safety and food quality assurance programs in place. We are committed to Good Manufacturing Practices, which include regular and frequent sanitization of equipment and require employees to wash hands regularly and wear gloves. We have increased sanitation frequency and are encouraging employees to use CDC best practices in and outside of work.

No Contact Deliveries: We are working closely with our national carrier partners to ensure delivery continuity. As always, our deliveries do not require our customers to have any contact with the delivery person.

We know that bringing your family together around the dinner table is more important than ever in these times of uncertainty. We will continue to take every measure to ensure that our ingredients reach our customers safely.

If you have any additional questions, our Customer Service team would be happy to assist you.

Sincerely,
Pat Vihtelic
Founder and CEO”

Both companies send meat in plastic and the ingredients in bags- HC in plastic and HF in a paper bag (‘sealed’ with a sticker type thing). You can leave the paper bag to quarantine in the fridge for a few days before opening it, and the plastic bag(s) can be wiped down with Clorox wipes/ Lysol.

Probably no more risky than purchasing at the grocery store, even with home delivery.

I really love Home Chef. I have tried every plate, and while it was good, it was extremely simple and a little bit too boring for me. Although the price is almost unbeatable.

But home chef is just perfect, I really love the options and loved how they packed each meal individually. I would highly suggest it. I got a great deal and also found a 25% coupon so I paid around $3 a meal!
