Henny+Roo March 2020 Chicken Box Review
Look at that GREEN grass! The girls are so excited.
What's more exciting than green grass? Green grass sprinkled with chicken treats. More on that later!
Our box comes complete with an info card explaining all of the items arriving this month.
Chicken Ecstacy, 1 lb - Buy 3 lbs. for $8.49
I had to laugh at the name of this stuff. But truly it did make my girls act crazy! They loved it! Inside is a blend of cracked corn, kelp, barley, dried mealworms, flax seed, wheat, marigold flowers, and more and the girls are hardcore fans of this one. This is a pretty decently sized bag, but to extend the delight longer I mixed it with a larger bag of cracked corn.
I tossed some of the mix onto an old screen we have in the backyard. I went on a short walk with Tucker and by the time we returned the girls had basically picked the new stuff out from the cracked corn, like a child eating only the marshmallows from a bowl of Lucky Charms.
I was impressed by how thorough they were. Also a little annoyed.
Still searching for the tasty worms hidden among the corn.
Satchel seemed quite pleased with herself. As usual. At least I can count on the random deer who sleep in our yard to eat the corn.
Calendula Flowers, 12 g - Retail Value $2.79
The mix above also had calendula flowers, but the girls seemed less enthused about eating the flowers solo. It still made for a really pretty picture!!
"What exactly do we do with these"?
Honestly, Charlie seemed more interested and probably would have eaten them, but I put a stop to that.
Not even a peck when I scattered the flowers on the ground. Oh well.
Coop Recuperate, 1.25 lbs
I think this is my favorite inclusion of the month. This is a coop additive with eucalyptus and lemongrass essential oils (organic!) along with diatomaceous earth. I sprinkled this inside the coop to help prevent pests (the diatomaceous earth literally shreds mites!) and give the coop a fresh smell. Apparently this stuff also helps your compost pile too! I linked to the home site for this product, which then directs to Amazon, but I couldn't quite locate a value anywhere.
Pretty much effortless to add this to the coop bedding. Poured some in and the girls will scratch around and do the rest!
Life on the Farm Tote - Retail Value $8.95
This tote is super cute. I actually have amassed quite the collection of chicken treats from this sub and I decided to store them in this bag that I hung next to the door to our backyard. It makes hauling the treats to and from the coop a snap.
Chick Luggage Tag - Retail Value $3.95
Though I don't see myself traveling anytime soon (wahhh!) this will be the perfect little tag to make sure I can spot my luggage quickly. I would be shocked if anyone else had one of these on their basic block suitcase. A+ cuteness factor.
Gro2Max Probiotic Supplement - Retail Value $6.95
Our ladies are getting older, though Satchel still does gift us the occasional egg. This powder is a supplement to make sure all of their digestive functions are in tip-top shape! It also helps them absorb more nutrients and helps those rare egg gifts have stronger shells.
Brooder Thermometer
This is a great little tool to hang inside the coop during those times where the weather is gorgeous one day then there is a freak freeze the next. It will help me keep track of the coop's warmth and help me know when it is time to turn back on the heat lamp for the night.
Laying Box Liner
Our last item comes in every box and is a super handy laying box liner. This helps keep your eggs clean after the hens leave them in the elevated boxes they use to lay. Since Satchel has decided she isn't done quite yet, these are really nice for her to lay eggs on.
I love springtime and the girls do too. I scattered some yummy surprises all over the yard.
Dizzy's neck is purple not because of a chicken-related fashion statement, but because she had some sort of cut there. We aren't sure what it was from, and of course, she is fine, but we used a blue colored spray to protect it and dye it since chickens are really attracted to red and it might attract some unwanted attention from Satchel.
See you next time!
The Verdict: Henny+Roo is always a fun unboxing for both myself and the girls. Spring has officially sprung, so Dizzy and Satchel are out of the coop and run much more often, enjoying the green grass and sprouting blooms. This box had some very beloved treats for both the girls and myself, and also a pretty awesome coop refresher for springtime cleaning!
