We're super excited to share this post with you! It's the first part of our new series where we invite you, the MSA community to review subscriptions with us. (If you missed the original post, you can still sign up for MSA Insiders here, and you'll be considered for any future review assignments.)

We partnered with IPSY to send some MSA Insiders the May IPSY Glam Bag. We asked them to try all the products and let us know what their favorite item was. Here's what everyone received:

And here are their favorite products:

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara in Black

I've always been a ride or die Better Than Sex gal, but trying Roller Lash has changed my whole life. I usually use a lash primer, but saw no benefit to it- the Roller Lash looked better without! It was tough to get off, but a little make up remover loosened it up.

Lela S.

I tried the Benefit Rollerlash mascara. I really loved how this product gave my lashes curl with application. Totally eliminated the step of curling my eyelashes which has always been a bit intimidating to me! There was some clumping, but it was easily resolved by running a clean spoolie through my lashes as they were drying. The product and the curl lasted all day and removed easily with makeup remover.

Roller Lash Mascara. I’m typically intimidated by roller mascara wands. However, Benefit’s Roller lash mascara was not intimidating to use! It went on smoothly, did not smudge or leave any clumps. For someone with light and bland eyelashes, this mascara truly brightened my eyes! Will definitely purchase.

Even though there were a lot of hits for me in the May Ipsy Glam Bag, there was one clear winner: Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash mascara in the color black. I have heard of this mascara in the past but never purchased or sampled the product before. I was skeptical at first due that it would live up to its claims of curling the lashes because its wand seems to only be slightly more curved than the average mascara wand. But W-O-W this mascara made my short & straight lashes actually look curled! The formula wore well throughout the day without any major clumping or crumbling (some mascaras ball up on me throughout the day but not this one)!

Makayla E.

I loved all five of the products I received in the May 2020 Ipsy Glam Bag but the Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara was definitely my favorite. I thought I had already found my Holy Grail mascara but Roller Lash blew that mascara out of the water. Roller Lash comes with the best mascara wand I have ever used. It is thin with a slight curve that makes mascara application simple and quick. The mascara itself is the perfect shade of black and goes well with countless different makeup looks from smokey to bold to natural. I was impressed with how much volume this product added to my lashes and how it curled them just the right amount. This mascara doesn't get clumpy or cause the dreaded spider leg effect to your lashes. I love that it doesn't smear or smudge at all. You can wear this mascara all day and it still holds the curl and volume without needing to be touched up or reapplied. I am so grateful that I have found another Holy Grail status beauty product through Ipsy.

When it comes to mascara, I prefer a product that does it all: makes my lashes look long and sweeping, stays put, and simple to remove. Roller Lash Super-Curling and Lifting Mascara by Benefit Cosmetics, featured in this month’s IPSY Glam Bag does all of this, using a special brush to lift and lengthen eyelashes. I tested it for wear length several times and I’m happy to say my eyelashes still looked great at the end of the day. I was pleasantly surprised at how effortlessly this mascara swept on without clumping and found it also curled the lashes nicely, saving me a bit of time with no need for an eyelash curler! I could feel the brush lifting my lashes as I applied it and could see the difference in how long my lashes looked post-application. Removing it was easy with my standard routine - unlike some formulations, I didn’t find myself having to do extra steps. Since I have a fairly sensitive eye area, gentle removal was a definite plus.

First Aid Beauty FAB Pharma Arnica Relief & Rescue Mask

My favorite sample I received from May's Ipsy was the Arnica Relief & Rescue Mask from First Aid Beauty. This mask is meant to be applied to the skin and allowed to absorb. However, as someone with acne-prone combination skin, I get hesitant about products like this. Instead, I wore it for 10-15 minutes then wiped it off. My skin felt hydrated without feeling oily afterwards. I've now tried this mask twice and am pleased with the way my skin looks when I wake up the next day as it lessens the redness around any recovering spots. This is the third product I've tried from First Aid Beauty and they all seem to agree well with my skin. Additionally, the sample size is great! I'd estimate you could get about 4-5 uses from the tube.

Savi B.

First aid beauty mask was my favorite product from this set. I underestimated this item because of the smell. The mask blew me away with the results. My face needs this treatment. My face was soft and hydrated. The de stress was the best part. I would buy this mask in a full size.

Latrail S.

Fab Pharma Arnica Relief & Rescue Mask. This is the product sample I was most concerned about. I do have sensitive skin, and my face reacts by turning really red when it’s unhappy with a product. I tested on the back of my hand first to see what would happen and I may have found a new miracle relief mask! There is a slight scent to this, but it is barely detectable. The directions say to apply, allow to absorb, then tissue off any excess. It felt so wonderfully cooling on my skin, absorbed quickly and I can feel the relief in my skin between the hand with the product and the hand without – which it won’t be without for much longer!

ESTATE Cosmetics Dew Me Baked Highlighter in BYEEE

My favorite product was the Estate Dew Me baked highlight powder in BYEEE, a pale yellow gold with heavy shimmer. I have A LOT of highlighters thanks to Ipsy, but Estate Dew Me is one of my favorites. The hard baked surface allows me to pick up just the right amount of product with a big fluffy brush for my cheeks or a firm shadow brush to highlight my brow bone. It applies evenly without too much fall out, a problem I've experienced with loosely packed highlighters.

Goldfaden MD Wake Up Call Overnight Regenerative Facial Treatment

I fell in love with the Goldfaden MD wake up call overnight regenerative facial treatment. I’m a skincare junkie and love to try new things, so I don’t often repurchase items, this is one of those items that I will repurchase. It’s a lovely consistency, sinks in super fast and leave’s my skin feeling really smooth. The texture is lovely and melts right into the skin. I woke up with my skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Perfect for a fall and winter moisturizer when the skin needs an extra boost of hydration.

This was fun! Loved reading everyones review and seeing faces to go with them. Not a fan of Roller Lash though.

I like this idea, I’d prefer to hear any downsides to readers opinions as well. I don’t like roller lash at all and I noticed it didn’t make any of the users lashes look thick or long, it seems good for those who like a natural or even no makeup look.

Great to see reader reviews (as I was one if the ones hollering for it loudest) BUT – it would be really really nice to see what the ladies got in their OWN bags, not a handpicked bag of all same products chosen by Ipsy. Half of the fun is seeing what other folks got in their Glambags. Also agree with others that some communication letting the Insiders know that their feedback was received and appreciated would be nice. And maybe a list for all Insiders to see where they fall in determining who is next to get a free Glambag and review it. People appreciate knowing they are included and if they can see their name moving up over time in a list for this joy/honor, it will give much needed hope right now.

Thanks to the lovely ladies who reviewed this bag! I like this idea, Liz. Now I’m off to search thru my stash to see if I have a sample of that mascara somewhere!

Great job, everyone! So fun to see!

I love the idea but no one loves everything. This is just another ipsy advertisement. No one had anything negative to say? These are cherry picked reviews.

Tiffany Schmidt

They asked us to review our favorite product in the bag. That’s why there arent any negative reviews. I’m sure if we had reviewed the entire bag there would have been some negative opinions. I dont understand all the negativity about this. Doing this was so much fun and I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but I just don’t understand why people are trying to rain on our parade so to speak. That’s just my opinion

Reply ButtonReply

Elane

“Rain on your parade” that’s rich. I am happy you got a free glam bag but I want real opinions from real readers. This doesn’t feel like an advertisement to you? A free one at that? Pick your favorite item and give it a glowing review. Why? I understand they’re trying to get the reader involved but I want real people reviewing a real bag. That’s what I thought this was going to be. Instead it’s just another sales pitch.

dia

Tiffany, please don’t take these comments to heart and feel like you need to defend the post. It’s a good post, and the majority of the readers seem to appreciate it. There is always going to be some negativity, especially with the anonymity that comes with the internet.

Irving

Rain on your parade? Why?
I hope differences of opinion are always included here, and that includes all opinions, not just positive. And not liking something isn’t “negative” – it’s honesty, and super important for buyers to make up their own minds.

Tara W

I have noticed a huge uptick of negativity online. Not just here, but almost anywhere people are allowed to leave their opinions. I feel as if the Pandemic has made it worse. This was a nice feature and I hope that you ladies focus on the positive comments. Thanks for your opinions and feedback on this Glam Bag!

Anya

I really enjoyed hearing and seeing the voices and faces of the MSA community. Since we no longer have the forum and swaps are on hold, this is a nice, authentic bridge. Hope MSA keeps it up!

This was a good post. My Ipsy bag contains none of these products, though,.

What a great idea for a post. Loved reading this and looking at photos. This is very helpful and informative. I hope I’m chosen for next round!

Hi everyone (all the Insider reviewers and Liz), thank you for this great post! I am sure I’ve tried Roller Lash in the past, but I’m obviously going to have to give it another shot. It was great to see such a diverse group of ladies reviewing, thank you. I really enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts. My only suggestions for improvement would be to a) add a dude’s perspective and b) to know what the least-liked product was too. Because I am slightly naughty like that.

Redwoods301

These are really useful critiques, I’d add no filters in photos, there’s no reason to in skincare review pics, and it detracts from cosmetic reviews if the audience can’t tell what the product actually looks like and how it performs on real skin.

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

Some people might not realize that the front-facing camera (the one you use when you take a selfie) of a phone will often have a filter as a default setting.

Irving

Agree. Why would someone even think a filter is honest when discussing beauty PRODUCTS?

Laura

I agree about the filters.

Tiffany Schmidt

Which photos do you think are using filters? I dont notice any with filters and I know I didnt use one when taking my picture

Carly

It would be great to see a bit more diversity as well! I love MSA but I’ve noticed they’re really lacking that

Fun! Congrats to all the ladies who participated! Looks like there was a clear winner here!

So cool to see what I’ll be getting when my Ipsy arrives and to get an early and honest opinion on the products! Can’t wait to try the masks since lately my skin has been getting a few dry patches!
Thanks!

This was a fun read! Great reviews ladies 🙂 It’s also fun to put a face (or hand 😉 ) to the names on here 🙂

Hi Liz!
I did the insiders survey (and was part of the original insiders). But didn’t get an email about this?
I also emailed you some feedback at your request at the initial MSA Insiders revised post but never received a reply?
So just checking that I didn’t miss something. Thanks!

Reply ButtonReply

Tanya

I also signed up awhile ago and have not heard anything. I know lots of people signed up and not all can be chosen but some communication would’ve been nice.

Reply ButtonReply

Bee

I agree on communication! I actually brought that out on my comments I emailed to Liz. I’m a big supporter of MSA so I happily spent about an hour or more writing up some advice/critiques/praise for this new program. But not getting anything back -even a thanks – after a couple weeks was discouraging.

Teresa

Love seeing the reviews and pics from various people. I haven’t received my bag yet, but definitely have items coming that are included here that I can look forward to.
Thanks

I love when real women review products part of the reason I love MSA. 🙂 I also love that some pale skinned women are included, I have very fair skin, dark hair and dark eyes. I love to see what I can get away with wearing when other people wear it too. You all five me hope. ❤️ Great job women!! You are all gorgeous inside and out. 🙂
