VetPet Box (Multi-Cat Version) May 2020 Review

Every month, VetPet Box sends toys, supplies, and wellness items:

You always get a pamphlet with information on a health topic. This month's topic related to hyperthyroidism. (We don't show the inside because the information is considered a benefit of subscribing.) We were worried about that for awhile with Monkey several years ago, but repeated tests have shown he is OK.

On to the items:

Pet House Candle in Lavender Green Tea - Retail Value $21.95

You will receive these every now and then in the cat version of VetPet Box. They are strongly scented and made from soy wax with a cotton wick and natural fragrances so they are non-toxic. This scent is mostly lavender but I like it. Our house doesn't smell quite so much as it used to, as Pumpkin (the puppy) is having many fewer accidents inside and I have replaced all my litterboxes and litter mats with new ones, but with the weird weather, sometimes the heat and AC don't come on and air doesn't circulate so it is nice to have this around anyway. Also, these last a long time.

Mad Cat Catty Cactus Kicker - Retail Value $7.99

I didn't know Mad Cat made larger toys. This is the first I've seen of their kickers. But they have the same catnip and silvervine mix as always, so Madison is a fan. (He was a little camera shy with this when I was taking photos, naturally.) As always, this is very cute and also well made.

Sassycat Rabbit and Duck (1.25 oz) - Retail Value $6.32 (found here for $5.51)

These are freeze-dried treats and, of the two types of treat this month, this was the favorite, in that all three cats would eat it. I was a little surprised by that because it didn't smell as much as the whitefish (see below) but Madison and Monkey, who don't always want freeze-dried treats, enjoyed this. It is not super hard like other freeze-dried treats, which is also nice and makes it easier for the kitties to eat.

Sassycat Whitefish (0.88 oz) - Retail Value $5.99 (found here for $5.49)

This is freeze-dried fish and smells like tropical fish food (which of course is made of fish...). Sneaky thinks it is great so she will get most of this before and after her asthma inhaler (it's how we get her into the room for the inhaler and also kind of a reward for not disemboweling us afterwards). Madison and Monkey sniffed but didn't eat.

Mad Cat Magic Meowshroom - Retail Value $4.99

This is from the same company that made the cactus but is from their smaller line of cat toys. My cats prefer to just roll around on the floor on these, as well as rubbing their faces on them, but they are older and not super active and as long as they are getting some enjoyment out of the toys, I am happy. Madison, in particular, responds to silvervine pretty strongly.

Kittybelles Bad Kitty Tequila - Retail Value $4.99

I had seen some toys from this company's line of dog toys before but had never received any of their cat toys. This is a small plush toy with crinkle paper and it was a huge hit, which you will see in the photos below. Once again, rolling on the floor on top of it and face-rubbing was the preferred method of interaction.

Kittybelles Taco - Retail Value $5.99

This is from the same company as the tequila and the cats' reaction was also about the same. This is a small toy but that is honestly what my cats seem to prefer (well, Monkey will play with kickers sometimes, especially when he thinks I am not watching). I'm happy to have discovered a new line of cat toys.

Munchiecat Sushi Toy - Estimated Value $4.50 (Buy an assorted 4-pack for $18)

This was a new brand for me as well. They make a whole line of sushi-themed cat toys (as well as some pretty cute wine-and-cheese-themed toys). This is a catnip plush that's on the small-to-medium side. I like the individual wrapping because I find that catnip in toys stays fresher if it is enclosed in a bag, whereas volatile components of catnip oil can dissipate when there's less packaging. That often gets a stronger reaction from the cats. This seems very well-made.

Gratuitous cat photos:

Verdict: I calculated a total value of about $62.72 for the May VetPet Box for cats. Although it was not explicitly stated, the toys this month mostly fit a Cinco de Mayo theme (and this box was timely received for that). I had just finished another one of those candles so I was glad to get this one (plus the scent was new to me) and I learned about some new brands of cat toys as well as a new product line -- the kicker -- from a toy brand I already knew my cats liked. I feel like this box is really good for sending out toys and treats my cats will actually show a strong interest in, and that is definitely appreciated as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? New subscribers usually get an introductory box. However, if you contact VetPet Box, you can get a past month’s box (like say you really want to get the dental one more than once, because your cat has bad teeth).

  • Rabbit and duck treats $4.53
  • Whitefish treats $4.30

Laurel

I’ve always read that lavender oil is toxic to cat’s because they don’t have the enzymes needed to process it out of their bodies. I don’t know that I’d burn a candle with lavender in it around my kitties.

They’re not taking it into their bodies with the candle. I suppose they might smell a little but the number of molecules it takes to achieve a scent in a candle or a room is really small and not going to be an issue. I wouldn’t feed it to them.

The best thing about any of it is picture 6 (Madison with the tequila). He has long hair on the bottom of his feet! Really long!! How adorable is that??????????????????? My Jessie looks like him but she does not have those amazing tufts on her “soles”. I’ve had Maine Coons, but these long tufts on the feet are new to me. GORGEOUS! He also looks like a lion in the picture, with a mane around his neck. My Jessie loses that mane when the weather gets hot (it becomes tumbleweed on the floor), but it’s not hot yet here in Georgia so she’s still lion-like.

Monkey actually has more impressive toe hair (front and back) it just doesn’t show up in a lot of his pictures.

The weather in my part of Georgia has cycled so much that both Monkey and Madison shed, then stop, then start again. We get lots of hairballs.
