Cairn June 2020 "Keep It Movin'" Review
Each month Cairn includes the Cairn Scout, which is a newspaper-style info guide that sets the scene for the monthly theme. It also tells about all the items that were chosen for your box, gives details about box upgrades, shouts out to subscriber perks, showcases a community feature, and more. The June Keep It Movin' theme is a nod to heightened activity levels as the temperatures rise, and this month I got hooked up with three items to use and wear while I'm out doing my thing.
Coal Headwear Provo Hat - Retail Value $32
My curiosity was piqued when I picked my Cairn box up off my porch this month—it was really light. After last month's box, which was filled with four great but small items for camping preparedness, I was happy to meet with this nice hat! I have one Patagonia ball cap that I wear under all circumstances (hiking, running, rainy day, sunny day, etc.), and while it serves me well for all those occasions, I do sometimes worry that salty sweat lines will start to appear. This Coal hat is really lightweight, breathable, easily adjustable, and gender neutral. It will be my new running hat—actually maybe my whole family's new running hat!
Yep, everyone wanted in on it. How's that for versatile! The elastic, drawstring-like size adjuster is very easy-to-use and secure, even on a tiny person's head. Part of what has me so thrilled about this item is that I never would have bought it for myself, but I will definitely wear it often. Actually, I received a Coal beanie in my very first Cairn box I reviewed and it has held up awesomely, and been a favorite. So I'm not surprised I love this one, too!
Welly Human Repair Kit - Retail Value $8.99
I smiled when I saw a Welly tin tucked into my Cairn box this month because I think they do what they do well. I picked up a tin of patterned bandaids from this brand at Target a year or so back, and I still have most of them left, but it's nice to have an extra batch to keep in the car or with our camping supplies. This kit came with 15 bandaids of two different sizes, hand sanitizer, triple antibiotic ointment, and 1% hydrocortisone anti-itch ointment. It makes for a very basic "first aid kit," but in many cases the basics are all you need. I actually broke my favorite mug the other day and stepped on a tiny piece of the ceramic, so I already had the opportunity to reach for one of these tiny bandaids, putting it on the outer side of my foot. I alternated between sandals, sneakers, and barefoot throughout the rest of the day and it stayed on securely for about 24 hours until I peeled it off. Knowing this, I would feel good slapping one of these bandaids on a hiking shoe blister and trusting it wouldn't make matters worse!
Protein Puck, "The Maverick" (Cocoa, Cashew, Cinnamon), 1.34 oz - Buy a 12-pack for $19.27, or subscribe and save
Delicious, high-protein trail treats are like gold 'round these parts! This one is a great not-too-sweet option, though it is very dense. Great for sharing with a friend.
Verdict: June's Cairn subscription made me happy! I appreciated the slightly bigger ticket item this month (the hat) after a variety of small, inexpensive items last month, and I thought it was rounded out well with two other offerings that were useful and yummy. Some months, Cairn's curation feels a little specific, but this month I was sent things my whole family can share.
This box costs $29.95 (less if you subscribe for longer), including free shipping, and the contents add up to approximately $44 (using an estimated value for the Protein Puck). This value is a few dollars higher than usual for Cairn!
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Based on their subscription model, your items may vary based on your survey responses and boxes you have received in the past.
Value Breakdown: This box cost $29.95 + free US shipping, but I estimate it contained $44 worth of goods. That comes down to a value of approximately $14.66 per item.
