Our May/June 2020 Review
NewBeauty TestTube is one of my favorite subs because they send really unique and new items, many of which I have never even heard of! This booklet is a great reference for each item we received this month. It is full of additional info, interesting facts, and editor commentary.
Now, on to the items!
Dr. Brandt pores no more Luminizer Primer, 1 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $38.00
This product is a familiar one, and one I like! It feels really nice on my face and is a great first step to a dewier look since there it the tiniest amount of shimmer from crushed pearl powder. I also like this on my face alone on days I am not wearing makeup because it gives a smoother blurred finish and a good bit of hydration. The scent also reminds me of some of the Sisley products I love. If I could change one thing it would be to add some sunscreen (and save me a step!) but I still really like this primer, even without SPF.
Le Mieux Hyaluronic Serum, 1 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $60.00
This is actually one of the brands I had heard of while in esthetician school (classes have been on pause for months now!) and instructors seem to really like the brand. It looks like you might actually need a pro account to order on their site, but I did manage to track it down via Art of Skincare for the same price. Most of you know that I love hyaluronic acid. This molecule holds 1000 times its own weight in hydration, but is small, meaning that payload of moisture is easily absorbed into your skin. This serum has a mix of molecular sizes for optimum absorption. You really need to use only a few drops of this. It feels kind of slimy at first but then starts to absorb, leaving behind skin with no film. This is a really, REALLY great hydrator for skin with acne concerns. In addition, the formula has panthenol, green tea extract, vitamin E, and other skin saviors.
RUSK PUREMIX Native Fig Replenishing 3-in-1 Leave-In, 6 fl oz - Retail Value $18.00
I love a good leave-in conditioner, especially since I let my hair air dry and often sleep on it damp, which can be terrible for texture and tangles. I didn't know if I would really like this one since I was worried it might have a very fruity scent. I am happy that the scent is actually so nice! It is figgy, but in a sophisticated and perfumy sort of way. This stuff is also on the thicker side. Most leave-ins I have tried are more of a liquid texture while this one feels like a cream or balm, even though it does dispense with a spray. For this reason, I like to spray a little in my palms, rub them together, then finger comb it through my damp hair. It absolutely ups the shine and softness factor on my strands. While I don't dye my hair right now, it has some nice color-protecting ingredients like quinoa, so if you do, this is great!
Terra & Co. Brilliant Black Toothpaste, 4 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $25.00
I have pretty-on-the-outside teeth that look nice but have all sorts of problems. For that reason, I do prefer toothpaste and mouthwashes with fluoride since my enamel is super thin. I get that this isn't for everyone, but it works for my finicky teeth!
If you are on the hunt for a fluoride-free, whitening, and organic option though, this is going to be pretty exciting for you. In addition to charcoal, this formula has coconut oil, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil. It is not as minty as your normal storebought brands, but it is certainly more natural. When I tried it out I did notice it left my mouth a little black, but a quick rinse with water fixed that!
ORLY Breathable Treatment + Color in 'Pep in Your Step', 18 ml - Full Size! Retail Value $9.99
FYI: Shades may vary.
I was kind of hoping to get the light blue shade from the spoilers, but how can I be disappointed with such a fun pink shade instead? ORLY is one of the polish brands that seems to last longer on my thin nails, so I buy it quite often! This 'Breathable' line is supposed to be even longer lasting on my nails, and I did remain chip-free for 5 days, which for me is a really, really long time. Usually, I am noticing chips by day 2 or 3 with most formulas. This shade was a 2 coater for me and I was impressed that it dried faster than most of my others and retained a nice shine that let me skip a topcoat.
Two coats here! It turned out brighter than the bottle would suggest, but it's summer baby, and I am here for it!
ScarAway 100% Silicone Scar Gel, 20 g (3-month supply) – Full Size! Retail Value $24.99 (found here for $24.32)
I am super blessed to have skin that doesn't tend to scar, even though I am a walking disaster when it comes to cuts and scrapes. Will is less lucky and scars really easily! He also has a really physical job and is always coming home with new cuts and abrasions. He recently cut his leg at work and has a pretty gnarly and somewhat fresh scar right now. I convinced him to try this out and he agreed mainly because "it isn't smelly or glittery" which is truly the majority of the things I bring home, so who could blame him? The rollerball makes application easy, though it seems to clog every so often, I found squeezing the tube helped with this. Basically, the 100% silicone formula comes out in a very thin coating. While the instructions recommend letting it dry, I found that it never completely dried, which was still fine. As to scar prevention? Only time will tell.
NeoCell Collagen Protein Peptides, 15.1 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $39.95
Dang, this was a massive tub of powder! I was really surprised that such a big size was included. I am really bad about vitamins and supplements in general but I have friends who swear by collagen for their hair and nails. My hair probably doesn't need help, but my nails sure do! Collagen has been shown to also help with fine lines and wrinkles, and to help joint health. Collagen powder can be icky, but depending on what you mix it with it can also be flavorful or at least not awful. This formula is pomegranate acai flavored so I tried it just with water AND with Trader Joe's Watermelon Cucumber cooler. It was actually kind of tasty either way! The flavor felt much more like some sort of energy drink powder than a collagen powder. You can also add it to smoothies, which will likely be my choice tomorrow.
Naisture 3-Step Skin Care Kit : Exfoliating, 2 masks - Retail Value $4.00 each / $8.00
Naisture 3-Step Skin Care Kit : Recharging, 2 masks - Retail Value $4.00 each / $8.00
Finally, our last item is a set of 4 masks, each with three steps! The first is an exfoliating kit with a cleanser, AHA peeling pad, and a plumping sleeping mask. The second is a recharging kit with a cleanser, sheet mask, and moisturizer. The first I tried was the recharging set, after a day in the sun sketching. The cleanser was a heavier, thick formula that looked like crushed pearls. It felt really nice on my skin and left it makeup and sunscreen free. I then tried the sheet mask which was coated in a clear serum that was cooling and calming. The final step for that pouch was a lightweight moisturizer that sealed in hydration and left me feeling quite refreshed.
The second pouch had the same cleanser as the first step, but the second step was an AHA exfoliating pad. There are actually two of these inside, which was nice! I simply rubbed them all over my face and then let them dry. The final step was a gel sleeping mask, which could have been heavier IMO, but I like to sleep in the thick stuff! It has cica inside though, which is one of my fave redness reducers, so I can't complain.
I really liked these little kits! They would actually be perfect for weekend trips, though I sadly have nothing like that scheduled anytime soon.
Verdict: This NewBeauty TestTube was one of my favorites in recent memory. Aside from the toothpaste, everything in here will certainly be used with enthusiasm! Even Will is slightly enthusiastic about the scar gel. (Slight enthusiasm is quite a lot on the Will scale.) My favorite items were the nail polish, serum, and primer, though I also love the leave-in conditioner! I am also excited to see if I notice any real difference with using the collagen powder regularly. The value here was also nice, coming in around $231.93 which is fab for less than $40 including shipping. Hopefully, the upcoming NBTT selections will be this good!
