The Sill May 2020 Box Review

The plant was very carefully packaged, just like always. This is a good thing because this little one had a rough trip to me by the looks of it! Aside from some dirt loss, the plant itself was totally safe.

There was an envelope with some additional info on my new friend. Though this pamphlet says I have received a Calathea, I am pretty sure my plant this month is actually a Bird's Nest Fern.

Bird's Nest Fern

Small Mint Dolores Planter - Buy a medium size here for $37.00

FYI: This plant arrived about 5 inches tall inside the planter and about 10 inches across.

Though this is my second Bird's Next fern from The Sill, I do love these because they are wildly wavy and low-light tolerant. And I am way into this planter! It is my first from the Dolores style and I am a little bummed out they don't sell the small size anymore. I feel like it somehow complements the wild and free vibes of the fern. These ferns are tropical, so they do like a little humidity. I have one that I keep in our bathroom and it seems to love the steam from the shower! There is a little hollow hole of leaves in the center which form a slight cradle shape, which I am guessing is where the name came from. I mean, if I were a bird, I would totally sleep in the center of this fern.

These little leaves are too cute. They remind me of crimped '90s hair in the best way.

The Verdict: My May delivery from The Sill was maybe not the plant I should have received but it was still one I loved. And the planter was a homerun style-wise! During this time where I am not really venturing out to the greenhouses quite yet, this is a happy new spot of green for my living room or office.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first plant and pot combo will be from the June selections.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Has anyone tried Succulent Studios? That sub sends 2 succulents for $10 + 6.50 shipping.

No planter, but that could be a good thing. You can buy one you really like, that fits your house colors, etc.

I can’t believe I’ve never seen this sub before today. I love this plant and planter. I was disappointed to see only three color choices for planters are available. I may track this a little longer before taking the plunge.

I really like the planter this time. They usually seem very plain, at least for my taste.
I have 2 large tropical plants and I regularly give them “bath time”-which means I take them into the bathroom with the door closed while I shower, then I turn up the hot water to make it more steamy and let them sit in there for a while. They seem to love it (and, they have survived years of rough Wisconsin winters with me)

I’ve been getting The Plant Club on Cratejoy and it’s only $25 a month. So far I’ve gotten a Spiralis with a special plastic pot to keep the roots submerged and a Peperomiodes in a 2 part ceramic pot. They include dirt and/or stones, a little extra, and a magnet.

I think this is an adorable subscription but it’s so expensive. If it were less expensive it’s something I’d love to subscribe to.

I agree the price point is way to high, but I guess people who really dont know anything about plants probably won’t notice that. Also to me some of the fun of getting a new plant is actually going to a garden center.
