Earthlove Summer 2020 Review
This booklet was included with information about the theme and the items inside.
ECOrenaissance: A Lifestyle Guide for Cocreating a Stylish, Sexy, and Sustainable World by Marci Zaroff - Retail Value $17.00
This book tackles that time old struggle between being eco-conscious and also living with luxurious things and experiences. Inside are some really interesting and easily digestible facts on everything from fashion to food, along with calls to action.
ECOrenaissance provides inspiring tips and tricks for how to live and shop in harmony with nature without sacrificing style or luxury, and how best to benefit from the current renaissance—a global rebirth of sustainable economics, progressive ethics, and green culture—through the wisdom of eco-entrepreneurs, green fashion designers, organic food purveyors, and innovative leaders of this new movement.
Real Ebony Wood Wanderer Sunglasses by WUDN - Retail Value $39.00
FYI: Originally sunglasses from Canadian company SKRP were planned for this box, but because of COVID/shipping issues, these from WUDN were sent instead to subscribers.
Although I don't really need sunglasses right now, there's something about this pair I really like. I think it is because they have a very retro shape and they really remind me of my mom's fave sunnies. Since I am slowly morphing into her (not a bad thing!), I might as well steal her look! These have biodegradable bioacetate frames and wooden arms. They feel sturdy but are also lightweight, and my favorite feature is the lack of those little nose cushions that always get stuck in my hair!
Here they are on!
Kokoa Botanics Body Butter Bar in 'Caribbean Coconut', 3.2 oz - Retail Value $15.00
I love the idea of body butter in a tube! It is pretty smart for your purse or desk. Simply push the bottom up and the product rises within the tube, allowing you to rub it on your hands, legs, arms, wherever. The heat of your hands melts it down to a soft consistency very quickly. The texture here is super smooth, and though there is a little shine left after massaging it in, it does absorb completely if you give it a little time. The scent here is a sweet coconut sort of deal, which normally isn't my bag, but this blend of coconut oil, shea, and cocoa butter feels so dreamy, I don't mind.
Lesser Evil Organic Popcorn, 0.88 oz – Buy five 5 oz bags for $19.99
This is my go-to popcorn brand and this butter flavored one is a perfect swap for the less healthy buttered popcorn you can pop in the microwave. There are always somehow big fluffy pieces inside that magically don't get crushed, and there are notably very few kernels and hard bits to avoid. I like this brand because you can kind of taste the coconut oil which adds a whole new level of yumminess. The bag is also biodegradable!
Gogh Jewelry Zero Waste Scuba Necklace – Retail Value $29.00
This delicate little necklace has a sterling silver chain, a round Amazonite stone bead, and two parts of used scuba gear that would normally go to waste. Together, this trio creates a very modern and artsy sort of vibe while repurposing what would be trash into something very stylish. Created by Szilvia Gogh (an inductee into the Women Diver's Hall of Fame!), these pieces serve to show that recycling and repurposing can be very chic indeed. I like how the three components can slide along the chain because I tend to fiddle with my jewelry, especially when thinking. So this is attractive as well as functional for me!
It is very simple and pretty.
No Trace Sandwich Bag - Retail Value $8.99
I was swooning over these cute whales before I even realized what this bag was. It is for sandwiches or other small snacks and because the opening overlaps, you don't have to worry about any tasty treats escaping. We try to avoid using plastic lunch bags in my home and though this has been made much easier with more time eating in, I still take lunches to class right now. This 100% organic cotton bag is the perfect size for my favorite sandwiches and I can easily wash it in the washing machine between uses. I think I might need a few more of these!
Cora Ball Reusable Clips, 3 count - Retail Value $9.85
While most of the bagged foods in my home come with their own closure or twist tie, Will is constantly losing them, which leads to the 'twist it and tuck it' move. This is not ideal for our bread. These bag clips are made of sustainable Baltic birch and are perfect for closing those bags in your kitchen or beyond. While I don't see this as a huge waste reducer in my home, we have been buying bread from the farmer's market and it usually is twist-tie free and in biodegradable bags. These will be ideal for keeping those loaves fresh while putting a few less plastic pieces into the trash each week.
Earthlove Sea Found Kit - Listed Value $25.00
This was such a unique addition to the box! Inside this kraft paper bag is an assortment of sea glass, broken pottery, twine, beads, and driftwood from Hawaii, Japan, and California. You can use these pieces to create your own suncatcher or just have them around the house for beauty's sake. None of the items have holes, so wrapping them securely can be a little difficult, but I found the result was worth it and the process was fun and relaxing.
Here is my completed piece.
Mystic Ginger Apothecary Botanical Hair Oil, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $15.00
The second body care item inside this month is a botanical hair oil handmade by herbalist and licensed hairdresser Kellie of Mystic Ginger Apothecary. This blend contains safflower, poppies, violets, elderflower, and calendula oils that work together to nourish your scalp. Once a week, the instructions recommend parting my hair into 4 sections and gentle massaging a few drops into my scalp, then shampooing. I was worried this might lead to extra greasy roots, but it wasn't bad and my scalp did feel less itchy and irritated.
The Original Apple Pencil - Retail Value $2.25
FYI: This is a bonus item for sharing your previous box on social media.
As someone who likes to do a lot of sketching outside, the natural feel of this genuine apple stick pencil only somehow adds to my sketches of trees, clouds, and other outside marvels. Both ends have about 1.5 inches of lead embedded inside, meaning you can use the other end when you run out. It will need to be sharpened by a blade because of its irregular shape, but the whole process is giving me serious Thoreau vibes.
Milkweed Seed Packets
Our last treat this month is a pair of seed packets to plant milkweed, the only food source for the beautiful and iconic monarch butterfly when it is in caterpillar form. Monarchs are endangered, so taking the time to add some sustenance to your garden is a really great action to take if you want to help! In addition, milkweed is actually a truly gorgeous plant with tall arching clusters of fragrant and tiny blossoms. You would seriously want a plant this pretty in your garden anyways!
The Verdict: I really loved this Earthlove box. I thought the whole curation felt elevated and special, and it also was very conscious! I can't think of a single item I disliked or something I won't get a lot of use out of. My favorites were the incredibly creative suncatcher kit, the sandwich bag, the necklace, and the milkweed seeds. This box does a great job of delivering great items as well as a ton of information that you can use to make easy swaps in your life that will be better for the planet. It is a great choice for anyone who wants to add eco-friendly surprises to their deliveries.
