Henny+Roo June 2020 Chicken Box Review
Just a heads up: Dizzy passed away this last week. I hatched her myself from a little blue egg I bought on eBay, and my face was the first thing she ever saw. And I am more than a little heartbroken. This month’s review will still feature my girl, Satchel along with a few other friends, but I wanted to let you all know before we get farther along.
Our box comes complete with an info card explaining all of the items arriving this month.
Chicken Wisdom by Melissa Caughey - Retail Value $12.99
This is so cute, and made me weirdly emotional! I really think chickens have so much to teach us, and this book of quotes attached to chicken images is really well done and thoughtful. It also came with a folding frame so you can display your favorites.
Chicken Banquet Mineral Block, 2 lbs - Retail Value $7.99
I am thrilled such a large bag of treats came so I can spoil Satchel. She certainly deserves some extra love. This mix has all of her faves, such as dried worms, corn, and herb pellets.
Here she is foraging through the clovers.
Flock Fixer, 5.5 oz - Retail Value $9.99
This is a summertime lifesaver for chickens, especially on the super hot days. I like to think of it as chicken Gatorade! Adding this powder to their water gives them an electrolyte boost, as well as providing prebiotics and probiotics to help digestion.
Canvas Coop Cleaning Mask - Retail $9.95
I had to smile when I saw this! Though you could technically wear this out for virus coverage, it is a little porous for that. But that's ok, because it makes it perfect for wearing on coop cleaning day, when dust and bedding particles get kicked up and super messy.
Lavender Epsom Salts, 1 lb
I like to use Epsom salts in the bath, but they are also great for your hen if she becomes egg-bound or is in some other sort of distress. These have a relaxing lavender scent.
Chicken Whisperer Magazine - Subscribe here!
I love this magazine! I tend to like the other sort of "homestead" sort of ones too, but this one is totally focused on chickens and ducks. There is loads of fun and helpful info in here for anyone with a flock.
Saline Solution and Syringe
This duo is very handy to have in your first aid kit for flushing out injuries or administering meds to your birds. It came with a saline solution you can use to flush out any sort of debris that might end up in a cut or eye.
Laying Box Liner
Our last item comes in every box and is a super handy laying box liner. This helps keep your eggs clean after the hens leave them in the elevated boxes they use to lay. Satch is past the egg-laying age, but she appreciates a fresh "mattress" every month.
Chickens are funny little creatures who define enthusiasm. Every morning is a rush to get outside and marvel at how tall the grass had magically grown overnight, find new yummy flowers, and bugs, the BUGS! Literally a scrap of old vegetable found in the compost pile was an epic event and cause to celebrate the most ordinary day as the best day ever. Dizzy had many best days ever and I can be happy because if that.
To some people, it might seem really odd to mourn a chicken like this. But I know you all understand. I am so utterly and forever touched that so many of you also loved her so much and looked forward to seeing her adventures each month. For now, Henny+Roo reviews are going to be paused, but Satchel will get loads of extra attention, love, and treats, so don’t worry. I’ll pass your love and hugs onto her.
Thank you all so, SO much for letting me share them both with you and for being one of the brightest spots of MSA for me, on a very personal level. Thank you.
The Verdict: Henny+Roo was very bittersweet for me this time. I have enjoyed this box so much, and I know Dizzy and Satchel did too. As someone who really thinks everyone should have chickens, this is a must-have subscription box for treating them and yourself as well.
