Keto Krate July 2020 Review
This month was a little different for me. I recently underwent surgery to remove my gallbladder, and after doing hours of research, I found many articles stating that once you have this removed you should stick to a low-fat diet. After talking with my surgeon and explaining that I have been following a keto lifestyle, she said they usually recommend a low-fat diet for 3 months following a gallbladder removal but that nobody listens and most people seem to do fine. While I didn't jump right into eating a big juicy cheeseburger with bacon, I am slowly shifting towards a lower carb, higher fat diet, and much to my satisfaction, my body is accepting that. Let's see what kind of items we received this month!
How cute is this pamphlet? I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the funny comics, especially the "Keto Beach" part! This fun little informational guide features a success story and recipes. This booklet also includes a link to this month's product info (krate.club) and tips on how to manage your subscription.
Keto Farms Maple Candied Pecans - Retail Value $2.00 (Buy a 6 pack for $14.99)
Fat 20g | Net Carbs 1g | Taste Score: 10/10
Ohh yes, yes, yes!! Pecans are one of my favorite nuts, and candied with maple is absolutely next level! How does a low-carb maple candied pecan taste though? Is it like the real thing? It absolutely is!! These crunchy, sweet pecans are perfectly buttery and have a very real maple flavoring. I found these to have no yucky aftertaste, and while they were delish on their own, I would happily add them to some vanilla Halo Top, or some keto brownies! These are definitely going on my shopping list!
Dang Foods Toasted Coconut Bar, 1.4 oz - Listed Value $3.00 (Buy a box of 12 for $33.20)
Fat 16g | Net Carbs 5g | Taste Score: 5/10
Dang Foods has some pretty tasty snacks, including the mango coconut chips they sent a few months ago, but I have to say this bar just wasn't my favorite. While the toasted coconut flavor really comes through, if you aren't a huge fan of coconut you aren't going to be impressed. Because this is the actual flavor of the bar, I found it a bit bland. I wish they would have thrown in a couple of fruit bits or some sugar-free chocolate chips just to enhance the flavor a bit. I love that this bar is made from plant-based fats, cocoa butter, and almond butter, and it fits into my macros just fine, but I may have had better luck with a different flavor.
Keto and Company Banana Caramel Muffin Mix, 8.8 oz - Listed Value $9.99
Fat 11g | Net Carbs 1g | Taste Score: 9/10
I am a big fan of these dessert mixes so every time I get one I practically squeal. This banana caramel keto muffin mix smelled soooo good when I opened the bag! It literally smelled like ripe bananas and melted caramel! The only complaint I have is that I see they sent either this mix or the chocolate cake mix, and although this was really good, I am a chocoholic and I realllly want to give that one a go...looks like I will just have to order it!
I was happy with how easy these muffins were to make. All I had to do is pour in the mix, then add 4 eggs and melted butter. Once stirred, you add in a bit of cider vinegar and mix a bit more. Using muffin papers I poured the mix evenly into each paper and baked. The mixture was super fluffy and light, almost like a Cool Whip fruit salad! I noticed my muffins came out a bit flat compared to the picture on the package, but they had a soft and chewy texture, with a really true banana and caramel flavor. I found no hidden aftertastes, and really enjoyed these—especially with a dollop of ice cream!
Ultima Replenisher Electrolyte 6 Pack - Listed Value $3.99 (Buy a trial pack for $7.99)
Fat 0g | Net Carbs 0g | Taste Score: 9/10
Up here in Minnesota, it has been almost 90 degrees and humid every. single. day. I am just not used to that!! That being said, we have been drinking water like crazy and I love the fact that we can add these little babies into our bottles for some electrolyte and mineral replenishment from sweating our butts off all day! We received a trial pack similar to this back in February, but we only received 3 flavors then, where this month we received 6! I have to say the cherry pomegranate was my favorite! They were just sweet enough that it made me want to drink more, without being too much. Perfect for these hot summer days!
Proudly Pure Parmesan Crisps 2.5 oz - Listed Value $6.49 (Buy a pack of 4 for $19.99)
Fat 7g | Net Carbs 1g | Taste Score: 10/10
Cheese is one of my favorite staples in life, and when I heard there was a chance I may have to avoid cheese after my surgery, I almost cried. Thankfully, I am able to eat cheese with no problems, and this parmesan crisp version is one of my favorites! If you are looking for a delicious snack, these crunchy cracker-like crisps are for you. Made with 100% all-natural aged parmesan cheese, they host the perfectly sharp bite of a good parmesan in every bite. They were a bit overwhelming for my husband, but I found them perfect for my liking! While I enjoyed them by themselves, I can totally see having these on a traditional meat and cheese tray for a bit of flair! Looks like another item is going on my shopping list...
Ayoba Traditional Biltong Premium Cuts of Tender, Air Dried Beef 1 oz - Listed Value $3.99, Retail Value $3.99
Fat 5g | Net Carbs 0.5g | Taste Score: 10/10
Like I have said before, I am the one that is following the keto lifestyle, but my kids (and sometimes my husband) hover over my shoulder as I open this box to see what kind of meats may be in it. This month we received this tender, flavorful snack that originated in South Africa. Because this meat is marinated before being air dried in a temperature-controlled room for 14 days, it isn't jerky, and because of this process it has more protein than jerky! How neat is that? We really enjoyed the flavor of this beef, and found the saltiness to be just right, with a hint of pepper. We were all fans!
Better Than Good Ranch Protein Puffs - Listed Value $3.00 (Buy a 6 pack for $15.97)
Fat 3.5g | Net Carbs 3g | Taste Score: 10/10
I have had these veggie-infused protein puffs before, and I am a HUGE fan! These ranch flavored puffs are made from whey protein powder, real veggies, and are great for diabetics, keto dieters, and weight watchers. My kids absolutely love these too, which is awesome as they are low in carbs, sugar, and calories! It's a great snack to pack in your purse and take on the go. I also noticed they have a vast variety of flavors on their website and the tangy BBQ ones are calling my name. Yummmm!
DNX Grass Fed Beef Uncured Bacon Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper, 1.25 oz - Buy a pack of 12 for $33.99
Fat 10g | Net Carbs 0g | Taste Score: 10/10
More beef? I will take it!! This DNX bar was the all-around perfect bar for me. It was not so dry that it could still be chewed, but it wasn't so greasy that it slipped out of my hand. The uncured bacon flavor topped with cracked pepper infused so perfectly that I felt as if I was almost eating a steak! The only problem I had with this bar is that it was sooo tiny. Don't just tease me, I need more!! Added note: I see they sent 2 different bars this month. While I received the grass fed beef bar, others may have received the Free Range Chicken and Raspberry Bacon bar...for future reference Keto Krate: next time please send us both. 🙂
Keto Bars Chocolate Peanut Butter - Listed Value $2.80 (Buy a box of 10 for $24.95)
Fat 21g | Net Carbs 3g | Taste Score: 8/10
I have tried other variations of Keto Bars in the past, and I can say from experience they are very strong in flavor. Upon my first bite my taste buds are overwhelmed with deep fudgy chocolate, combined with an intense saltiness, followed by a surge of peanut butter. If the flavor isn't enough for you, the texture also is flaky and chewy with bits of coconut in every bite. My first thought was that this was way too much for me, but as I nibbled, my mouth grew accustomed to this very rich tasting bar, and I actually found myself really enjoying it. I can definitely see myself reaching for this during movie night with the fam when my kids are passing around the box of Whoppers!
Sweet Logic Red Velvet Mug Cake Mix - Listed Value $4.00 (Buy a 5 pack for 17.99)
Fat 15g | Net Carbs 4g | Taste Score: 9/10
I love mug cakes, and seeing this easy-to-make mix made my day! I have made mug cakes in the past, but measuring out all of the ingredients is time consuming and messy. This mix can be made with just water, or with butter and an egg. I opted for the butter and egg version as we have an abundance of eggs, and I was very happy with the results! See below for pictures.
The entire process from start to finish for this red velvet cake was less than 5 minutes, and I was quite pleased with the results. I found this cake to be tender and moist with the slightest hint of cocoa. I also tasted little flecks of coconut to enhance the flavor. An interesting fact about this mix is that the color is naturally colored with vegetables like beets! Next time I may have to whip up some keto-friendly cream cheese frosting for the ultimate treat, but even unfrosted it was tasty!
The Verdict: I really enjoy the Keto Krate box, and am always surprised! I found a lot of new snacks that I haven't previously tried with quite a few winners! I love the fact that this box gives me a variety of snacks to keep around the house when a craving occurs. It has helped me get back on the keto wagon and start eating healthier again. Like I have shared in the past, I am a fan of these mix kits, and my kids are finding these low-sugar treats to be a delight as well! I can't wait to see what I receive next month!
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Unfortunately, no. If you subscribe today, your first box will be the August box.
Value Breakdown: The box costs $39.99 + free shipping which means that each of the 10 items in the box has an average cost of $3.99. I also want to share that on their website, it states the retail value of this month's products is $42.25, but you would pay $35.91 in shipping costs for each product, plus you would have to spend $39.34 to get the discount code savings of minimum orders for each product, which would bring your total value to $117.50, so I think $39.99 is a pretty good price to test out different snacks and find new faves!
