Lip Monthly July 2020 Review

This little card lists a few of the items in our July box and their retail values. Please note that while some items are listed, that does not mean that all subscribers will receive these items due to limited inventory.

Lip Monthly sends its products in a little makeup bag that holds all of your lippies. I love this fun design!

So Susan Haute Light Highlighting Pencil in Eggshell - Retail Value $19.95

Let's start with our non-lip item. This highlighter stick is a cute little thing that could be kept in your purse for on-the-go touch-ups. It's actually a matte very light peach, almost white color. It's too light for me to use on my cheeks, but it works well under my brows and at the corners of my eyes. You can see it pictured below in the photos with the next item! This pencil is hypoallergenic, free from parabens and phthalates, and contains Eyeseryl® Peptide & White Truffle extract which can help reduce eye bags and increase elasticity in your skin. I may have to try this under my eyes next time!

Appeal Cosmetics Ultra Creme Liquid Lipstick in Dolce - Retail Value $21.00

This lipstick goes on smoothly, dries quickly, and has some pretty great staying power. It didn't really budge even with drinking and eating.

Since we've just returned from the beach, I have a bit of color at the moment and while nudes don't usually work for me, I felt like this one wasn't too bad! It's actually pretty dark and had my complexion been a bit paler, it might have been too much for me, but for now it seems to work!

Dirty Little Secret Lipstick in Naked - Retail Value $10.00

This lipstick is another nude which is smooth, creamy, and lightweight. It has a good amount of pigment to it without being too heavy. It says it smells like candy and I do get a faint sweet scent from it. It feels moisturizing on my lips, but the finish is very matte.

This one almost looked like nothing on me. There was just a hint of color and I honestly can't tell if it makes my lips look darker or lighter? Not bad, but I'll have to see how it works when my tan fades.

Sorme Perfect Performance Lip Color in Wish - Retail Value $12.00

The tip of this one got a tiny bit smushed, but it still worked just fine! This lipstick has just a bit of shimmer to it and contains vitamin E. This one was smooth and sheer but the brown sparkles made my lips look a bit darker in color.

I'm not sure how I feel about the metallic sparkle that this gives my lips, but since the coverage is so sheer, I think it's pretty wearable!

Here it is over the Appeal lipstick. It adds just a bit of shine to the matte color.

Swatched from top to bottom we have the So Susan (twice), Dirty Little Secret, Sorme, and Appeal. You can see how similar the shades are with just a bit of variation in their texture.

Verdict: This month's Lip Monthly colors weren't too exciting to me. They all felt so similar in color and even though the final product was different for each one, they were all very subtle on my lips. Usually, I have a lot less color in my face, so maybe once that fades these will be a bit bolder on me. There was nothing truly awful here, but I always like a little bit of color and some variety! The total retail value of these products comes to $62.95 which is pretty good for a $12.95/month subscription with a promised value of $50+!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up now, you’ll get the August box as your first box.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

I think all of them looked great on you! Id say this was a home run for you. I canceled long ago because I’m deep in complexion and none of that would work on me.

A shame that they work with Dirty Little Secret, after the company’s pants got pulled down for all the lying of the founder. I know that ipsy said they wouldn’t work with any of her carbon-copy companies again, and maybe Boxycharm too.

Agh! I hadn’t heard anything about that! I’ll have to check it out!

I posted about it on every MSA post that mentioned the associated brands for weeks, as did several other people, & you’re the first person I’ve seen respond to these reader concerns, Brandi.

Dirty Little Secrets, Steve Laurent, Faccia skincare, Luna by Luna, Bang Beauty, Saint Luxe Beauty are all companies under the umbrella of DLS. Since the Faccia scandal, the company is operating under the same address with a different name, Worldwide Import Services. Recently, their KAB Cosmetics products were in BoxyCharm.

The Faccia scandal, in case anyone needs a rundown, was when BoxyCharm included a “gold” face product in BoxyCharm Premium that supposedly retailed for $100. It was the first product launched from this “new” brand, & the CEO Emanuela deFalco posted about how she & her sister devoted hours, etc, to perfecting the formula. Cut to someone finding the EXACT product, same ingredients & packaging, available from a private label company in China for, I believe, less than $2 per unit.

deFalco immediately started digging a trench for herself by claiming that the producer of the Faccia product STOLE her FORMULA & that she demanded they remove it & was going to take legal action, etc etc etc. This seemed to be an obvious lie to many people, & it made people take a closer look at deFalco herself. Turns out her Instagram was filled with racism (including posts using the n-word), misogyny (including slurs against women & fat-shaming), and many irresponsible pro-drug-use posts (specifically referencing Molly).

People were, needless to say, grossed out. Many people wrote BoxyCharm, Ipsy, & Fashionsta, as well as other companies, asking for them to sever ties with these shell companies that deFalco owns. Ipsy & Fasionsta both said they would no longer feature these associated brands.

deFalco responded by making her Instagram private, and claiming that she was receiving death threats against her children, so she would no longer be posting. While I’m fully aware of brigading, doxxing, and just how nasty online comments can get, I saw no evidence of this sort of behavior from the people discussing these issues with DLS & deFalco; like, I didn’t even know she was married & had kids until I read these claims. Given all her other lies + the lack of screenshots or any kind of evidence to support these accusations, I believe the supposed threats are more lies intended to make herself appear to be a victim. And frankly I’m disgusted that a person would use their family in that way.

There is documentation on all of this in the r/BeautyBoxes community on Reddit, including screenshots of import records + screenshots of deFalco’s now deleted or locked Instagram posts. Do a search for “DLS”. I really encourage anyone reading this to do so, because I’m recounting this from memory, so it is colored by my opinions & judgements.

I ordered my first bag and it got lost in the mail. Took me about a week and a half to get them to resend. This time I got a tracking number so we will see.

Same here! When I finally got the reship of my firsst bag ,that was never actually shipped!, the lip balm was crushed. Plus, I ordered two of the summer bundles and they only sent one. I have emailed them five, yes five, times to get it reordered. It still has not shipped. Jason, if there is only one person in charge of customer emails, has responded each time but I still having received anything.

Same experience here. I ordered the Plus to try, it was supposed to ship in 2 days, didn’t ship it, they ordered a replacement, didn’t ship it, and now I’m supposed to believe it’s been shipped but it still says unfulfilled. I have to wait another 3 weeks before they will do anything. Their customer service is a nightmare! Never buying anything from them again
