Love Goodly Essentials Box June/July 2020 Review

Each Love Goodly box comes with an info card detailing the items included. With this June/July box came two new developments: first, Love Goodly shares that they have partnered with NOVICA, an online marketplace for home goods, clothing, jewelry, and more that supports artisans around the globe. The Love Goodly box and website experience, however, will continue uninterrupted. The second bit of news is that Love Goodly is introducing their first-ever makeup brand spotlight box this month: Canadian brand Evio Beauty. Evio Beauty's products are all-natural, vegan, conscious, cruelty-free, gluten-free, paraben-free, and non-toxic.

I suppose there's a third update, which is that I, Christen, am taking over for Love Goodly reviews! I'll be approaching this box from a slightly different angle than Marne did—while Marne is familiar with tons of clean beauty brands and is really knowledgeable about makeup and skincare products, I'm newer to beauty boxes. I'm constantly looking for clean, natural personal care products from brands that are Earth-conscious, so I'm excited for an exploratory Love Goodly experience.

Evio Beauty Pore-fect Primer, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $23

Baby's first primer—I wasn't kidding when I said this would be an exploratory experience for me! My light makeup use is intentional, though—I'm a freckly-faced lady and always have been, and I really like my freckles. So, I've always focused on maintaining a simple, clean skincare regimen and never dipped my toe in experimenting with foundation. That said, the internet tells me you can totally wear primer on its own! The idea would be to apply it after moisturizing for a smooth, even contribution to a fresh-face look. Plus, this particular product has beneficial ingredients like soothing Green Tea to reduce redness and minimize the appearance of pores. I gave it a try and loved the silky feel of application, but didn't see a noticeable difference once it was on. This product also doesn't have much of a scent, so it was extremely subtle all around. I decided to pass this primer along to a friend!

Evio Beauty Lip-spo Liner in Val, 0.04 oz - Retail Value $11

While I love a bright or bold lip as much as the next gal, lip liner is another product (like primer) that I've generally not reached for over the years, thinking of it an extra step that didn't feel necessary. On top of that, summer is a time when I often go entirely makeup-free. But in the name of exploring, I was looking forward to giving this liner a try. Okay, what was I making such a fuss about all those years? It took like 2 seconds to line my lips with this super-smooth pencil, and when paired with the lip gloss of the same color (see below), it made me feel so nice! Also this month's Love Goodly card recommends trying it on its own for a matte lip look, which I can't wait to try. Do people do this with all lip liners? Man, I've really been missing out.

Evio Beauty Lip-spo Gloss in Val, 0.1 oz - Retail Value $11

Evio Beauty's Val is a gorgeous everyday color. It's simultaneously subtle and rich, and exactly the type of color I would choose for summer socializing. These days, that might look like a glass of wine on my front porch with my husband or a neighbor (reality check: with my toddler underfoot, haha). While the gloss on its own is pretty, the liner really punctuates it wonderfully. In the images above I'm wearing both.

Evio Beauty Lip-spo Gloss in Maple, 0.1 oz - Retail Value $11

Love Goodly sent another color of the same gloss. That's fun! I swatched all these lip products on my arm (see below) before trying them on my lips, and I didn't think this lighter color would be my jam at all judging by how rosy and almost frosty it looked on my arm—but on my lips it adds just a gentle and sweet little somethin'. It has a really faint shimmer to it, but didn't read as glittery when on my lips.

Here are all three lip products swatched together!

Evio Beauty Cleansing Wipes, 30 count - Retail Value $14

The final item Love Goodly included from Evio Beauty is these biodegradable cleansing wipes. They're made with hemp fibers, which are visible in each cloth, and their essence contains Cannabis Sativa Seed hemp oil from Aurora Cannabis. There's no CBD or THC in these wipes, but hemp has many benefits outside those two notable elements. The wipes have a very faint, fresh scent to them and are said to be great for wiping off even waterproof makeup. No surprises that I don't tend to wear waterproof makeup, so I can't attest to that use, but I did bring them along to the pool with me. Our pool's locker room showers are closed this summer as a COVID safety precaution, so I used one to wipe the sunscreen off my face as I was leaving and it worked well & felt refreshing.

Ultima Replenisher Electrolyte Hydration Powder, 3-pack assorted flavors - Listed Value $3.99 (Buy a 5-pack for $7.99 here)

There was one more item included in my box, and this is the only one that's not from Evio Beauty. It's a three-pack of sugar-free electrolyte powders! My family always keeps healthy electrolyte powder on hand for hydration after workouts and for when one of us isn't feeling well, to help us maintain hydration.

Raspberry electrolyte powder in 20 oz. of water.

I tried the raspberry flavor of this plant-based, caffeine-free, vegan, and gluten-free sampler first. It was surprisingly sweet! The recommendation is to add it to 16 ounces of water, but it was too strong for me, so I took a few big gulps then added four more ounces. That felt like a better ratio to me. It was flavorful and such a fun color!

Verdict: I had so much fun exploring the beauty products in my first Love Goodly box! I've never heard of Canadian brand Evio Beauty, and I was delighted by how smooth each skincare and makeup item felt going on. Such nice quality. My favorite items this month were the lip liner & Val lip gloss duo. The retail value for these 6 items is $73.99, which hits the mark of the $70+ value promised on the front of the info card, and is great value for a ~$35 box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You should be able to get the June/July box if you order before July 28. On that date is when the August/September box starts shipping out!

Value Breakdown: At $34.95 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Primer: $10.86
  • Lip Liner: $5.20
  • Lip Glosses: $5.20 each
  • Cleansing Wipes: $6.61

I, regularly, use a lip liner as either a lip primer (with a similar color lipstick or gloss) or all over my lips to be THE lip color. They last longer than some other lipsticks! They all look good on you!

A whole new world just opened up for me! This is such a cool hack for a product I used to think of as unnecessary. Thank you so much!

I rarely dabble with foundation. I use primer as my finish.

I’m already learning so much after receiving just one Love Goodly box + reading the comments. Thanks for sharing that, Alice!

I also got a kind of frosty shade (“Susan”) of Evio lip gloss in a Bombay & Cedar beauty box, & while I’m not too fond of the color, I do like the texture a lot. It has some of that Nars lip glide velvet-y feel vs a wet, goopy, or sticky gloss.

Agreed, Marion! The wet, goopy, sticky stuff just isn’t happenin’ for me, but I concur that this Evio stuff has a great texture.

For the primer review, the audience would probably want to know how it performed under makeup (foundation or concealer, etc). Maybe have someone you know try it under makeup and let us know how it performed?

The shades of lip items looked GREAT on you!!

Thanks, Sara! We are totally on the same page—I was hoping to have a more makeup-savvy friend try the primer and report back, but I’m just not seeing many friends these days while my family continues to lay low. Hopefully I won’t encounter many products through this box that I can’t use as directed, but if/when I do I’ll try to get another opinion to include. 🙂

Good lookin’ out on linking to Taryn’s B&C review, Marion! Thanks for that!

Taryn also reviewed the Evio primer in the April Bombay & Cedar Beauty box here: https://www.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/2020/05/beauty-box-bombay-cedar-review-apr-2020.html

Thank you, it makes much more sense to review a primer in terms of makeup wear than not. I have been noticing more and more that the comments are often needed to make sense of the MSA reviews lately. This site really does seem haphazard recently.

Kathy

I love that you swatched the lip products on someone with a darker skin tone!

I generally like this box, but I’m not a fan of this takeover. I wear a mask whenever I’m out and about (as everyone should), and sadly lipgloss is a thing of the past. You look great in it though!

Hopefully next month will be more appealing!

What Jackie meant to say, was, everyone should make their own decision about whether a mask is useful, necessary, or a fountain of germs.

I don’t wear a mask, and enjoy picking out a pretty lip color every day to wear. 🙂

It’s weird, but I’ve actually been doing the opposite of most people with my lip products — I usually just wear clear lip balm at work. I work at an elementary school, so I’ve been at home since March, & I’ve been using up all my lip glosses that I wouldn’t wear to work because of the color or lasting power or whatever. (I do still wear lip balm with my mask on days when I absolutely have to leave the house, but those are rare.)

Marion, I’m doing the same! I’m wearing my lip products at home!
