Medusa's Make-Up June 2020 "Unicorns, Mermaids, and Goddesses" Review
Along with my beauty items, I received an info card that details what items are in the box. I love how detailed this info card is (compared to some other boxes' info cards)!
Emily Alexandra Cosmetics Lipstick in Remie - Retail Value $18.00
The info card describes this lipstick as "perfect for Mermaids" because it's water-resistant and contains sunscreen! I'm always cautious of burning my lips when I'm out at the pool or beach, and I often just apply chapstick with sunscreen for that reason. I'm super excited to try this vibrant lipstick next time I'm outside for a long period of time - I've never tried a lipstick with sunscreen before! The shade I received is a vibrant poppy pink, which is brighter than my usual go-to shades of lipstick, but I think it's such a fun color for summertime.
The formula is very creamy and applied evenly. I didn't feel like it was especially waterproof, though - I had a lot of color transfer immediately. The lipstick removed easily with a makeup wipe, which is always a bonus. Plus, how adorable are the dragon scale (or mermaid tail!) details carved into the lipstick?
Medusa's Make-Up Mystical Eyedust in Medusa - Retail Value $11.95
I have to admit that I'm a little bit biased against loose powder eyeshadows - I feel like they inevitably get all over my bathroom and makeup drawer, no matter how careful I am with them! That being said, I might have to hold on to this one because it's such a pretty shimmery metallic color. The base of the pigment is a deep blue-charcoal color, and there are bronze and gold sparkles in it. I found that a little went a long way, and it blended out into a gunmetal color with a hint of deep midnight blue. This is a super dark, pigmented color, and I feel like it's much more of a wintery color to me - I picture wearing this with a black dress to a holiday party.
Medusa's Make-Up Unicorn Kiss Lip Sparkle - Retail Value $10.00
This lip balm was initially a bit of a fail. It wasn't packaged inside of anything (just came loose in the box), and some sort of oil or wax from the product had leaked all over the inside of my box. Each of the products was coated in an invisible, yet slimy film when I opened the box, and I couldn't tell what it was coming from until I opened up this balm. In addition to the leakage problem, the actual product had become stuck to the lid of the tin.
The balm has a pretty strong scent, which I also didn't love. It has a fake-sugar cotton candy smell, and the glitter you can see in the balm makes the product feel gritty on your lips. The photo online makes the product look smoother and more gel-like, so I wonder if whatever leaked out of the packaging ruined the integrity of what this product was supposed to be.
We contacted Medusa's Make-Up about the issue with the lip balm, and they immediately sent me a replacement. Additional policy info on replacements:
If a subscriber reaches out with the same issue, we provide a replacement in their next beauty box. No questions asked.
The replacement lip balm arrived more securely packaged in bubble wrap, and it had no leakage whatsoever. The actual product still looks slightly different than the photo on the info card (less glossy in real life), but the feel of this balm is completely different than the one I originally received. It feels substantial and creamy. When I first applied it, you could see the glitter on my lips, but as soon as I rubbed my lips together the glitter disappeared and left just a wash of light pink, which is perfect! I could feel the moisture from the balm for over an hour after I applied it, which is excellent wear time for me.
Medusa's Make-Up Lavender Moon Bath Salts, 1 oz - Retail Value $10.00
How stinkin' cute are these bath salts? This was one of my favorite items in the box, just because of how fun it looks to have a unicorn-inspired bath experience! I'm super sad that I couldn't try this product out quite yet, because the place I'm currently renting doesn't have a bathtub! I'm definitely going to save this packet for when we move soon!
The bath salts contain lavender Epsom salts and biodegradable glitter - I love that the glitter is eco-friendly.
Medusa's Make-Up Glitter Handle Eyeshadow Brush - Retail Value $6.00 (a set of 2 brushes is currently on sale for $7.01)
This was my favorite item in the box! The glitter handle is so adorable, and the synthetic bristles are densely packed and very soft. You can never have enough makeup brushes, and this flat style is so versatile for so many different eyeshadow looks. I like to use it to pack color onto my lid by using the side of the brush, or I like using the tip of the bristles to add a smaller wash of color over my eyeliner.
Here are swatches of everything! From top to bottom: the lipstick, the lip balm, and the eyeshadow. The lipstick is much brighter than I was anticipating!
Verdict: This month's Medusa's Make-Up Beauty Box was a very fun box with a good mix of products. The lipstick and eyeshadow had great formulas, even though I wasn't wild about the colors. I love that the company sent me a replacement for the lip balm, and I did a complete 180 on how I felt about the product after trying the replacement - it's great! The bath salts and eyeshadow brush were items I really see myself using in the future, and I was excited to receive them. The retail value for these five items comes to a whopping $55.95, which is about $40 over the $16.95 cost.
