Vegancuts Snack Box July 2020 Review
Vegancuts had a pretty solid year last year. Let’s see what they sent for July:
There was an information card this month. Lately they've had cute animal pictures on them and I think that is a fun change.
Lesser Evil Popcorn, Himalayan Gold (0.46 oz) - Buy 5, 5 oz bags for $19.99
I've had this brand lots of times. If you want bagged popcorn, it is pretty good. This has a real "movie theater butter" sort of flavor without all the stuff that's nutritionally bad for you. (And anyway, who is going to movie theaters these days?) The pieces were nice and large without a lot of unpopped kernels in the bottom, too.
Bubba's Fine Foods Kettle Cooked 'Nana Chips, Classic Sea Salt (1.3 oz) - Buy 8 bags for $12.99
This brand shows up in Vegancuts boxes fairly often, but they rotate flavors. Although I think I prefer the more strongly-flavored ones, these are pretty tasty and have a nice texture that's not too hard. I wouldn't necessarily call them "healthful," but they are probably OK to eat every now and then, and a good choice if you are looking for some extra potassium.
Dang Sticky Rice Chips, Sriracha Spice (0.7 oz) - Buy 12, 3.5 oz bags for $47.88
I don't think I've had these before? I didn't know that Dang made anything other than coconut chips. But these are tasty and not too spicy even for my mid-40s originally Midwestern palate. I think these come in a lot of flavors and I'd be interested in trying others, as well.
Craize Plantain Toasted Corn Crisps (1 oz) - Buy 4, 4 oz bags for $31.14
I think I have had the plain corn variety of these before. These have some plantain in them as well, although they don't really taste like plantain when formulated into the chip -- it's basically another source of starch. I love all the pictures with suggested toppings although I note that most of mine came broken so I'm not sure how easy that would be to do in practice. If you are looking for something a little different than a plain corn chip or cracker, these would be worth a try.
Tropical Tri3Bar, Almond Butter Dark Chocolate Coconut (1.84 oz) - Buy 6 bars for $17
Here is the first of two bars for the month. With all the fonts and such on the wrapper I am honestly still not sure what the proper brand name is. At any rate, these are pretty well balanced in terms of protein, fat, and fiber, although they have more sugar than I'd like (most of which is added sugar). This isn't quite enough calories for me to be a meal replacement but your mileage may vary. The texture was good -- not too dry and not too sticky or crumbly and it also tasted decent.
HOM Macadamia Bar, Salted Caramel (1.76 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $29.99
Of the two bars, this was my favorite. In fact, when we do those monthly favorites posts for July, I am 99.9% certain this will be my favorite food item for the month. It was delicious. I went to the website to buy more and they are OUT OF STOCK and I am so sad. I probably honestly like this because it tastes like a candy bar. The outer chocolate coating was good too. This one is also fairly well-balanced in terms of protein, fat, and fiber, and it doesn't have sugar (although it does have sugar alcohols, which I'm fine with).
RW Garcia Sweet Potato Crackers (2 oz) - Buy 30 oz for $16.95
These came in Fit Snack Box last month so they aren't new to me, but this is the first time I've seen them in Vegancuts. I like them. They have a wonderful texture and a slight sweet potato flavor that would work well with dips or spreads, although I think they are good enough to stand on their own as well.
Farmhouse Culture Crunchy Kraut Krisps Cabbage Chips, Dill Pickle (1 oz) - Buy 11 oz for $9.99
This is probably the only item of the month that wasn't a hit for us. I split all subscription box snacks with my husband to get a second opinion and neither of us cared for these, but for different reasons. My husband really dislikes dill and it was pretty prominent here. For me, it was the cruciferous vegetable undertaste. I thought it might not be bad because the cabbage was pretty far down the ingredients list, like fourth, and I wouldn't say these tasted like cabbage, specifically, but there was something that was just a bit off for me.
Top Seedz Maple Magic - Buy 6 oz for $7.99
We received some crackers from this brand last month although I like these seeds better. The maple flavor was at just the right level and these had a great texture. For what it's worth, I do typically like seed snacks; I'm not sure how these would appeal to someone who didn't often eat seeds.
Bela Herb Infused Wellness Drink, Elegant Tropical (16 fl oz) - Buy 12 bottles for $35.88
I was prepared not to like this because most "wellness drinks" I have tried taste terrible. But, this was good. I liked that it was 0 calories and it made me think of something you would drink when you wanted juice but not the calories and sugar in juice, if that makes sense. In other words, what it tasted like was fruit juice. I am not sure you're going to get a ton of health benefits from a drink (I am suspicious of anything that says it supports immunity) but it shouldn't hurt and it could be a great choice if you're trying to cut down on sugar.
Plantfusion Complete Protein, Red Velvet Cake (1 serving) - Buy 15 servings for $26.99
Protein powders seem to be showing up frequently in food subscription boxes lately and this brand is one of the most common. As it happens, I have nearly a full tub of another product from this brand. They do fun dessert flavors in addition to the standard vanilla and chocolate and this red velvet tastes exactly like what I would expect from red velvet protein powder (a little chocolate and a lot of sweetness). This went into my morning smoothies over a couple of days as I am not really one to consume protein shakes.
Teapigs Cold Brew Cucumber and Apple Tea (1 bag) - Buy 10 bags for $7.99
This isn't really "tea," exactly. The ingredients are mostly apple pomace, which is essentially the parts left over when you've taken what you want for other industrial purposes. However, it's nice that these parts are used instead of thrown out, and what you end up getting is something like fruit-infused water, but without all the waste. (I never liked doing fruit-infused water because I had to throw out so much fruit after letting it soak for a while.) If you were a fan of fruit-infused water but gave up because it took too much effort or was too expensive, this could be a nice alternative for you.
Verdict: This month’s Vegancuts Snack Box had 12 items for an average value per item of about $2.08. The cabbage chips were really the only miss for us, everything else was good and most of it was also new to me. I was a particular fan of the macadamia bar and hope those come back into stock soon although maybe it's for the best they're not shipping right now because the chocolate outer coating would not do well in Georgia in July/August. The drink was a pleasant surprise and the rice chips were a great new discovery. This was a really good month overall.
