Medusa's Make-Up September 2020 "You Are Beautiful" Review

Along with my beauty items, I received an info card that details what items are in the box. I love how detailed this info card is (compared to some other boxes' info cards)!

The theme this month is "You Are Beautiful" - always a good sentiment to have! We also got an info card about the featured brand this month - Mane Club - along with a discount code to use in their online store.

Let's unpack this box!

Mane Club Cry Baby Repairing Hair Mask - Retail Value $3.00

I spent some time looking through Mane Club's website, and their branding is just so cute! I love the tongue-in-cheek names for all of their products, and the bright, happy colors stand out as unique and fun. I was excited to try this hair mask - it promises to repair damaged hair, reduce breakage, and deeply condition. It had a very light citrus scent that wasn't too overpowering, and it left my hair feeling extra silky and soft after I dried it. I used about 1/3 of the package on my medium-length hair, which felt like plenty of product to thoroughly cover my strands!

Medusa's Make-Up Lipstick in "Red Square" - Retail Value $14.00

The next item is a true cherry-red lipstick. The formula is super creamy and glided on really well, and it gave very full coverage with just one swipe. A staple red lipstick in a flattering shade is always a good thing to have on hand, so I was excited to receive this in my box! It's more of a pink- or orange-toned red, rather than a cooler blue-toned red, which suits my skin tone really well.

Medusa's Make-Up Tropical Matte Eyeshadow in "Bahamas" - Retail Value $11.00 (currently on sale for $3.99)

Next up is a pressed matte eyeshadow in a pure black color. I absolutely love the cute cardboard packaging with the palm fronds - I wish they had been able to incorporate that on the actual product! The eyeshadow is super pigmented and a very true black, which can sometimes be hard to find in eyeshadows. I like to do a lighter eyeshadow look, so this color is something that I will be using for eyeliner, not for all over shadow, but if you wanted to do an intense look this eyeshadow could do that for you! I also think it would work really well for a brow powder for someone with dark eyebrows.

Medusa's Make-Up Disco Queen Extreme Sparkle Lip Gloss in "Last Dance" - Retail Value $11.95

This was my favorite item in the box! Although the tube looks super sparkly and disco-ball like, the actual gloss went on as a very pretty shimmer. I love the neutral pink color that I received, too - it is so wearable and I think would look good on a lot of different skin tones. The gloss wasn't sticky at all, which is always wonderful in a gloss! Also, I can't decide what scent this lip gloss has - possibly vanilla? or cocoa? - but it's AMAZING and I could smell it all day and be happy.

Public Goods Mini Lip Balm, 0.05 oz - Retail Value $1.25

The extra this month is a cute little lip balm! I love this size of lip balm because it's perfect to throw into a purse or a desk drawer and always have handy. The balm has a very light scent, hardly noticeable, and it glides on well. I feel like I got an hour or so of moisture from this balm, which is excellent wear for me.

Here are swatches, from top to bottom of the lipstick, the eyeshadow, and the lip gloss. In the second picture, you can see the sparkle catch the light on the lipgloss!

Here's my makeup look I put together with these products. I first used an all-over eyeshadow color in a golden taupe color, and then I used the black eyeshadow as an eyeliner by dipping a tiny, flat brush into the shadow and then pressing it above my eyeslashes. I then took a fluffier flat brush and gently blended the black out to soften the line of color. I really like using a black or dark eyeshadow as an eyeliner this way, because it's easier to soften the color and make it look more natural than a thick, harsh line of black eyeliner.

I'm also wearing the lip gloss in the photo above - I love this color!

Verdict: I thought that this month's Medusa's Make-Up Beauty Box was a great one! Everything in this box is immediately useable, and I love classic colors like a red lipstick. Even though the dark color of the eyeshadow put me off immediately upon opening it, I really like how versatile the product was and that I could use it in a way that works for me! The retail value for these items comes to $41.20, which is over double the cost of the box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Orders are generally processed within 1-3 business days, so you will likely receive September as your first box if you subscribe before the end of the month.

Value Breakdown: At $18.95 for this box, here's what you're paying for each item:

  • Hair Mask - $1.38
  • Lipstick - $6.60
  • Eyeshadow - $5.18
  • Lip Gloss - $5.63
  • Lip Balm - $0.59

I don’t know how this brand has the gall to claim it is “vegan” when it includes, and promotes, cheap brands that test on animals. I used to be a fan, but these people are total hypocrites who should be reported for their lies and false advertising.

I think you are confusing vegan and cruelty-free. Vegan means it doesn’t contain animal-derived ingredients. Cruelty-free means not tested on animals. A product could be vegan and still be tested on animals and vice versa. As for the cheapness, I guess it depends on whether you like your products made with with parabens and talc, in China. Then again, they aren’t promoting themselves as a natural beauty box either.
