Walmart Limited Edition Halloween Beauty Box October 2020 Review
Here is the info sheet for the items included.
Revlon Colorstay 16 Hour Eyeshadow Quad in Addictive - Retail Value $5.24
This eyeshadow palette contains such neutral, wearable shades that it almost seems out of place with the rest of the box. The colors weren't the most pigmented, and the dark brown matte was slightly patchy, but overall this eyeshadow quad should work for most skin tones and has decent quality for the affordable price.
Sinful Colors Nail Polish in Gogo Girl, 0.5 oz - Retail Value $1.87
When I would paint my nails on my own, I always thought Sinful Colors did a good job of making affordable polishes of a decent quality. I would never wear these without a base and topcoat (the one time I did it was chip city), but this fun red polish works both for Halloween looks as well as for festive Christmas looks, too.
Milani Strobelight Liquid Highlighter in 24k Gold, 12.4 ml - Retail Value $9.99
This highlighter is such a pigmented gold that it is hard to work with – if you’re not using the gold as part of a Halloween costume (more on that below), I recommend using just a drop or two mixed into regular foundation for an added glow that is more wearable for the average makeup look. Using too much of it also meant that it took a long time to dry down, so make sure you start sparingly if you’re going to use it alone.
NYX Shout Loud Satin Lipstick in Red Haute, 0.12 oz - Retail Value $8.50
This lipstick is definitely loud and pigmented. On its own the color was a little much for me, however, I really loved how it looked once I blotted it off my lips. It left behind a really pretty red stain on my lips that was more wearable *and* more durable. Before I blotted it away I thought the lipstick was slightly waxy and sticky in feeling, but I am going to get more wear out of this than I expected by how nice the stain looked (and I got compliments on it, too).
Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelette, 1 ct - Buy 20 singles for $7.49
I’m pretty sure these are the first makeup remover wipes I’ve ever used – I remember stealing my older sister's wipes out of the iconic blue plastic box. They perform well, and while I know it isn't trendy to use makeup wipes these days in the skincare community, I am human and I like having these handy.
Splat Hair Chalk in Midnight Blue, 3.5 grams - Retail Value $8.46
Oof. Oof. Okay, so the good: this is pigmented enough that it did show up on my dark brown hair, which was a feat all on its own. The bad: this got everywhere. I had blue skin, blue hands, blue anything that accidentally touched my hair. This is definitely only for a special effect look because it made my hair look greasy wherever it was applied. I definitely took time to shampoo this out, and I felt like a smurf as I saw the blue water running down my hands. All of the blue dye did rinse away with only one shampoo, so this would work well for a night of Halloween fun without more permanent dye.
Here I am with the Nyx lipstick on and the hair chalk in my hair.
Hard Candy Stroke Of Gorgeous Liquid Eyeliner in Black, 0.014 oz - Retail Value $6
I love the idea that this liquid eyeliner is made with a serum to promote healthy lash growth, but the pigment on this liner is just completely lacking. The felt-tip pen applicator gave me good control, but the lack of pigment makes this a disappointing product.
Here are the products swatched. There are two different eyeliner swatches, and that’s because the second attempt was after giving the eyeliner a good shake with no change in result.
And here is a Halloween look I did using the Milani highlighter in my leopard print.
Verdict: I have mixed feelings about this box – I definitely think the value is there in terms of the retail price of the items, but a lot of the items sent would work only for Halloween (specifically, the Splat chalk and the Milani Highlighter). Perhaps I am not adventurous enough, but I wish the highlighter sent had been slightly more wearable and less costume-y. Overall, though, for under $10 this is a fun box full of Halloween Spirit, and the value for everything except the makeup wipe adds up to $47.55, well over the promised value of $39.
