KiwiCo Kiwi Crate "Coral Reef" Review October 2020

Our theme for this month is Coral Reef and we received this booklet which contains the directions for our activities. This includes detailed, colored illustrations and clear instructions that are easy to follow. They broke down our project into various sections that simplified the process for us. On the back of the booklet, they include their social media links and a sticker for this month’s project. This is actually a project that was reviewed in April 2016, but it looks like they have updated it a bit. I love that this company is always working to improve their already great projects!

This is the little sticker chart we received in our first Kiwi Crate along with our welcome note that we can add our sticker to!

Each month you also get a Kiwi Explore! magazine with a letter from Steve the Kiwi and a little comic to go along with the theme starring some cute characters. This month the gang participated in a beach clean up and we learned about coral and jellyfish and received a fun popcorn reef recipe.

My daughter loved the maze that they included.

Our first step was to color our background using these fun watercolor pastels that they provided. They also included a blending stump for us and gave a lot of great information about using these materials in different ways to create various effects in our coloring.

This month both my son and my daughter completed this box. As long as you have patient kids who don't mind sharing, this worked well with two kids! I had them take turns coloring their background and their jellyfish.

Once their background was colored, they colored in these jellyfish tentacles.

Next, we folded our legs down and then threaded these brightly colored strings through the holes.

Then we added a circular sticker over the top to hold them in place.

Next, we folded a pipe cleaner in half and slipped it through the two holes at the top before adding a plastic bubble through them. Then we twisted the pipe cleaner together at the top to close it up.

We added some googly eyes and our jellyfish were complete.

Cute!

The rest of our project involved putting together these wooden pieces to make our jellyfish racer. We attached the ratchets to the sides of the frame using the spools and screws.

Then we threaded the long blue string through the spool and up through the holes at the top of our frame before tying it to our first jellyfish. We repeated this all for the second jellyfish as well.

Then we added some rubber bands to hold the two longer pieces with teeth together. This slid right down over our ratchet on the side of our frame. As you move the ratchet up and down, the jellyfish gets reeled in.

Our handles were a bit wiggly so we did end up adding these handle helpers and it definitely helped!

Finally, we added our reef scene to the back (which can be flipped to show the other side, too!) and our little racer was ready to go!

Here is a bit of our first race! It was definitely tricky for my 4-year-old to do at first, but my 6-year-old had no trouble with it!

Verdict: This month's Kiwi Crate box was cute and fun! The kids enjoyed making their jellyfish and I liked that I was able to let both of them participate this month since there were two jellyfish to be made! The box was well-organized, the instructions were clear, there was plenty of educational information, and there was also the opportunity for the kids to be creative with a new art tool! Overall, it was a pretty cool box that we enjoyed!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It is possible you might get this crate, but it is not a guarantee. From KiwiCo:

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
