Marshmallow of the Month Club Subscription October 2020 Review
First things first: I am obsessed with this packaging! It is so cute! It's a 4x4 cardstock box with pieces that make it look like a s'more! And they wrapped it in fake web and spiders this month for Halloween. Brilliant. Topping off the pleasant surprises is an info card personalized with my name.
The info card explains the flavor of the month: apple marshmallows made with caramelized sugar and a hint of applewood smoked salt. The card also explains that they sent a mini skewer to roast the marshmallows over the caramel praline scented candle they included for indoor s'mores. (Note: toasting a marshmallow over a scented candle is not something I would recommend nor be comfortable doing, but I'll explain that later.)
Caramel Apple Marshmallows
Starting with, of course, the star of the box! These caramel apple marshmallows are made with a short, easy-to-read, all-natural ingredients list. They're also made with fish gelatin so that they're pescatarian friendly. They have more of a bite/chew to them than typical store-bought marshmallows, but they're still fluffy and airy. The flavor comes through well, too, with the apple cider, caramelized sugar, and applewood smoked sea salt. They're good!
Maple Apple Spiced Graham Crackers
Graham crackers are my fave! I had high expectations for these. I like them, but they didn't wow me. They are really, really crunchy. The flavor is good, but I don't think there's any way these would lend themselves well to s'mores because the marshmallow would smush down too much because the cookies are so hard. But, on their own, they still tasted good.
Mini Skewer
Caramel Praline Tea Light
This is the candle and the skewer the info card mentioned earlier. They're adorable, and the candle smells really good. However, I really don't think it's the best idea for them to suggest toasting a marshmallow over it. Scented candles produce chemical fumes when burned and also soot, and these things would make the marshmallow taste pretty bad because it would absorb all of those concentrated things. Also? Probably not the safest idea. Everything that comes up from searching online says not to. I'll still use the little tea candle on its own, but I'll choose my oven to toast the marshmallows. (If you have a gas stove, just toast marshmallows over a burner! It's one of my favorite things!)
Caramels
These are a tasty extra treat! I'm not generally a huge fan of caramels on their own but these were buttery and smooth and tasted good. My husband liked them, too.
Dillettante Ephemere Dark Chocolate Truffle Cremes - Buy a 10 oz box for $12.57
Oh, my WORD. These chocolate truffles are insane. They're definitely gourmet, and they just totally melt in your mouth. These are delicious and I am actually planning to order a full box as a Christmas present to myself!
Mountain High Premium Hot Chocolate Packet - Buy a 100-packet box for $29.99
I'm happy with another very simple ingredient list! Sugar, milk, cocoa, and salt is how I make my mom's hot chocolate from scratch, so I'm happy with this too. This hot chocolate was more milk chocolate, and not too intense or dark, but it was a tasty warm-up drink.
Okay, so they said to make s'mores with the box contents, so I had to try it! I used the broiler in my oven to make these. The chocolate was super melty and the marshmallows definitely toasted! These were really messy (I was right about the crackers being too hard for the perfect s'more) but they were tasty. This time I preferred the items as they were, straight out of the packages, but it was still delicious either way.
The Verdict: I actually had packages of gourmet marshmallows as favors at my wedding and I really loved those, so I knew I had to grab this subscription! My first month was a pure delight to open. Everything was a fantastic treat, and the chocolates were incredible (I have more in my cart as we speak). The simple and natural ingredients were really appreciated, and the packaging really impressed me, too. I can't wait to see future boxes!
To Wrap Up:
Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, if you order now your next box should be their November box!
Value Breakdown: Because the marshmallows and graham crackers are homemade just for this subscription, it's hard to really nail down a specific value that you get out of this box. If you're looking specifically at just "how many marshmallows, graham crackers, and hot cocoa packets can I get for $25?" then this box probably falls short. But what I'm really getting out of this box is the fun and uniqueness of the artisan marshmallows, homemade graham crackers (which are also different flavors month to month), the quality of the ingredients, and the overall experience, too. This was a delight in the mail, and I can especially see it being a cute gift to send to someone.
