Allure Beauty Box January 2021 Review

This handy booklet has all the product info inside.

L’Occitane Immortelle Reset Serum, 5 mL – Estimated Value $9.83 (buy a full size 30 mL for $59.00)

FYI: Subscribers will either receive this serum OR L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Cream

I absolutely loved this serum. First, the little yellow blobs floating inside remind me of boba tea! Which makes me smile. I know that isn't skincare related, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Anyway, those little orbs hold nourishing oils from Immortelle which is a Mediterranean flower from the daisy family known for holding its cheery yellow color even when dried. There is also meadowfoam seed oil in here which is a wonderful smoother and full of antioxidants and vitamin E. Another strong selling point for me here was the texture. If you aren't into serums because they make your face feel filmy, this one might convince you. It feels like a light gel when you apply but absorbs in a snap, leaving nothing but hydration behind. This serum does have added fragrance, but, heck, it smells great and scent is one of the things I will happily overlook if it's a good one.

ManiMe Gift Voucher - Retail Value $30.00

This was the thing I was most excited about this month! I absolutely loved the nail stickers Allure sent us back in 2020. And ManiMe is super customizable which is ideal when you have sad little nails that lack surface area. This voucher has enough to cover both a set of stickers and shipping! I also noted that a bottle of clear topcoat was automatically added to my order. Allure teamed up with ManiMe to curate a selection of 5 designs for us to choose from:

I ended up selecting the Enigma set because it reminded me of a drunk Mondrian painting and I feel like that might be my 2021 aesthetic. Checkout was seamless and easy, and there was no need for me to add any payment info, which was a plus. ManiMe is unique because they actually use images of your nails to custom fit your stickers. The included voucher has a credit card-sized area for you to use to take pictures of your nails. I had to take pictures of both my left and right fingers and both thumbs. It was made extra easy because a link was sent to my phone allowing me to snap the pictures and upload them immediately, without needing to send pictures back and forth. Once these arrive and I have a chance to try them, I will update the review!

What design are you choosing?

ADDED 1/20:

My kit has arrived! It included a file/buffer, top coat, 15 stickers, and instructions.

I was impressed wth these because they lasted on my nails for a week even with working out (aka weight lifting). I only had to replace one pinkie sticker because I absentmindedly peeled it off. Totally my fault. I am also happy to report that my nails showed ZERO damage when I peeled all of these off too. I am a convert!

True & Lucious Super Moisture Lipstick in 'Vintage Rose', 0.12 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $22.00

I am also always a fan of a full-size lipstick! This dirty pink should be universally flattering and the formula felt so light I wasn't sure it had great coverage until I peeked in the mirror. This is one of the lighter feeling lipsticks I have in my collection but the color payoff is stellar. It also looks quite different depending on the light, which is why I included an arm swatch in cooler light and also a shot of my face in the ultra-flattering warm morning sun.

Pretty!

I am also wearing the blush below in this shot.

The Beauty Crop Blush Duo in 'Mauve-ulous', 3 g - Full Size! Retail Value $10.00

Blush is one of those things that I really love, even though I am naturally quite reddish. For some reason, the allure of hiding my natural redness in order to replace it with a perfect pink placed exactly where I want it has always been super appealing to me. I also have really embraced cream blush lately paired with a mid-coverage BB or CC cream and highlighter because it creates this very natural lazy gal look I am enjoying. These two shades are on the cooler side and while the cream is flat, the powder has a subtle shimmer.

Top is the cream, bottom is the powder.

BaseBlue Cosmetics Airsponge - Retail Value $6.00

Our last item is a wee little beauty sponge. I actually prefer these tiny sizes to the larger sponges because they are great for applying powder highlighter if you get them a little damp. It creates a great glow and the smaller size helps me not to overdo it. Left to my own devices I would glow like the sun.

Verdict: This Allure box has a total value of around $105.83 which is nice for a $23 box. I think the highlight for me was the ManiMe voucher which, alone, more than covered the cost of the whole box. I am so excited to try them out and update the review! I also absolutely loved the boba serum and the lipstick and blush. The peel was ok, but not ideal for me. It should make a great gift! This was one of the better Allure boxes in the last few months and I am excited to see how the rest of 2021 unfolds.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I didn’t sub in January, though I did sign up this month, but I did look up Maniology when the spoilers were coming out. Since then, I’ve been getting tons of Maniology ads on Facebook for their stamping kits with promos like pay shipping only. One really caught my eye, a really cool “book” themed plate with stacks of books and other things. I ended up grabbing it, and they offered some promos on top so I got a mystery stamping set as well. I wish I hadn’t passed on the 6 mystery plates for $19 promo.

So for $14 I got two stamping plates (book + mystery,) a stamper/scraper set, one full size mystery polish, and a three polish mini set. They arrived a few days ago and are pretty cool, though I haven’t yet actually used them. I need to watch some tutorials first. The three polish set is black/white and a clear top coat. The mystery polish is Anthurium, a gorgeous shimmery fuschia. The mystery plate is OK – a lot of generic designs/patterns I wouldn’t have picked out myself, but I could see being nice for a manicure. The “marble” pattern, especially, I can see myself using a lot.

The plates also look to be really nice quality – they aren’t just thin metal sheets, but also mounted on some sort of hard silicon backing to keep them from getting bent.

They’d also sent the book kit in a little drawstring bag, so I was able to bundle everything up in that.

Anybody actually get their nail stickers or get a shipping notification yet? I got a delay email but that I would get a shipping notification within 10 business days of order. Today, is business day 11. Just curious….

I did get mine but they were a disappointment. I followed the directions exactly, and even added two coats of the sealer that came with the stickers. They looked good and were easy to put on unfortunately I lost two of the stickers without even noticing and two more within two days. The edges of the stickers continually caught in my hair, I ended up removing them all within 3-4 days. I did contact customer service which replied after 3 days with a link to the instructions on how to put them on (eye roll). I would never recommend these at a cost of $25.

I finally got a shipment link. They should be here midweek. I wasn’t super excited with any of the choices. I have very low expectations 😬

I tried the lipstick from this the other day for the first time and thought the color was ah-mazing!

Was anyone able to order the ManiMe without putting in their credit card number? It’s a zero balance and I really don’t want to enter it.

I won’t put my info in either, what a joke these nail stickers are, I can’t even use them and then what was left in the box was sh*t. I can not believe they charge $23 for this kind of box, I literally cancelled, which they dnt make easy, you have to email them and tell them you want to unsubscribe which is ridiculous compared to all the other beauty boxes. I didn’t even get the serum, so the only nice thing was the lipstick..so disappointed, for $2 more I went to boxycharm and that box is well worth it, I dnt even knw how allure survives against boxycharm..

I was able to skip the credit card. After applying the code and getting the zero balance, I hit submit without entering my credit card and it went through.

I was so underwhelmed that I skipped this box- and got it anyway. I was told when I was skipping that I’d get a month extension- only to be informed last week that Allure does not extend and they gave me a credit of $14 and change. So here I am to complain about my free box. I have short stubby nails that I should polish more- so the nail card goes to my younger sister who not only has fabulous nails but recently achieved 4 years of sobriety! She also works with mentally challenged adults and has worked like a dog since the Pandemic began. I think she deserves it, don’t you? And- as I expected- the lipstick (which looks so divine on Megan) is an ugly warm nude on pale cool me, so a dear friend who wears warms well will receive it after I sterlize it. The blush duo is a nice shade- but how do I get a powder brush in that small compact without covering the creme component in powder crumbs? Should be fun to try. Wish I had one of those tiny brushes that came in the Clinique blush compacts when I worked for them in the 90s.L’Occitane is usually too fragrant for me, but I guess that’s why God gave me dry feet. I can only pray my 61 year old fingers are nimble enough to do something useful with that teeny weeny sponge in the extremely hard to open package, At least the price was right (ha ha). Pardon my chattiness- my Bruins just won in a shootut and I haven’t settled down yet.

Congrats to your sister!
When I skipped (I skipped December and January so far) Allure never said anything about refunds. And I didn’t see any credit. what is their policy, if there is one at this point? I wouldn’t mind getting refunded…

I was underwhelmed by this box. The value just didn’t seem to be there.

Not getting one of the items until you send for it did not help.

has anyone tried buying nail polishes on ManiMe? I don’t want the stickers, none on their entire website.
after the Military, I like clean short nails (& hair in a bun, still follow all military grooming standards, just won’t wear a uniform anymore).

It was surprising to know this ManiMe was founded by 2 Harvard students, We have some Harvard & Stanford students like the 2 women who came up with the subscription beauty boxes idea, and then we have ManiMe.

Reply ButtonReply

rosh

Ok, I tried.
you cannot purchase anything with the gift card other than the nail stickers, and have to choose from those 5 designs. you cannot even use 20% first-time promo code. and all 5 designs are $25. so you cannot buy anything more than 1 set of nail stickers with the gift card. if you want to purchase other designs along with allure designs and pay for them, you won’t be able to use 20% off promo offer…. so no way to save even that $3 shipping charge for other designs.

good luck ladies!
I am giving it to someone else. I am so pissed off that I want to rip off this gift card and throw it in the trash. It will be only my loss if I do so, so later I will think about how I can make something better out of this.

one product I was excited to try was loccitane cream, but disappointed there too, I got the serum! .Now my 2021 resolution is to use all the serums & lip products I have received in my beauty boxes since Nov 2020 BEFORE they expire. I am skipping the Feb box, definitely not worth my $25 (w/ taxes).

I got the 3-month allure subscription, and my next box will be my last unless they reduce the price or amp up the game.

Just received my box. So much better than December. I really like Saturday Skin products so looking forward to trying this one. I ordered the nail color right away. I was able to select Enigma. They added a top coat as a bonus. I like that there were no extra charges so it was $0. I still had to put in a credit card which I did not like. I tried the lipstick out right away which wasn’t smart as my lipped need a good scrubbing. At least the color looks nice on me.
Megan, the blush looks so pretty on you. I wasn’t even going to try it since it looked so dark but I like how it looks on you. This month was full of winners.

Jody

I just got my box and went for the nails immediately. So sad the Enigma was out of stock and couldn’t be selected. I didn’t want to chance waiting in case more disappear. I took the pastel bolts for the runner up. I hope they look better in person.
Megan, do you know if you can redeem more than one coupon per person?

Just got my box and I love it! I am gonna order my nail stickers ASAP. First thing I had to dig into was the lipstick because I got a True & Luscious face palette in my Boxycharm recently and I was beyond impressed with it (lol and I am hard to impress)…and like the palette the lipstick is AMAZING. I am really excited about this brand and hope they expand with more products cause they are doing something right.
I also really like the L’Occitane face cream. It makes me feel super bougie.

This review is making me want the box after all. My last box was in September and I just haven’t been into them again until seeing this.

Reply ButtonReply

Cat

This review made me more excited for the blush!! And I’d have never thought about using the little sponge for highlighter, I will consider doing this!!

Reply ButtonReply

Jenny

SO glad I skipped – allergic to lavender, have enough “normal” shades of lipstick and blush… And the ManiMe credit ONLY works on their selected designs? That’s such a bummer!

Getting excited from the February Allure spoilers though!

Seems like a great box. Great review as usual. And an update on my box that I mentioned in the past review, my December box is still sitting at the main post office 2 miles from my house since December 14th!!

Reply ButtonReply

Mandi

I called Allure after my December box hadn’t arrived. They sent me a new box saying it was probably lost in the mail. Their customer service has always been great. I would reach out to Allure about your December box.

@Megan: Could you please do a separate review for the ManiMe? The one with the step by step review. Thank you!

Sure thing Inge! I will be part of this review, but I will make it a little mini piece with details! 🙂

Your skin looks gorgeous, Megan!

Thank you Lori! I take photos in a really flattering window, haha!

I hope the choices are not picked over on the nail stickers since it seems I get my box as close to the end of the month as possible without being the next month! Okay, got that out of the way. I really do hate to complain but signing up for the year even tho I did get a great deal was not my best idea. Enjoy the nails, Happy New to everyone.. Hope it’s a better one..😊

So agree my box now has been arriving very late.

Hi Megan, great review as always! Does ManiMe voucher have expiration date? I am asking because I temporary moved and Allure box is being shipped to my home…

Hey Kay! It expires 3/31/21.

“I ended up selecting the Enigma set because it reminded me of a drunk Mondrian painting and I feel like that might be my 2021 aesthetic.”

One of your best remarks ever! 😆

Wish it was more clear in the previews how the nail sticker voucher worked. I thought it was just a gift card to their store. The designs are cute.
The rest of the box is still a no for me though, so glad I skipped.
Hope they do nail stickers again in the future
The lipstick color looks way different than what I expected from their previews. Wish they’d be more color accurate, same thing happened with the nail polish before

Same when it showed the front of the card but as with a lot of boxes, literal is subjective lol

I just called Allure and they said if you sign up now you will be getting the January box. The tag at the top of the billing page is incorrect about getting the February box first.

Reply ButtonReply

Cassandra

Skipped the last two boxes and am super excited about the nail stickers! The lipstick looks so much better than expected. Would like to know how to get your lazy look you mentioned!

Reply ButtonReply

Charlotte

I didn’t get this box because I knew I wouldn’t be able to use the Saturday Skin product (boo, denatured alcohol), but I think this is a really nice curation. Probably the first box since the price increase that I think is actually worth $23.

Reply ButtonReply

Jody

So bummed that the Saturday Skin has lavender oil. I was looking forward to that product. I can’t decide which nails to get. I can’t tell from photos if any of the “naked” nail will be showing? I don’t want that look. My box needs to get here so I can decide.

Reply ButtonReply

Cat

Yeah, me too about the oil. I hope my skin doesn’t react poorly to it but makes me less excited 🙁

Reply ButtonReply

Rose

Love this box! Your review made me even more excited.

The lipstick looks lovely and might actually look okay with my warm olive skin. The blush also looks pretty but the last blush they sent in 2020 will probably last me a gazillion or so years. I’ll pass this one along to my mom. The stickers are headed to my 11 year old niece.

I barely have to buy any makeup throughout the year and my skincare cost has gone down. I can now use what I love and pass along the rest. I’ve found some amazing gems throughout the last year of subscribing. The bonus cream in my December box was INCREDIBLE for my skin and I splurged on more samples from Ebay. I would have never known that and I feel like I’ve learned a lot from these boxes. It’s been like a crash course for what works for my skin and coloring plus all the stuff.

Megan K.

I have pretty neutral skin (though I lean a little cooler in the winter) and I think this color is a great shade for anyone because its not too warm and not too cold either! Hope you love it. 🙂
