BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the medium size, which is recommended for dogs 20-50 lbs. We recently changed the size because Tucker, our Standard Poodle, is the most playful pup in the house when it comes to toys.

FYI: Two of my dogs are quite old! Piper (the minpin) has to eat soft food and has trouble with hard treats. Charlie is a pug and a glutton who will eat LITERALLY anything. They both still really enjoy toys, though it has been years since either of them managed to destroy anything.

If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

December 2020 BarkBox "Barkbox x Peanuts" Review

The details behind our items this month were printed inside, on the box lining.

The December box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.

Sometimes, these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Marcie's Chicken JerkyTreats, 4 oz

I was a little worried that since both bags were jerky (which is typically tough and hard) that neither of the little seniors would get to enjoy treats this month. Of course, the Barkbox team had me covered. These are actually super soft and you can break them into smaller pieces very easily. Both of my toothless ancient beasts had no trouble chewing (gumming?) these and they loved the flavor.

Two little big fans here.

Sally's Turkey Jerky Treats, 4 oz

These were a little tougher than the chicken ones, but still pretty soft. Tucker is a bigger guy so I let him have a whole treat at once!

Sorry, I just love his tiny little teeth.

Skating Snoopy Toy - Retail Value $10.00

In addition to my dogs obsessing over anything with crinkle, this toy arrived with a loud squeaker and furry ears! Piper loves furry fabrics. It kind of grosses me out because she will just chew it until it's soaked, but, hey, whatever sparks joy. The crinkle filled hat was the biggest draw with this Snoopy, and the little ball on the end drove everyone crazy in the best way.

Seriously, it was low-key terrifying.

Look at this lunge!

Piper ended up the victor and took her Snoopy back to her favorite end of the couch.

Deck the Halls Woodstock Toy - Retail Value $10.00

This toy was a little larger and had a squeaker inside that was more of a deep almost piggy sort of sound. Tucker had the jaw strength to make it squeak and he loved it! There was also a nice bit of crinkle inside, much to everyone's delight.

Tucker seemed really intent on gently nibbling the wreath.

While Charlie loved the furry parts!

(A note on Charles: he is starting to lose mobility in his back legs. His vet is well aware, we have a plan, and he doesn't seem to notice or be in any discomfort. Just a heads up if you notice his back legs in any of these images and are worried. I know many of you love him almost as much as I do!)

Turkey Stick Chew

Of course, the end is always Tucker's favorite! We actually didn't even get home before he gobbled this treat up in the backseat of my car. Luckily I have a stash of these so next time I am pulling an all-nighter and my wingman needs a snack, I have him covered.

Verdict: BarkBox was charming, as usual. I am not even a huge Snoopy fan but I loved this box. The design of the toys will please fans of this classic and their durability and creativity will keep your pups long entertained. I just love Barkbox so much because it makes my old pups play, and if you have older dogs, you know how absolutely wonderful it feels to see them animated and running around like little pups again!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first theme will be the January box!

Value Breakdown: At $35/month + free shipping for this box, each of the 5 items has an average cost of $7.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Thanks for sharing the box. I loved seeing your pups enjoy their new treasures. I just lost my senior companion to cancer December 30 2020. He looked just like your pug Charlie. My pug was named Chandler and his brother (well not his true brother but rescued/adopted) was Maxwell (He also passed to cancer but at the age of 11 back in May 2017). Its amazing that they can be toothless but can manage to still snack on just about anything. My boy Chandler still wanted bones. He liked to lick/gum them. It didn’t matter that he didn’t have teeth. He liked the flavor. I would just replace them about once a week so the flavor was strong and fresh. He enjoyed bones more then regular dog treats. He also loved vegetables and fruit. I just had to watch his carbohydrate count because he was diabetic since he was 8 years old. I just love to watch pugs play with their toys. They are little comedians and want all of our attention. Both of my Pugs always knew how to make me laugh and lift my spirit. That is one of the things I will miss most about both of those dogs. I have never had any another animal to date that had that ability.

I will I be getting a Golden retriever puppy soon. Would the super chewer version of this box be the best version to go with? Or is there a better dog subscription box out there for the money? I have never tried any pet boxes yet. Both of my pugs were not into toys when they were seniors. Once they got past 5 they didn’t play with anything. So I don’t know much about pet subscription boxes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has any first hand knowledge of pet insurance that would be great too. I was denied with my last two pugs. But there is no pre existing conditions with this puppy or the parents. Even the parents is genetically tested. I did some research on my own, but I keep coming up with very mixed reviews. So if people have first hand experience (good or bad) I would like to know before signing up with a terrible insurance company and getting stuck somewhere that keeps denying my claims for petty reasons.

Thanks

Hi Elisabeth! Sarah here from the BarkBox team! Thank you so much for your interest in choosing BarkBox to spoil your new puppy. We are so excited for the opportunity help create a memorable experience for you and your pup each month! Our Super Chewer boxes do cost more than our Classic BarkBox, but these toys are made with chewers in mind. The toys range from all natural rubber to solid nylon with no fluff. However, if the Super Chewer box is not the best fit and your pup prefers soft, plush toys, we do offer our classic boxes for extra small, small, medium, and large pups. We also have our Scout’s Honor guarantee in which we promise to replace any item that is destroyed too quickly, or just isn’t a perfect fit for any reason. In addition to Scout’s Honor, we will work with you to find the best plan to suit your pup’s needs and preferences.

We truly hope you and your new pup are happy with the subscription, but please feel free to reach out to our team directly if there is ever anything we can do for you and your pack! If you do reach out, we just ask that you mention you were referred from the My Subscription Addiction website!

Emmy

I switched my box to no treats and I also let them know that they sent a toy that was too big in the last box. Sadly this box included the same two toys and then another toy that was too big. I should have just stayed with the treats. Actually I ended up canceling, they have Bark Box toys for sale at Target.

Sarah

Hi Emmy! Sarah here from the BarkBox team! We are so sorry to hear that your pup received duplicate items and a few toys that are too big. As a pup parent myself, I completely understand the frustration this has caused as we only want the best for our dogs!

We would love the opportunity to look into your account and make this right for you and your pack. If you’d like to take us up on this offer, we just ask that you send our team a message through chat, email, or text and mention you were referred through My Subscription Addiction and we’d be happy to find a solution!
