Beachly is a quarterly seasonal box for men or women, stocked with beach-themed apparel, accessories, and lifestyle items so you can feel close to the ocean even if you're landlocked, snowed-in, or quarantined.

Each box costs $99 but will have a value of over $180 featuring 4-5 items from well-known brands like Aloha, Havaianas, Roxy, Billabong, Nixon, DIFF Eyewear, and more. Beachly also offers an annual subscription at $340 + shipping (saving you a total of $56 for the year).

This is a review of their men's box.

Beachly Winter 2020 Review

Complete box contents

While I did not experience the sign-up process, Beachly tailors subscriber boxes to your size preferences and the season. Which explains my cold (or, at least, mild) weather gear as opposed to swim trunks and tanks. The latter of which wouldn't do me much good during an NYC Nor'easter, anyway.

T-Shirt

Roark Tropical Pocket Tee – Listed Value $39.00

The "Beachy-est" item of the box is a tropical-themed, off-white pocket tee. It's very comfortable thanks to the organic cotton fabric. Roark considers itself "a revival of bold adventurism and storytelling." But I'm more interested in the fact it's grown free of pesticides to reduce environmental impact.

Perfect for an afternoon lounging in a lawn chair on the sand. Or within the confines of an NYC apartment. I'm a fan of the coral colorway and print. It's an especially nice change of pace from my mostly earth-toned t-shirt collection. I've also moved almost exclusively in the direction of a pocket tee. It's the perfect place to store your sunglasses en route to the beach.

Full-zip windbreaker

Imperial Motion Full-Zip "Ghost Reflective" Windbreaker – Estimated Value $99.00 (based on similar item)

This windbreaker is my favorite item in the box and very versatile. I don't typically pair windbreakers and the beach but that's because I'm only ever willing to make the trip when it's 80+ degrees and ultra-sunny. I'd feel otherwise if I had the pleasure to enjoy a sunrise or sunset along the water. Fortunately, I can think of plenty of other uses.

Don't be fooled by the "subtle" all-black look thanks to the brand's "Ghost Reflective" technology. One snap of your camera flash will uncover an all-over reflective pattern that completely changes the look. Try it. It's pretty cool.

Perfect for my daily East Village walk or an evening run. The jacket features breathable, perforated paneling, water-resistant coating, and a durable micro ripstop. It may not mean much to most but I also really like the feel of the elastic waist and arm bands. There is plenty of pocket space to hold your belongings and the pullover hood is a nice touch. It's a great layered piece and one I'll get plenty of use out of.

Imperial Motion Polar Fleece Pullover Sweatshirt  – Listed Value $74.95

The third apparel piece is this gray/black pullover fleece sweatshirt. It may be the least obvious pick for a beach-themed box but it is very cozy. And while I appreciate the comfort and warmth, I'll also be honest in saying it's not my favorite piece from a style perspective.

Fleece pullover - on-model

If I want a fleece piece these days, I want pile fleece. It's definitely cozy thanks to the premium micro polar fleece but the color paneling is a bit plain for my taste. There is one feature I can't knock: the kangaroo pouch. I LOVE a good kangaroo pouch. You never know what you may need to store. And I can guarantee you this pouch has room for it.

Richer Poorer The Everyday Crew Sock – Estimated Value $14.00 (based on similar items)

I like that Beachly didn't stop with the apparel pieces and included a sock as well. It's a fairly plain crew sock with a woven palm tree graphic on the back calf. A subtle look with just enough personality for my taste. I also found the gold back tab to be a unique, fun twist.

Much like all other included items, these are really soft and can be worn anywhere and everywhere. I'm a fan and would be interested in other similarly-designed sock options from the brand.

Freesurf Magazine

Rounding out the box's contents is an issue of Freesurf Magazine, purported to be "Hawaii's Surf Magazine." It includes a series of amazing action imagery and other surf-themed information including athlete profiles and product reviews. If surfing is your sport, this is absolutely an issue for you. It makes for a great coffee table read and almost inspires me to grab a wetsuit, board, and hit the waves. Almost.

Verdict: It can't be easy creating a beach experience in the dead of winter. Let alone while the majority of us are stuck at home. Beachly's quarterly subscription dares to do the impossible – and largely succeeds. While I'm sure all these pieces can be utilized on the sand, I can confidently say they're a useful addition to my quarantined city life. I'll be at least adding the windbreaker and socks to my regular rotation. The other apparel pieces will have their moment. And I enjoyed learning more about the sport of surfing with an interesting and illustrative read. This box isn't cheap – especially if you commit to the full-year. But these are all quality items and, once added up, definitely equate to a great value. I estimated a value of $226.95. If you're not necessarily about that beach life I may recommend looking elsewhere – or at least sticking to a single season (or two). But if you live near the shoreline, enjoy surfing, or simply love relaxing under the sun then this Beachly subscription box may be the perfect, convenient addition.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  Yes, but these sell out quickly!

Welcome to MSA, Ariel. So great to see a new face and a new perspective. The black jacket is really cool with it’s refection. I find it odd that the entire box was clothing. An accessory or something else would have made this box seem more well rounded.

Enjoyed the review.

Great review!! I’ve been wondering whats in the men’s box. I get the women’s, but I think my hubby would love this!

This is a much better box than their women’s boxes that include beauty items, loud all over floral prints, jewelry with inflated values and cheap home items like small candles or to-go cups that can’t be dishwashed. I wish they took the same approach to curating their women’s boxes.

Exactly my thought.

I agree too. This is much more appealing than what they’ve put in the women’s boxes in the past year.

Although I don’t really get the pocket tee with the unprinted pocket sewn OVER the printed design. Is that a new style? It looks sort of like a mistake, especially since it looks like you can see the design through the white pocket, but maybe I’m just not in touch with the latest trends.

Beachly, there are a lot of women who would prefer their boxes were similar to the men’s box. I would much rather have quality clothing than the beauty items and home items. I hope you are listening!

Alice

Agree. The men’s box is so much better, with quality clothing. Love solid colors, too, instead of garish prints.

I agree that I would also love to see a women’s box more like this. Quality clothing items with real value. Nice review!

I was expected the Women’s box, may want to change heading to say: Beachly Lifestyle Men’s Box Review + Coupon – Winter 2020

And welcome Ariel.

What a great review and welcome Ariel! Go Cubs! Anyway, to me the immediate reaction from the photo of the stuff was “all clothing???” As a man, what non-clothing items would you appreciate from a sub like this as useful to you? Not the “sit on a shelf” variety of stuff, but items that actually serve a function. Would love to get the male perspective here. Thank you!

Ariel

Go Cubs Go, Dea! Thanks for your feedback. Yes, to your point I do think non-apparel items for a beach-themed box make a ton of sense. Flip-flops, sunglasses, bucket hat. Those are just a few related, on-trend items that would be helpful (as would the return of Summer!).

That is one cool windbreaker. I think they should have brought in different colors for the clothing. I mean it’s a beach box! I was at a sporting goods store this week and neon colors were were back on trend in the clothing.
