Book of the Month January 2021 Review

These are the five book choices offered to subscribers this month. I have a few of these on my TBR list because they sounded so good!

The Dating Plan by Sara Desai - Retail Value $16.00 (found here on paperback for $14.40)

This month, I'm not ashamed to say I was drawn in by a pretty cover! Isn't it just so gorgeous? It looks like this is a pre-release, too which always makes this subscription feel a bit more valuable to me.

Book Summary from Amazon:

Daisy Patel is a software engineer who understands lists and logic better than bosses and boyfriends. With her life all planned out, and no interest in love, the one thing she can't give her family is the marriage they expect. Left with few options, she asks her childhood crush to be her decoy fiancé.

Liam Murphy is a venture capitalist with something to prove. When he learns that his inheritance is contingent on being married, he realizes his best friend's little sister has the perfect solution to his problem. A marriage of convenience will get Daisy's matchmaking relatives off her back and fulfill the terms of his late grandfather's will. If only he hadn’t broken her tender teenage heart nine years ago…

Sparks fly when Daisy and Liam go on a series of dates to legitimize their fake relationship. Too late, they realize that very little is convenient about their arrangement. History and chemistry aren't about to follow the rules of this engagement.

I anticipated a very traditional love story with this book, but the characters were just a bit more complex than I expected and the author's use of alternating perspectives really added to the storyline for me. I enjoyed the mix of cultures with Daisy's meddling aunties and Liam's boisterous Irish side which created some fringe characters with a lot of different personalities, all of whom were important to the story in some way. As for the main characters, I enjoyed smart, confident Daisy who didn't play the typical damsel role, and Liam, although certainly a bit cockier than I prefer my leading men, had a good heart but both had their own insecurities relating to their familial relationships.

While I hated how down on herself Daisy was, I can certainly remember some of the insecurities that come with being young and single, and to Daisy's credit, a lot of it had to do with her absent mother. Liam is just as hard on himself but seems to have more to prove and is much more stubborn and hard-headed about it. These two self-deprecating individuals don't realize how much they have always meant to one another and it's sad how one mistake from their past has gotten in the way of a relationship and friendship that could have meant a lot to both of them through the past ten years. As they enter their fake arrangement, it's fun to watch them work it all out with the romantic undercurrent and one can only hope for a happy ending for these two.

In addition to the sweetness of the romance, this author did not shy away from including some pretty graphic and intimate scenes. While I enjoy a little steaminess, I tend to think less is more so the details were a bit much for me. I could have done without such vivid descriptions, but this only accounted for a few short scenes so it didn't take away from the story for me, rather I just felt this much detail about that aspect of their relationship wasn't necessary. This is definitely a personal opinion though!

Each month, Book of the Month includes a bookmark.

When you become a BOTM BFF (which means you have received a year of books), you get some perks, one of which is that you get to select one of the five Book of the Year Finalists for free once the winner is announced. This was as easy as going into my account and adding it to my box. Isn't that a great perk?

The Girl With the Louding Voice by Abi Dare – Retail Value $26.00 (found here for $23.39)

My choice is one that I am excited to read! It's been on my TBR list and it seems to be highly regarded. I took a course in college – I believe it was called Literature of the Third World –and we read several novels that were similar in premise to this one, some of which still stand out in my mind. That class provided such a great perspective on other cultures and I'm hopeful this book will be no different!

From Amazon:

The unforgettable, inspiring story of a teenage girl growing up in a rural Nigerian village who longs to get an education so that she can find her “louding voice” and speak up for herself, The Girl with the Louding Voice is a simultaneously heartbreaking and triumphant tale about the power of fighting for your dreams.  Despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her path, Adunni never loses sight of her goal of escaping the life of poverty she was born into so that she can build the future she chooses for herself – and help other girls like her do the same.  Her spirited determination to find joy and hope in even the most difficult circumstances imaginable will “break your heart and then put it back together again” (Jenna Bush Hager on The Today Show) even as Adunni shows us how one courageous young girl can inspire us all to reach for our dreams…and maybe even change the world.

Verdict: I enjoyed my pick, The Dating Plan, from Book of the Month and I found it to be an easy read that I was able to finish in a couple of days. It ended up being more complex than I thought it would be and the focus on family and self were themes that really added to the story for me. If I were to give this a BOTM rating (Loved, Liked, Disliked) this would be a solid "Liked." As for BOTM itself, this subscription is pretty great and I loved that I got to pick one of the BOTY finalists for free to add to my box this month.

Hello Nicole,

I am an avid reader and a known book hoarder. I have about 10 unread books at all times. Sometimes more. 😕 I do Book of the Month and I love it! There is just something about the feel of a real book in your hands that’s intoxicating.

This year, with the pandemic and the need to cut down on expenses , I signed up for my local library so I could read e- books. While this has been a great way to read while saving money, I still cherish the time I have reading actual books- usually which come from Book of the Month.

I love Book of the Month for the great deal I get on purchasing 3 books, since each additional book , up to two, is $10- this is an amazing deal.

I always therefore purchase 3 at a time. What I love about Book of the Month is that I can easily skip any months I want, and the credit remains in my account.

As for hoarding- I usually pass on any book I read to another avid book lover. The exception is any book that really wowed me- I try to limit this to ten a year. By passing it on, I feel like I’m “recycling” the book and giving it a new loving home. I make sure to always tell the person I pass it on to, to please just give it to another book lover when they are done!

Thank you, Brittany! My first instinct is always to keep every book I read like trophies on my shelf. But I have been getting better about passing along books with the exception of books that I found amazing, same as you. For e-books, I have even purchased hard copies of books I really loved when I read them in e-book format.

I like the idea of thinking of it as recycling a book when it’s being passed along.

Thank you so much for sharing!

Love these ideas, Brittany! I also love the feel of a book in hand and it has just never felt right trying to read a Kindle in the bath! 🙂

Thank you so much for your review, Brandi! I have this audiobook on my Libby waitlist currently. While I don’t have too many qualms about sex scenes in books, I definitely appreciate you including your comments on the content because I will know not to listen to it in the car with the kids!

I have a question for you regarding how you manage your books. I have been a hardcore book hoarder my entire life and an avid reader. A few years ago I switched to kindle because I didn’t have any space for more books (and my beauty and the beast library still lives in my fantasies). I’ve also been using audiobooks from my library app during COVID times when I am home with the kiddos.

My question is: How do you manage your books with a book subscription? Do you tend to keep them? Pass them along? Donate? I’m curious because I would love to subscribe to BOTM but am hesitant due to the previously mentioned tendency toward hoarding 🙂

Also open to hearing how everyone else handles their books subs in this way!

Thanks in advance and thank you for the great review!

There are websites where you can trade books.

There are Facebook groups where you can sell your BOTMs! (Or buy the ones you missed). Media mail shipping is cheap, like $3, and people usually sell for $10-12 so it’s about $7+ you get back and clear up shelf space.

Hi Nicole,
Definitely don’t listen around your kids! lol. As for the books, that’s a great question and it looks like Luna and Brittany had some helpful responses! For me personally, if it was something I enjoyed but wouldn’t necessarily read again, I pass it along to one of my sisters or to a friend. If it’s a book that I don’t think they would be interested in, then I usually donate it. For those that I want to keep, I find ways to be creative in my storage like stacking them on top of others, or doing two rows on a shelf for chapter books. Since I have begun reviewing, I have certainly had to invest in a few more bookshelves since I review children’s books, young adult, and adult books (Target has a $35 shelf that works pretty well!), but I have always been a lover of books, so I am happy to have them all around. The Beauty and the Beast library is definitely a dream I share! 🙂

Thanks, Brandi, for your response! I also love to have books everywhere. I incorporate them into my decor as well. Always pleased to meet fellow bookworms and learn how they problem solve these dilemmas 😂

Luna

I don’t sub to any book subscriptions, but whenever I finish a book that I don’t give away to a friend or family member, I usually put them in a lending library stand (there are a few in my neighborhood)… or put them in the coffee room at my work when I go into the office once per month. 🙂

Thank you for your response, Luna! I actually just stumbled upon a Little Lending Library in my area on a walk yesterday. That’s a great idea!

Brandi D.

Hmm, wonder if there is a lending library nearby! Great idea, Luna! 🙂
