Premium Gentleman's Box "The Rise & Grind Edition" Winter 2020 Review
We did also receive a few promotional coupon codes this month from LXR and Co, Cigarclub, and Sip & Savor (check out Megan's review here).
Our theme for this quarter is "The Rise & Grind Edition" and usually this booklet is filled with information about the box items, but this time there is a QR code at the end to scan which takes you to their website where you can find the information.
Manscaped Lawn Mower 2.0
Let's start with what I would consider our "hero" item, this personal grooming device. It looks like we received an older version that I was unable to locate online, but they do have a newer version 3.0 available now that retails for $79.99. It looks like there is quite a difference between the two models according to this, so I think the value of our 2.0 would be a bit less. Now, let's get into the actual device!
This little device is sleek and small, comes with two different blade attachments for a total of 4 different lengths, along with a little brush for cleaning and a cord and cube for charging. Once charged, it should operate for about 60 minutes and it is waterproof so you can even use this in the shower. It has a ceramic blade that operates with a 6000 RPM motor and it has a guard along with SkinSafe blades that are hygienic and won't irritate your skin. The blades are also refillable. So how did this little guy perform? I sent my husband to test it out and he reported that it was quiet with sharp blades that didn't pull and it was much easier than using a regular razor. He likes that it is small and easy to handle and that it packs up nicely for travel. Overall, he was really pleased with the device and how well it worked.
Capsiva Pain Relieving Gel, 3 oz - Retail Value $19.99
The other item that goes with the "rise" aspect of the box is this pain-relieving gel. It doesn't fit quite as seamlessly with the theme as the other items do, but considering my husband wakes up with neck pain every so often, I think it works. This is a natural gel made from capsaicin which is found in chili peppers and causes that burning sensation, although this formula manages to eliminate the burning sensation and instead blocks the pain and reduces inflammation! It's non-steroidal and applies smoothly with no sticky residue, although my husband wasn't a fan of the scent. This will be nice to have on hand and hopefully will help the next time he is sore!
Blue Sail Coffee Anchor Blend, 12 oz - Retail Value $12.49
My husband and I start our day with coffee each morning so the "grind" part of the theme is one we both appreciated. This 12 oz bag of coffee is roasted in Arkansas with beans that come from Brazil. The roast level is espresso and the flavor profile they describe are dark chocolate, molasses, and maple syrup. There were no recommended serving sizes or anything on the bag, so the first time I brewed a cup of this, I made it much too weak, but even then I could get those notes very faintly. Next time, I'm going to try it with my french press since they recommend it under their "pairs well with" section.
Sous Shop Electric Coffee Grinder
Our current electric coffee grinder is a small, older one that we inherited from my husband's parents and it works okay, so my husband and I were both happy to have a replacement. This one seems to have a larger capacity, works quickly, and grinds the beans more evenly. I wasn't able to find this model online and could only find manual grinders, which I actually find myself wishing we had received because in doing my research, it seems that manual grinders are actually a preferred method of grinding. Who knew?
This coffee grinder is easy to operate: simply put in your beans, replace the lid, plug it in, and press the button down until you reach the desired grind consistency. I thought it did a nice job of grinding our new beans and I do love the smell of freshly ground coffee!
Forest Coffee Trading Co. Mugs
The last item in our box was a set of double wall insulated glass mugs. They look really cool and almost feel like plastic even though they are made from high borosilicate glass. They hold just under 12 ounces and are dishwasher safe. They are lightweight and the double-wall works well to keep your drinks warm without burning your hands or cold without leaving condensation on the outside. I think they are nice looking glasses, but they come from Forest Coffee Trading Co. which doesn't actually have these listed on their site so I'm really not sure how to value them. Similar mugs I found online cost anywhere from $15 to about $25 for two.
Here is my accidentally weak cup of coffee in the new glass.
Verdict: While typically a lot of the items in the Premium Gentleman’s Box are suitable for anyone, this quarter's box definitely had more of a manly vibe with the "Manscaping" tool. Nonetheless, I was excited about the coffee and grinder which I knew my husband would be sharing with me and the mugs are nice and unique with the double-walled insulation. I liked how they tied everything together with the "Rise & Grind" theme but this may not have been an ideal box for everyone. Luckily my husband is easy to please and loves coffee so he appreciated the curation of this box and I do think that there were a lot of items that could easily be gifted if they weren't quite right for you.
While we liked this box, the cost recently had a pretty steep increase from $100 to $119 (with free shipping) and at $119, I think that my husband would have been just as happy picking out his own coffee grinder, coffee, and mugs, so I'm not so sure the value is there for us. Additionally, this box promises a value of over $200 and since the Capsiva and coffee cost a total of $32.48, that means the value of the Lawn Mower, glasses, and coffee grinder would have to be at least $167 to meet that. Even if we were generous and valued the Lawn Mower at the cost of the new model ($79.99) that means our glasses and grinder would have to be worth $96 total and I don't think they are worth anywhere near that.
