Love With Food Deluxe December 2020 Box Review
The box usually comes with a generic card but there was no card this month. It was also super late although subscribers received an email around the usual shipping time stating that they were having trouble getting the box out on time due to COVID-19.
There was a card with a wine offer, though:
On to the items:
Belgian Boys Mini Cookie Stash Cookie Butter Cookies (1 oz) – Buy 20 Boxes for $20.00
This brand pops up in Love With Food pretty often, and are all dessert-type items, usually, they are cookies or a stroopwafel. These are crunchy (but not hard) butter cookies and they don’t usually get smashed up too badly during shipping. We have definitely received this exact item several times before, though -- most recently in October 2020.
Appleways Cheddar Cheese Whole Wheat Crackers (0.9 oz) – Buy 108 Bags for $47.99
I really thought I had had these before but I couldn’t find them in any of my old reviews so I guess not. Anyway, I believe Appleways is a food service-type brand that caters to cafeterias, offices, and such, which is probably why you have to get 108 individual servings if you want to buy them. But, these are good. I try to eat only whole grains as it really helps keep my triglycerides down, and the cheese flavor is good. Also, I appreciate the lack of artificial colors.
Crunchsters Barbeque (1.3 oz) – Buy 6 Bags for $9.99
I have had these in a previous Love with Food box (most recently September 2020) but I don’t mind getting them again. They are mostly sprouted mung beans but they are not too hard. I suggest pouring into a small bowl and eating with a spoon as the pieces are just super tiny; this is not really finger food. In general, I like salty, BBQ flavored snacks, and these were no exception.
Janis and Melanie Brownie Cookie (1 oz) - Buy 8 Cookies for $5.80
Janis and Melanie snacks show up in this box every now and then (we received this same item in July 2020). It is soft (yay) and the chocolate flavor is great. I thought it was just a little dry but that it would be great with ice cream. The last time we got this it prompted me to go to the Janis and Melanie site and order a bunch of tea cookies and cheese straws and I may go do that again soon.
The Good Bean Sea Salt Chickpeas (0.75 oz) – Buy 18 oz for $14.25
These have a decent texture for crunchy chickpeas (in case you were wondering, there’s such a thing as TOO CRUNCHY, and that’s when they’re so hard you’re worried you’ll chip a tooth, but these are not like that). Sea salt is kind of boring as a flavor, though. I would like to try these in a different flavor, maybe something with a little spice. (This is a multiple-time repeat item, most recently from July 2020.)
Hubs Home Cooked Salted Virginia Peanuts (1 oz) - Buy 80 oz for $54.99
I really thought this was a repeat item but I couldn’t find it among my past reviews. Anyway, we do eat nuts at my house fairly regularly so we were happy to try these. They’re salty but not overly so. The main thing stopping me from buying them again is the fact that you have to get 80 ounces at a time, which seems like it would make finding pantry space pretty difficult.
Love, Corn Habanero Chilli (0.7 oz) - Buy 24 Bags for $19.99
We have received this same product from this box several times, most recently in August 2020. Although I like the idea of this, it is probably not something I would go out and buy. The heat is not too bad for me, even though this is made with habaneros. But the corn kernels are super hard, which my teeth don’t always like, and there is a bit of an undertaste that I can’t quite put my finger on — not a bad undertaste, but a strange one.
Sunrype Fruit to Go Apple Wildberry Fruit Strip (0.5 oz) - Estimated Value $19.99 for 55
We have received other flavors of this product before, but not this particular one. This one is currently out of stock everywhere I looked so I’ve linked to a general Amazon page and estimated the value based on other flavors. There’s usually a bit of kid food in this box and I think this qualifies. It certainly would have appealed to me when I was a kid. It’s not too sticky and is generically fruity (I don’t know what “wildberry” is…) and not bad if you’re into this kind of thing.
Appleways Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bar (1.2 oz) - Buy 160 for $101.90
This is another food service item – I’m not sure who could eat 160 of these before they went bad, but a cafeteria would be just the place for them. Anyway, this is pretty much what you would expect from the name and from looking at the photo. You can definitely tell there are oats by both the flavor and the texture. Also, I like it when Love with Food sends chocolate in cold weather as it doesn’t get all melty (that’s not their strong point – they happily send chocolate in August as well).
Chocolate Chip Brownie Brittle (0.6 oz) - Buy 6, 5 oz Bags for $23.99
I could’ve sworn we’d received this before but it looks like we’ve gotten other flavors (salted caramel, dark chocolate). So I guess this is new for me. I have to admit I do not understand the motivation behind brownie brittle because I was never a fan of edge brownies – I always went straight for the center. To me, this is sort of like eating little chocolate crackers, which I suppose is not altogether bad. If you like edge brownies you will probably be a bigger fan.
Thinsters Chocolate Chip Cookie Thins (0.6 oz) – Buy 6, 4 oz Bags for $21.88
Here is another repeat item, this time most recently from August 2020. Although I am not normally a huge fan of hard, packaged cookies, these are thin enough that they have a rather satisfying texture to chew. Also, they taste strongly of butter (I approve). I wonder if these come in other flavors? Not that I don’t like these, but I just want to see what other possibilities are out there. (Although the butter flavor goes particularly well with chocolate chip.)
Zee Zee’s Campfire Smores Soft Baked Bar (1.3 oz) - Buy 24 for $26.99
We originally got these in September 2020. Zee Zee’s items show up a lot in Love with Food but most of them are actually pretty good, even if they are marketed as kids’ food (which I am normally not into). The marshmallow bits here are just flavored that way and are not actual marshmallows, which is great, because that makes this item vegetarian (“real” marshmallows have gelatin). I think I have preferred some of the other Zee Zee’s bars a little more but this was not bad. Just don’t eat a whole bunch in one sitting because one serving has 14 grams of sugar! Think of these like cookies and enjoy in moderation.
Skinny Jimmy Beauty Protein Bar, White Chocolate Berry Bliss (0.74 oz) - Buy 24 for $24.99
This was a new item but I wasn’t able to try it because it contains collagen, which is not vegetarian. (It actually has pea protein as well as collagen, which is an odd combination.) Anyway, my husband tried this. He said that first off, it is not greasy like some other collagen bars he’s tried, and he prefers it that way. He also said the grittiness from the pea protein was noticeable. He did not have any complaints about the flavor.
Ocean’s Halo Seaweed Snacks, Maui Onion (0.14 oz) – Buy 12 for $9.99
We received these in October 2020. I will never complain about this item, personally, because it is something I buy several cases at a time and eat every day for lunch. This specific flavor and brand, in fact. I decided at some point that I needed to eat more iodine and this was a way to do it, and my thyroid hormone levels went from the low end of normal more to the middle of the range, so I guess it’s working. Anyway, I know not everyone loves seaweed, but I think this brand does a good job of hiding the seaweed flavor.
Country Archer Grass-Fed Original Beef Stick (1 oz) – Retail Value $1.99
There have been a lot of meat sticks in this box lately. I suppose it makes sense, due to the popularity of the keto diet. We have received a mini of this one recently but I think this is the first time we’ve received the full size. I am saving up meat sticks to send to a relative who will appreciate them (normally I give these away in the office but I haven’t been to my office since March 2020…). One nice thing about this brand is they actually specify that it’s made from grass-fed beef. That sort of information can be hard to find for other brands but I know that is a feature that some people look for.
Verdict: There were 15 items in the December 2020 Love With Food Deluxe Box for an average value of about $1.33 per item. I have mixed feelings about the December Love with Food box. As you will notice, there are quite a few repeat items from earlier this year (although there were a few new items as well). I kind of sympathize with them, because mail and shipping services were so backed up (have to get the products to your warehouse before you can send them on to your subscribers) and due to COVID-19 rates spiking, a lot of localities implemented public health measures that prevented lots of people from working together in warehouses and fulfillment centers. They did send out a notification that the box would be late, which I appreciated. I am a little worried they will just get farther behind, however – their web store is curiously empty of products and everything in the Rewards Pantry is sold out at the moment, and this is a decline that’s been going on for a little while. I have certainly discovered some things in Love with Food that I have bought again and again (the seaweed from above, Crio-Bru cacao drinks, Beanitos Mac and Cheese crunch) and I still have hope that this box will improve in the coming months.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You’d receive January's box as your first box, but check the Love With Food shop if this box appeals to you, as sometimes past boxes will show up there.
