Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2020/2021 Review
When you sign up you will answer a series of questions such as your ethnicity, hair color, skin concerns, and a few other preferences. The answers are used to provide a more personalized experience so that they can tailor your box to you.
As part of Walmart's strategy to "revamp" their box this past summer, they have started including a pamphlet featuring all of the items that could be included in the box with a short summary, prices for full-size items, and photos. Each box contains 6 of the items featured within and points out that box assortments will vary.
Bio Oil Dry Skin Gel - Estimated Value $0.75 (Buy a 1.7 oz. container for $5.99)
In all honesty, I dislike foil samples. I find them messy and they either contain too much product, so I end up wasting half of it, or not enough to finish the job. I found it interesting to read that unlike most lotions, this gel is made from only 3% water to protect the moisture level in your skin. It says it helps heal flaky and cracked skin and guarantees improvement of the top layer of skin. Did it work? It's hard to say. With such a small sample, I decided to use this on my elbows, as they tend to get really dry in the winter. I found the formula thin and greasy, with a strong essential oil smell. It sort of reminded me of a mix between Vaseline and mentholatum, but in a thinner consistency. It did seem to help moisturize my elbows, but boy were my hands greasy after applying! While I wouldn't want to add this to my morning routine because of the messiness, I'd really be interested to see how effective it is against flip-flop-induced cracked heels paired with socks at night. Has anyone used this for that purpose?
Cetaphil Deep Hydration Healthy Glow Daily Face Cream- Estimated Value $3.39 (Buy a 1.7 oz. container for $16.97)
Now, this kind of sample is more like it! I grew up using Cetaphil products, as I struggled with severe acne when I was younger. The cleanser was always helpful, but I haven't tried this particular moisturizer, so I was pretty excited to give this daily cream a go. I found this cream to be lightweight, non-greasy, and quickly absorbed. I used it before I put on my makeup in the morning and had great results. My skin really did feel softer and more moisturized in just a couple of treatments. This particular product is clinically tested on sensitive skin and is dermatologist recommended, stating it won't clog pores. For me, this product worked really well, and has tempted me into buying the full-size version!
No7 Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex - Estimated Value $3.49 (Buy a 1 oz. container for $34.98)
As I am heading towards my mid-30s I am always on the lookout for "preventative maintenance" type products but have always purchased smaller versions because they tend to be spendy. I have not tried this particular brand in the past, so I was all about giving it a whirl. I found this medium consistency retinol to be comfortable to apply and a great match for my combination skin. Previously I have tried retinols that felt like they were almost burning my skin, but this felt extra gentle. Because the directions say it takes 2-12 weeks to notice results, I can't say if this worked to "transform" my skin, but after 3 applications I honestly can say my skin feels softer and brighter. Does anyone routinely use this?
Vital Proteins Strawberry Lemon Beauty Collagen - Estimated Value $2.42 (Buy a 14 stick box for $34.00)
If you guys read my review of the Walmart Limited Edition "Eye Love Being Home" Winter Box, you would know I am not the biggest fan of collagen powders. I mentioned before that they kind of creep me out and I just couldn't down the powder mixed with a glass of water. That all changed after I read the comments some lovely ladies left, suggesting to add it in my morning smoothie... talk about a game-changer! The strawberry lemon flavor only enhanced my strawberry smoothie, and while I can't vouch for results yet, I am all about skin, nail, hair, and joint support, so I might just have to add this to my grocery list for my daily routine!
NYX Butter Gloss in Sorbet- Full Size! $4.97
Interestingly enough, this item wasn't listed in this quarter's pamphlet, and it was the exact same gloss, in the exact same color as I received in the Walmart Beauty Fall 2020 box. What a bummer as it was the only full-sized item in the box! The formula was fine, the scent was lovely, and the color did enhance my natural lip color, but honestly, I didn't need another tube of it so soon! Mask-wearing has basically shut down my lip color game, and I would have much rather received a new item instead of a repeat. Did anyone else receive this again?
Milani Highly Rated Mascara 0.16 oz - Estimated Value $3.89 (Buy a 0.41 oz. version for $9.99)
My last item was this Milani mascara. Featuring a sleek black container sprinkled with gold stars. I am loving the outer look of this mascara, but how did it wear? First of all, I am in love with the thick bristles, and how close together they are on the wand. I am an avid user of Too Faced mascaras, and that is partially why I like this type of wand so much. I found the formula to be non-clumpy, volumunous, and to have really great staying power. I didn't feel this worked to create lash length as much as it did volume, so it won't be taking the place of my Too Faced mascara, but it was a pretty good contender! An interesting note though: I couldn't find this on the Walmart website, so it might just be available in stores?
Here are the products in use... The night before, I applied the retinol serum, then a morning dose of the Cetaphil lotion before applying my make-up. The mascara added a nice amount of volume to my lashes, while the gloss added the perfect amount of tint to my lips.
Verdict: Out with the fall and in with the winter - this Walmart box was a fair mix of skincare and make-up items, but disappointingly contained a repeat from the previous box. I was happy to try out the Cetaphil Healthy Glow Cream and No7 Retinol but wished we would have received a resealable sample of the Bio-Oil skin gel. I was impressed with the variety of brands selected this month, and was happy to discover some new favorites, but would have liked to see another full-sized item.
The total value of this quarter's box came out to be about $18.91, and we did get to try a few more expensive brands, so I think for the $5 cost of shipping, this was a fair price to pay to try new items from varying brands.
