Our January 2021 Review

NewBeauty TestTube is one of my favorite subs because they send really unique and new items, many of which I have never even heard of! Usually, this subscription arrives with a very informative booklet, but it looks like they have gone digital.

Now, on to the items!

Christophe Robin Cleansing Mask With Lemon, 8.33 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $49.00

This is a brand I absolutely adore, so I am glad it has been popping up in my boxes lately, usually in full-size glory! As someone who isn't really that into hair products, I do have a handful of brands I love but still won't spend the money on, mostly because I am always buying a lipstick or highlighter I really don't need instead. Honestly, I shouldn't be allowed to ever buy beauty products at this point! But, hey, here we are. And this product is very, very cool. I was initially worried it would be like a sweet, dessert-like lemon scent, but instead, this wonderful goo smells much more like a tart juicy lemon plucked from a sunny tree. It has a heavy texture that still somehow feels whipped, and even my thick hair doesn't need a lot of this product to get the job done. I scooped out some from the pot and began working it through my hair, starting at the scalp. The directions say to leave on for 20 minutes and I ALMOST got through that time (I used it to shave my legs), but my water started to get cold and I got scared. Then I started to gently rinse it out. I was pleased that it didn't make my ends feel dry but still left my hair feeling really clean and extra shiny. This will be a once a week treat for me!

Éminence Organic Skin Care Monoi Age Corrective Night Cream For Face & Neck, 15 mL - Estimated Value $17.00 (buy a full size 60 mL for $68.00)

Éminence is a brand I am familiar with because they carry it at the fancy spa inside my gym. I have had one facial with their products and I liked the textures, scents, and results very much. I actually considered this line for my studio but ended up going with a different one, but it was a really hard choice! I liked this line because it is very much a botanical/plant-focused treatment line, which was very important to me. Inside this cream is a plethora of delightful extracts, including everything from lemon, to jasmine, to calendula, plums, apples, yams, and so much more. It's like a little produce section for your face, to be honest! Paired with all of those yummies are nourishing ingredients like jojoba, argan oil, and shea. There is a little bit of coconut oil in here which can be pore-clogging, but it is really far down that ingredient list and coconut oil does bring other really great benefits, but just be aware of that if your skin has been congested. Oh! And this formula also contains lactic acid, one of my favorite ingredients for gentle overnight exfoliation and smoothing. This formula does leave my face a little bit greasy feeling, but since it is a night cream, I really don't mind. I am also a big fan of the floral scent.

Grande Cosmetics Grandepop Plumping Liquid Blush in 'Mauvesicle', 1o mL - Full Size! Retail Value $25.00

I am a cream blush enthusiast, but this one fell a little flat for me. I am really pale and this color barely showed up on my face! Granted, I am also naturally pink on a good day and ruddy on a bad one, but the payoff here was pretty lackluster. I also didn't notice much of a plumping effect where I applied it, but I have a pretty full face so maybe my cheeks are already plump enough? I think I would have really enjoyed this in a darker shade. It is easy to apply with the oversized doe-foot applicator and blends very easily. It does have a tightening effect for about the first 15 minutes of wear, which probably means it was "plumping", I just couldn't see a difference myself. What do you all think?

Here is what it looks like swatched on my arm.

And here it is blended in. Kind of hard to see.

Here is my face before (no makeup but recently moisturized). I was having a good pink day and not a bad red day.

Here is what it looked like after application...

And here it is blended in! I mean, it is pretty... but it doesn't feel like enough.

Dr Dennis Gross Stress Rescue Super Serum, 15 mL - Estimated Value $37.00 (buy a full size 30 mL for $74.00)

I really wanted to like this serum, but there was something I just didn't love and I can't quite place my finger on it. I used it for about 4 days and just didn't notice enough of a difference to feel like I loved it. I also thought the scent was a little pepperminty in a way I didn't enjoy, though there is no peppermint inside. It also has some good stuff inside like niacinamide, loads of botanical extracts, mushrooms, and lactic acid. I could honestly do without the inclusion of Ethylhexyl Palmitate but I know it isn't irritating to everyone. I don't know why but I just feel very ho-hum about this serum. Am I off base?

Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Micropoint for Dark Spots, 6 patches - Retail Value $12.99

I absolutely adore Hero Cosmetics acne patches. I actually keep a massive stash of them in my treatment room to give to my clients who might be experiencing some extra aggressive acne spots and I use them myself on the larger maskne bumps that pop up along my jaw ever so often. While I don't really struggle from dark spots, even I am not immune to the extra pigment that is left behind after an especially bad zit or cluster of bumps. While mine tend to appear redder than anything, a patch like this is a great treatment for helping those areas recover and return back to their normal pigment level, especially if you struggle with hyperpigmentation! Each sticker patch has 173 dissolving micro points that are infused with ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, trehalose, vitamin C, and glycolic acid, all of which work together to fade discoloration while still keeping the skin moisturized and conditioned. I applied one on the remains of an especially nasty bump right on my jaw and since these are decently see-through, I can totally see the skin looks less red than it was after a few hours. You can leave these on for up to 6 hours and use a patch every 2-3 days. Make sure your skin is extra clean, or they won't stick!

Youtheory Immune+ Daily Wellness Supplements, 60 capsules - Retail Value $32.49

I just started regularly taking a multi-vitamin this year (it seemed like a very easy resolution to keep, especially since they taste like candy) but I really don't know a ton about vitamins. I also never seem to notice a difference in how I feel when I take supplements, so I just assume they are doing their thing! This supplement is mushroom-focused and contains extracts from 6 different types. I mean, I like mushrooms, so, I am in. There is also zinc inside, baker's yeast, and vitamins C and D. I think they are a pretty normal vitamin size (I don't have trouble swallowing them) and I like that the capsules are vegan.

John Masters Organics Hawaiian Lip Calm - Retail Value $16.00 (each tube retails for $8.00)

I thought this scent would be a lot more tropical than it was, which was a plus for me. I am not crazy about "beach" smells but this balm has nice notes of passionfruit, papaya, and guava that are sweet but very natural. I found this to be a pretty standard feeling balm but thought it was more effective in terms of hydration than your average tube of chapstick.

111Skin Rose Gold Illuminating Eye Mask, 1 pair - Retail Value $15.00

My final item was a set of rose gold eye masks from 111Skin. While I don't love this brand (I find the pricing so high that it feels ridiculous) I have always liked their masks and gels. They feel great on my skin and add instant firmness. My undereye can always use a little extra boost, and I enjoyed these after letting them chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes. BLISS.

Verdict:  NewBeauty TestTube is always an adventurous assortment. I love that it casts a wide net across all sorts of beauty products, never stopping with just makeup and skincare. It feels experimental and well rounded, and unlike any of my other subscriptions but in the best way. I enjoyed this tube a lot! My favorite items were totally the Christophe Robin hair mask (which also covered more than the cost of the entire box!), the Hero micro points, and the Éminence cream. I think I would have loved the blush in a different color, too. While I can't speak to the effectiveness of the vitamins, I liked adding these to my rotation since I seem to have a thing for vitamins this year. All in all, I love this subscription and I think it is a great choice for anyone who wants to try new and different products at a great price for what you get. This month the value totaled $204.48!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! But these do often sell-out!

Value Breakdown: At $38.90 for this box, here is what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Christophe Robin Mask $9.32

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Has anyone been able to log into their account on the website? I have been locked out for months and know I have an account. When I reach out to the team they keep saying it is being worked on.

Same situation as yours. No solution from TT for months.

Spoilers are up if you google it. We are getting the deluxe version of the U Beauty Resurfacing Compound. I guess this makes me feel slightly better about not buying a second February allure box.

Annette

The new spoilers are up on their website!! Not too bad!!

JoJoB

Has anyone else been charged yet for the March Test Tube? I still haven’t been charged and according to the website it should have happened around the week of February 10th.

Jojo,

We apologize for any confusion! The March TestTube is actually scheduled to billed on the 6th.

Hi Jojo,

The next testtube is scheduled to be billed on 3/10.
If there is anything we can do for you, please don’t hesitate to let us know!

Kate,

We set a high standard for ourselves, and we’re so sorry to hear this was not met in your interaction with our business. We would like another opportunity to talk and investigate this further for you. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us!

Kate

You could get your website working properly, every time I try to log in it says my account doesn’t exist but somehow you manage to keep charging my card. I have emailed you 3 times about this issue with no response. At this point I’m hoping that the card you have on file is the one that got stolen so you can’t charge me again without answering me first.

Annette

NO SPOILERS FOR THE NEXT TUBE YET??? I think it should be shipping end of month, right?

Hi Annette,

Thank you for your patience! Our website will be updated with spoilers prior to the billing date 3/10 🙂

I was wondering the same. What’s going on with TestTube? Website is not working properly for 2 months already

I emailed TestTube months ago regarding issues with logging into my account. They responded that they are working on it but nothing has changed since then. I do not feel comfortable having my CC info on the account that I can not access.

MK

It’s so frustrating… I have reached out multiple times to correct my log in, so I can access my account, but still nothing. I don’t know why they wait so long before they release spoilers. If somebody wants to cancel, it gives them very little time to do so before they bill us (maybe that’s the point). I love receiving this tube and I have been loyal for while now, but I would love to see them get their act together!

Yolanda

I’m naturally pink too Megan 😁🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 Lol I like it hahahahahahaha.

I just wanted to say that supplements/multivitamins are amazing in general. I started taking daily vitamins a little over 3 years ago and I haven’t had the flu or even a cold in all that time. I used to get sick constantly but not anymore!

Reply ButtonReply

TestTube

That’s great Milena 🙂

I confess, I’m a little confused about what the Christophe Robin actually is. The fact that you have to leave it on made me think it was a clarifying shampoo, but I’ve also seen it referred to as an option for co-washing? I have it in my FFF add-on cart, but I’m waffling on it. I need a shampoo that’s sulfate free but still tough enough to remove build-up, as I only wash my hair once a week. Is this a good candidate?

Reply ButtonReply

Mountaineer95

I hope this helps…I wash mine two or three times a week max, and use a lot of dry shampoo in between. So when I wash it, it can be tough to really get a lather. I’ve added this as a kind of pre-wash/co-wash I guess I’d say? I use this first, adding some water here and there as it says. But I don’t do a mask-style wait of 20 minutes. After a few minutes I do add my other shampoo (purple anti-brass) but this Christophe product will work fine on its own. It lathers and cleans quite well IMO. And it’s a good sized tub. It’s my favorite item from this month’s box. I would repurchase when it runs out.

Reply ButtonReply

Carol

20 minute hair mask! After leaving my co-wash on for a few minutes, I can barely stand another 5 minutes for my Living Proof mask lol.

I almost picked up that blush when it was on sale at Ulta, but I am glad that I didn’t. Bummer about the pigment.

You’re not supposed to stand in the shower for 20 minutes, you’re supposed to wet your hair in your sink, put it on and sit around outside your shower for 20 minutes. I find that annoying, especially when my hair is longer.

Reply ButtonReply

Melissa

This could have very well just been a placebo effect, but I had been battling a cold that went on for weeks. I saw that the supplements were supposed to help with immunity. I took them for a couple nights and felt much better! I need to remember to take them every day to continue to build immunity, but the price is high, and I don’t want to run out of them!

Reply ButtonReply

JoJoB

Tricia and Melissa, I don’t know if you noticed this but you are supposed to take a MINIMUM of 3 of these a day. So 150 is not quite a 2 month supply. Also, I totally agree with you, I LOVE THEM! I am sorry I tried them because they make a noticeable difference for me and they are so expensive. Of course I say they are too expensive while I sit here with a subscription to 11 different boxes…maybe I need a priority check! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

Haha, I totally relate to the last part

Tricia

Melissa,

Costco carries the youtheory Immune+ Daily Wellness, 150 Vegetarian Capsules for $29.99!

Thank you for the intel, Tricia. I appreciate it. 🙂 Wow, 150 capsules! That is way more affordable.

Excellent, thought provoking review, Megan! You bring up so many valid points and really delve into each product. I can tell you put a lot of thought into your reviews.

The hair mask, hands down, sounds lovely. However I don’t think I could spend 20 minutes in the shower without coming out looking like a California raisin.

For me personally, I like my serums to have a specific purpose. A “stress rescue super serum” leaves me scratching my head.

The plumping blush sounds gimmicky, but then again it seems like a lot of grande products do some sort plumping (if it were only that simple!)

I’ve heard enough negative about 111skin that I’m probably going to skip next month’s Allure.

Thanks again for a great review and read!

@Stephanie
Paula’s choice vitamin c serum has erased a dark spot I had, but you have to be consistent and use it every day.
Also I use skinceuticals ce ferulic. Every other day.

You’re not supposed to stand in the shower for 20 minutes. You do it all outside of the shower until it’s time to rinse it out. I haven’t done it for years as I find it annoying.

I’ve come to the conclusion that there are no products that actually prevent aging, although it is clearly obvious if someone does take care of their skin. I’ve been vigilant in looking after my skin all of my life, and at 55, I get compliments on my skin, but there’s no doubt that everything underneath is sagging.
Because of subscription boxes, I get very high quality skincare for much less than I have had to pay in the past (and I’ve paid through the nose for regimens from brands like La Mer and Le Metier de Beaute).
I enjoy the gimmicky products, but I take their claims with a grain of salt.

Reply ButtonReply

Errmmm

@Stephanie, Glycolic Acid masks and peels have turned back time for my skin – I wish we could post photos here because I have before and after pictures that would blow your mind. No one who sees them believes the photos haven’t been doctored (they haven’t). Glycolic Acid is my HG, I know some folks can’t tolerate it but luckily mine does.

But in reality Botox and Fillers (I’ve had both and don’t think people should feel ashamed to admit to it) are what will get MAJOR results as far as anti-aging. The botox makes your wrinkles leave your forehead and the filler fills in lines and undereyes to bring a well-rested, refreshed appearance. Sad to say but those two products are the real anti-aging magic beans.

Stephanie

I also agree with you Rose. I don’t think there’s any products that prevent aging. I’m also going to go a step further and say that I don’t believe any of the claims that these products help with sun spots, fine lines etc. I’m in my late forties and have never had a skincare regimen except using moisturizer in the am. And I have exceptionally great skin. Sure I have a few wrinkles around my eyes and I do have a couple sun spots on my cheeks but in the 2 years that I became addicted to beauty sub boxes (and now have serious am/pm routines b/c I have so much stuff), I have never noticed a difference in my skin. My wrinkles are no less and my couple of sun spots are still there.

Snow

Brooke, I definitely see your point. My skin is in better condition than it was 10 years ago as well (thank you tretinoin, thank you spironolactone, plus a bunch of other stuff.) But intrinsic ageing happens no matter what. Our face structure (bone) literally starts to deteriorate as we get older and no skin care regimen will change that unfortunately.

Brooke

I agree but also disagree. Aging is going to happen but if you ask my dad, husband and sister they would say I look younger now than 10 years ago. I have been taking excellent care of my skin for 5 years now. Masking several times a week sign different masks. Never going out in the sun without sunscreen and my serum evening skincare routine is several products. I rarely a miss a night and I can tell a HUGE difference. I will never get rid of these dark circles. That is one think I have never ever found something to get rid of but as far as complexion I am one exhausted momma that works full time and gets up all Hours of the night with a better complexion than I had in my twenties and no sagging or neck wrinkles which is something that runs very strongly in our family. I love the subscription boxes and natural retionals are a favorite of mine.

Snow

I am in total agreement with you. I’m turning 40 this year and I am super religious with my skincare routine, but ageing happens no matter what. It’s kind of depressing especially considering the high amount of pressure out there to always look young. I appreciate those who embrace ageing with grace and don’t try to hide it with a bunch of Botox. That’s why I like this site so much; it’s real people just like us and nobody is hiding behind filters, lighting effects, and other sneaky things ☺️

Meriska

I loved this tube! I generally have enjoyed all of them. Unfortunately I only got one lip balm, but I think that may be right. That’s how its advertised on their website. I received the plumping blush in “cinnamon sugar”. I have not used it, but it is definitely darker (almost a brick color). I really enjoyed the Christophe Robin hair scrub/mask. A little goes a long way – I’ve hardly made a dent in mine. I always have “mighty patch” on hand – but with this one… I didn’t see any results unfortunately.

I haven’t gotten to try Eminence yet, but every so often the brand pops up on Zulily and I run my greedy little eyes all over the products.

I love that description!

Prettypony

I hated that blush. It burned my face and it made my cheeks feel so greasy. I really liked the Dr. Gross serum. It did have a very odd smell. To me it smelled like unscented moringa oil. I did not notice less red on my face nor did I have irritation. I did look to buy the full size of it, but the price is a draw back. It is really expensive and did not wow me enough to spend that much. <3

Leticia

I recommend you go to a website like mercari to buy the Dennis gross serum for much less than retail

For those that are considering this box at some point and are turned off by the price the Black Friday annual deal worked out to $25.34 per box including shipping and tax. The box is a good value if you’re looking for mostly skincare with some hair and makeup too, but of course no box is for everyone.

Reply ButtonReply

Liz

I passed on that deal and have been low key regretting it. Do you know if it’s an annual deal they do? Hoping it wasn’t a one-off.

Reply ButtonReply

Pilar

It’s their Cyber Monday deal not Black Friday, and it’s usually 25%–30% off

Joan

Liz, I seem to recall them running if not the same, a similar deal the prior Black Friday. I assume they’ll do it again this year. But I have to say, their VIP boxes that they sell every 2-3 months are even better. They cost more (the one for April started with promo price of $111), but the box for February had a value of over $700. You just don’t have any idea of what you’ll receive, so it’s a gamble, but I’ve not been disappointed yet.

Colleen

I just use the eminence on my neck and not my face.
That’s one mistake that I made was not paying attention to my neck as much as my face.
I only got one lip balm, as well.
I actually like the blush look. Doesn’t look like makeup.I got a different shade, I will try it out tomorrow.

Reply ButtonReply

Colleen

I got the tiramisu shade blush, and I love it. Very natural and easily blendable.

Reply ButtonReply

Jackie

I agree about the Ethylhexyl Palmitate in the Dr Gross serum. Ethylhexyl Palmitate is comedogenic and causes irritation. Maybe others are lucky using it without issue, but I wouldn’t risk it personally.

Congrats on the studio!! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Kristin

Megan you opened your own studio, congrats! So do tell what brand did you decide to feature in your shop?

Reply ButtonReply

Jody

Megan I wanted to love the Dr. Gross serum but I do not. I started it last week and from the first time it was just not good. Bummer.
I really enjoyed the lemon hair cleanse. Yum.
I only got one lip balm. Not two.
The Eminence is probably too much for my oily face. Maybe I will try on legs?
I feel like the vitamins give me a pick me up after lunch.

Reply ButtonReply

Cheryl

Will MSA please review the February VIP box? I would love to hear what people think of the skin Medica TNS advanced serum. Thanks!

Reply ButtonReply

Jenna

I HATE that serum— is it just me that it pills for? Seems very expensive for what it actually does. I use a lot of high end stuff so it surprised me to not be that impressed at all with it.

Reply ButtonReply

Margie

Jenna,
I love that serum. Mine was missing from the box. I actually purchased it after my sister started using it.
Maybe you got a bad bottle?? It doesn’t pill on me. It’s actually really silky and absorbs quickly. A little goes a long way.
I’m sorry it’s not working out for you.
