The Detox Box is a green beauty subscription box from The Detox Market that costs $55/month. You'll usually receive 2-3 products from a featured brand each month that follow their strict ingredient standards and help you discover non-toxic ways to continue your beauty routine. What I love about this subscription is that I can try popular and undiscovered brands alike at a really good value!

FYI - COVID-19 Update: You can read about how The Detox Market is addressing shipping delays and other adaptations during this time right here.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The Detox Box January 2021 Review

The info cards provided give us some details on both items included this month, as well as some background on the EVOLVh brand and creator: Boris Oak. Boris created EVOLVh because he grew up spending a lot of time in his family hair salon and noticed that healthy hair was directly related to healthy hair products.

I, admittedly, find writing about hair products difficult. You all have likely seen my hair by now. It's wild, I rarely brush it, and I mostly only use oil or balms, aside from shampoo and conditioner. I choose my formulas mostly based on scent, which totally isn't the most important thing, but here we are. So bare with me through this review!

UltraShine Moisture Shampoo, 8.5 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $26.00

FYI: This formula is salt-free, sodium lauryl sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free, ethoxylate-free, synthetic fragrance-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

I have been using a violet shampoo whenever I am not using one from a box because I have lots of white/grey hair, and I want to keep it bright and popping! I am kind of glad to take a break because it makes a massive purple mess in my white shower. I am not super crazy about the scent of this formula, but that is mostly because it is a bright citrus scent, and I tend to use hair products that have more of a sexy perfume sort of fragrance. Don't let this deter you though! It does smell quite nice, and it left my hair feeling super clean but not dry. I feel like moisture formulas can be tricky because while my roots tend to get oily after a few days, the rest of my hair is so dry! This shampoo managed to clean my roots but also added a little silkiness and shine to my tresses. I don't dye my hair anymore, but I think it is worth mentioning that this shampoo is color safe!

UltraShine Moisture Conditioner, 8.5 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $28.00

FYI: This formula is silicone-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free, ethoxylate-free, synthetic fragrance-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

This conditioner had the same scent as the shampoo but is significantly creamier. I think I like this less sharp smell! It has a medium body, and it doesn't take a ton to coat my rather long hair. I tend to avoid conditioning my scalp, and I skipped it for this test too! The bottle mentions I can rinse immediately or leave the conditioner in for a few minutes, so I let it sit for about 5 minutes before I rinsed. This conditioner left my hair feeling slicker but not without texture, which I appreciate. My hair is thicker and has a natural wave that I prefer to encourage. I tried to peek at the ingredient list as I would on a skincare item, but again, I don't know a ton about ingredients as they pertain to hair. I did notice lots of familiar things like sunflower seed oil, willow bark, and lots of botanical oils and extracts!

SmartStart Leave-in Conditioner, 8.5 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $28.00

FYI: This product is silicone-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

I am happy to say I absolutely loved this spray! When you don't brush your hair often and sleep on it wet, well, tangles happen. And this spray is just so easy to spritz onto my damp hair post-shower, and finger comb through my strands. I also like the scent of this leave-in so much more than the shampoo and conditioner. It has notes of citrus, lavender, patchouli, neroli, cedarwood, and geranium and the combination feels a lot more complex than the other mostly citrus smell. It also has loads of seed oils that add shine to my hair without weighing it down. I also felt like this enhanced my waves if I let my hair air dry (which... I always do). Two thumbs up for this stuff!

TotalControl Styling Creme, 8.5 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $28.00

FYI: This product is silicone-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

I do often use balms and styling creams because my hair is a frizzy mess in the winter, and even in the summer I am a flyaway queen. You can use products like this on dry or damp hair and though this creme felt thinner than my normal balm, it was so easy to use! I added a pea-sized amount to my palms, rubbed them together, and combed my hands through my hair, finishing up by running both of my entire palms down the entire surface of my hair. It added just enough to kill any static and make me look just a little polished. Since this bottle is massive, it should last a really long time if I am just using such a small amount. I also tried this on damp hair where I used significantly more and found that, again, my natural waves were enhanced when my hair dried, but I didn't feel weighed down at all. This bottle shares a similar scent to the leave-in conditioner, which I liked.

UltraFlex Hairspray, 8.5 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $32.00

FYI: This product is alcohol-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free, synthetic fragrance-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

I don't know if I have used hair spray since college which was a time in my life when I used WAY TOO MUCH hairspray. So I might not be the most illuminating review source for this one! I will say that I decided to use a lot of it at once like I used to way back when and see if I could get this formula to ever feel "heavy". The good news is that it took quite a lot, meaning this lightweight mist is going to be great for a lighter and more natural hold. I might try this on those rare days where I curl my hair as a nice lightweight and flexible seal to my styling. This hairspray has a stronger citrus scent but also had some of the deeper notes of the leave-in and creme.

Verdict: This month's Detox Box was all about hair. I don't really get as excited for hair products as I do for skincare and makeup, but I still think this box had some great products, and of course, it had great value. For $55.00, I received $142.00 worth of product, which is a great value. While I don't think this brand could ever replace my (non-clean...) favorites, I liked getting to know this brand more, and I will certainly use all of these items eventually. I will say that I am looking forward to a return to skincare new month though!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. As a loyal subscriber to several green beauty boxes, I would love to get another reviewer’s take. It seems very generic at this point. Spread them around, MSA. Megan, clearly does not use a lot of hair products. How about have a reviewer who does put product onto their hair, clearly. Taryn, Jessica, Haley, they all have great hair!

I don’t know how you manage to make hair products sound interesting, but you do! I love your free spirit attitude towards your hair. I don’t like to fuss much with mine either, but I do appreciate having long, healthy hair.

I know I always say this, but your reviews, Megan, are always so pleasant to read ☺️

Great review, I like citrus and our hair is similar. I was on the fence about this box and if this review had gone up when they were still selling it, your review would have tipped the scales and I would have purchased a 3 month sub. What’s FOMO after you miss out? I have that.

I agree, I would have signed up for 3 months had this box still been available. I love hair products!
