In the weeks leading up to our 5th Annual Galentine's Day event, we've been hard at work planning exclusive deals, fun activities, and giveaways from our readers' favorite brands. Don't forget to mark your calendars for February 13th!
The MSA Team's Streaming Recommendations for Galentine's Day
Before February 13th rolls around, we're making sure to load up our streaming queues with the most binge-worthy shows and movies. While Galentine's Day may be a bit different this year, there are plenty of ways that you can celebrate in a safe, relaxing, and socially distanced way thanks to this deal from Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.
New subscribers can take advantage of a 3-streaming service bundle that includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ all together for just $12.99/month! (Disney+ alone costs $6.99/month, Hulu alone starts at $5.99/month, and ESPN+ alone costs $4.99/month. The bundle will save about $5 per month if you subscribe to all three streaming services.)
These three streaming services seem to have a little of everything for an entire household! From cult classics like The Princess Diaries to blockbusters like Bridesmaids, here's what the team is planning to watch this Galentine's Day:
Becca, Contributing Writer:
Becca's Recommendation: The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries: A Royal Engagement
Why She Loves It: "There is nothing that makes my heart go pitter-patter more than a girly, happy, princess movie, and this series delivers! If you like funny, light-hearted romantic comedies, these movies are for you.....the handsome prince is just an added bonus!"
Mallory, Community Manager:
Mallory's Recommendation: Hamilton
Why She Loves It: "There are very few things in life that I love more than the first Treasury Secretary and original famous New Yorker, Alexander Hamilton. As a diehard fan of the man himself and a proud member of the The Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society (yes, it's totally a real thing), I've binged the musical dozens times and I'm so thankful that it's readily available on Disney+. Hamilton is absolute perfection and will never get old! One of my favorite scenes has always been when the Schuyler sisters are first introduced. It's exactly what I would imagine a 1700s-era girl-power anthem to be, and the always-fierce Angelica Schuyler fully embodies the spirit of Galentine's Day with her relentless love and support of Eliza (and Peggy!). Luckily, my best friend is equally obsessed with Hamilton, so we'll be coordinating a socially-distanced re-watch on Galentine's Day."
Caragh, Contributing Writer:
Caragh's Recommendation: Judy (movie, 2019)
Why She Loves It: "I'd love to watch the movie Judy on Hulu for Galentine's Day to learn more about Judy Garland's life, and to see all the beautiful singing and performing. I remember seeing her when I was little in The Wizard of Oz singing 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' It was so magical to me! Renée Zellweger is so talented and gets rave reviews portraying her in the movie. I absolutely love her in my other V-day fave, Bridget Jones’s Diary!"
Megan, Senior Writer:
Megan's Recommendation: The Princess Bride
Why She Loves It: "This movie is a classic! Sure, it is a little silly, but it is still so charming and a great love story packed with action, fantasy and Rodents Of Unusual Size. This is a movie that makes me feel super nostalgic and cozy, and I think it is also a great Valentine's/Galentine's day choice because it is romantic without being over the top."
Samantha, Copywriter & Editor:
Samantha's Recommendation: Younger
Why She Loves It: "There are 3 things wrong with this show. 1. 24 minutes is simply not enough. 2. They can't film it as quickly as I can binge it. 3. Literally nothing; Younger has it all- style, wit, sisterhood, friendship, Charles/Josh (if you watch it, you know just what I'm talking about)... I shamelessly love it. Younger will never get old to me!"
Jessica, Contributing Writer:
Jessica's Recommendation: Brooklyn 99
Why She Loves It: "I actually binged the entire series of Brooklyn 99 last year during the summer, but since the world is a dark and scary place I’ve found a lot of comfort in rewatching shows (I think there’s something in the psychology of knowing since you’ve already watched it, you know everything will be okay?). Brooklyn 99 is hilarious- I literally laugh out loud almost every episode; and I like the sitcom style of knowing everything will be alright at the end of the 30 minute show (more like 22 minutes, because I paid extra for the Hulu with no ads plan). Since now isn’t a great time to go out for drinks or desserts, being comfy at home with something that makes me smile is exactly how I plan on spending my Galentine’s Day."
Abby, Contributing Writer:
Abby's Recommendation: Superstore
Why She Loves It: "Superstore is light and easy to watch and is full of laughs. The characters are so lovable, and it always reminds me of the shenanigans my coworkers and I used to pull."
Lindsey, Contributing Writer:
Lindsey's Recommendation: Top Chef
Why She Loves It: "I’m a total binge-watcher, and Top Chef is one of my favorite reality shows of all time. I’m currently rewatching season 4, and I love how the creativity of the contestants inspires me to mix things up in my own kitchen! (And don’t get me started about my culinary crush on Richard Blais…)"
Jenny, Designer:
Jenny's Recommendation: Bridesmaids
Why She Loves It: "I think Bridesmaids is the best buddy comedy out there. So many talented comedians in one place, what's not to love!"
Laine, Contributing Writer:
Laine's Recommendation: WandaVision
Why She Loves It: "One of the things my closest gals and I started doing last fall was watching movies together online via Teleparty, and it was kind of the saving grace of 2020 for me! We make some of the most appalling jokes, oftentimes typing each others' names out in full in response, chiding each other like the March sisters in a very strange sequel to 'Little Women.' This time we're going to open up a chat window on social media, do a Disney+ GroupWatch, and dive into WandaVision! One of us has seen a few of the episodes with her husband, but the rest of us have been holding off, and now we're waiting to watch at least the first several episodes all together. We all studied the arts in college and love acting, writing, costuming, and art direction, so with as richly-put-together as this new offering from Marvel appears, I think we're going to have PLENTY to discuss!"
Naomi, Contributing Writer:
Naomi's Recommendation: Weakest Link
Why She Loves It: "Jane Lynch is BRILLIANT and the show is delightfully engaging/interactive. You can't help but play along."
Taryn, Content Writer:
Taryn's Recommendation: Normal People
Why She Loves It: "I have watched this show three times since it came to Hulu in the Spring. It is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. A true love story that takes you through the years of two people that deeply need each other and love each other on a different level. It is visually beautiful, taking place in Ireland, and just a breathtaking story. Oh and Paul Mescal, enough said!"
