GlossyBox May 2021 Review

GlossyBox includes an info booklet that tells you about each included item, its value, and a tip on how to use it. Plus a coupon code for $25 off at Velvet Eyewear!

Extra Treat: Uriage Thermal Water, 1.7 fl oz. - Estimated Value $4.08 (buy 5 fl oz. here for $12.00)

This was an extra treat included for loyal customers. This spray can be used on your face and body to cool and hydrate. You don't need to rub this in or wipe it down, just spray and let it cool your skin down instantly. This formula is a powerful treatment formulated with trace elements and mineral salts, a source of radiance for your skin to moisturize, soothe, and protect. Summer can be hot where I live and we've been having 85 and above degree days. I used this on myself when I was outside for a few hours with my kids. I used it mainly on my legs and arms when I was feeling extra hot. I have to be honest though, I didn't notice a huge difference in my skin after using it. I didn't feel a big cooling sensation and my skin didn't feel moisturized. It just felt like sort of cooler water was sitting on my skin. I honestly would rather use a spray bottle to cool myself down on those extra hot days that I am not in a pool because I just didn't really see the benefit of this product.

Kneipp Valerian & Hops Mineral Bath Salt in Dream Away, 2.1 oz. - Retail Value $4.00

I have not been taking baths as much as I would have liked this year. If you follow my reviews then you might remember that I told myself that I would use my beautiful master bath more often for a little self-care time. I was really excited to receive this bath salt packet because I needed some me time and I knew it would help my sore muscles. This blend is all about relaxation to help you doze off to sleep easily. It is made with essential valerian oil and hops extract, known for encouraging relaxation. It helps to quiet the mind and relax your body. Yes, please! This bath salt smelled so soothing and unique. It left my skin feeling soft and help to relax my body and mind after a very long day.

AVEDA Nutriplenish Leave-In Conditioner, 1 fl oz. - Retail Value $12.00

This is a vegan and plant-infused leave-in conditioner that has some amazing reviews! This is a no-rinse conditioner that can be applied to wet or dry hair to instantly hydrate, detangle, and protects all hair types and textures for up to 72 hours. This formula helps to detangle while protecting your hair from thermal styling along with a naturally derived UV filter that helps protect hair from the drying effects of the sun. My mom used to work for an AVEDA Salon for many years so I used their products for a very long time and am familiar with the brand and the products. My hair is very long and super thick, and my curls tend to cause pretty big knots at the back since I only wash my hair every other day. I really could use a leave-in to help with those extra knots that conditioner just doesn't fully help. My issue with leave-ins is that in order to have them work with my thick hair then I have to use a lot which leaves me with a residue as though I didn't rinse my hair thoroughly, leaving my hair sort of sticky and stiff. I hoped that this product would work, but I found that it did the same thing. It helped slightly with my knots, but not a ton and as I brushed I got that little film of product coming off of my hair onto my brush and leaving residue on my hair. This was a hard pass for me and my hair which really bummed me out since this has so many amazing reviews!

Bellapierre StayPut Brow Gel in Chestnut - Retail Value $25.00

I just tinted my eyebrows after a year of not being able to get to the spa. I really liked my eyebrows to be darker, but since they are so light I can really only achieve that look with a tint. Once that tint fades though or if I can't get to the spa right away, brow gels or pencils are perfect for me! I did use this gel to test it and really loved it, but I don't know if you can really see the full color and coverage since mine is so dark currently. This gel is interesting because it feels like a gel but it is wax-based while also being waterproof. You can really build with this shade and get a firm hold and solid coverage. I am also loving the packaging with the little brush that just pops off the top to use for application. This isn't something I am going to use right away, but it will be handy to have as my tint fades.

Nails.INC Nail Polish Blossom Kisses – Estimated Value $11.00

I've been trying to polish my nails once a week, a great polish just makes me feel great. I don't have a ton of polishes though and now that my daughter wants her nails polished too I was so excited to get such a pretty pink! This polish really fell flat for me though. It was super thick and caused a lot of streaks that I could not smooth out. It was also really sticky that caused some weird bubbles and lines to form. I didn't love the color on me, but the fact that the polish gave me such a poor finish I wasn't too excited about how my nails turned out.

Earth Harbor HELIOS Anti-Pollution Youth Ampoule, 1 fl oz. - Retail Value $48.00

This bottle is so beautiful! This oil is great for renewing skin through stem cell technology while restoring depleted antioxidants, normalizing skin pH, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. They recommend using this for skin in need of aftersun replenishment and bold defense against the elements. Some of the main ingredients in this oil include red algae astaxanthin, plant stem cells, neroli flower, sweet orange oils, cranberry seed oil, marula, grapeseed, baobab, and borage seed oils. I really love that for recommended use they say how versatile this blend is so you can really use it as you need. I can't say that I have noticed a huge difference in my skin just yet with this oil, but it does leave me feeling hydrated and refreshed. I have been using two drops at night after a long hot day in the sun for that extra boost.

Verdict: This month's box was another miss for me. There didn't seem to be any showstopping products to make the other smaller items still feel special. The Earth Harbor Ampoule is lovely and my skin is loving it so far! The eyebrow gel is another product that I liked, but it wasn't anything that I couldn't live without. It will be good to have on hand when I need to fill in my brows as my tint fades, but other than that I won't use it every day. The thermal water was sort of confusing to me since it didn't feel cooling when I used it on my very hot and sweaty skin. The leave-in might have just been an overuse or just not the right product for my hair, but it left so much residue behind that I felt I needed to wash it again the next day. The products this month have an estimated retail value of around $104.08 which is great for a $21.00 box. I am sad that there was another month of just so-so products for me. I normally love this box and always tell people that it is totally worth the cost, but the past two months have just been eh. Maybe it is just that weird seasonal transition period and the products might not be working well for me personally, but I will always remain hopeful that next month will be better. How was this month for you, did it fall flat? Let me know in the comments!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, but be quick!

From GlossyBox

The month that you order in is the first month that you will receive. For example, if you subscribe any time between January 1-31, your recurring subscription will begin with the January Box. Got the May box today. I received all the items in this article. Was very happy to get the nail polish. I love Nails, Inc. and they have the best brush in the business; it somehow curves just right to get the edges without having to swipe several times. And the polish is great, too! This color looks less shocking pink on your nails than it does in the bottle or the photos.

I used the bath soak as a foot soak since I don’t take baths, and it was very nice. The Earth Harbor ampoule is worth the subscription. Weirdly, my info booklet lists DEW/You Flawless Skin Highlighter as one of my products, but I never saw that in any spoilers, and I received the brow gel instead. It also listed a deluxe mini sunscreen which I did not receive. The box itself is gorgeous, BTW and it’s a keeper.

1st off, I have to say: I’m obsessed w/how your brows turned out, Taryn! (Not tht they looked bad before- by any means,) but they look fabulous tinted! 2nd thing, I so want to try the Earth Harbour brand oils…This oil tht you reviewed ‘Helios’ looks like a nice, luxe oil…I love the aesthetic of the other oils I’ve seen frm this brand, simplistic yet catches the eye. (At least for me anyway). The face oil alone would be worth it to get the box, since it would be at a discount…Everything else would be gifted. Unless somehow I could get the polish to work for me. The color is so pretty! I’ve had hits & misses w/Nails Inc polishes so…And, I think the leave-in conditioner would weigh down my fine, thin, short hair…I’m gonna stop rambling now, lol. Thx for the review, as always!

Omg you are so kind! I was super happy with how they turned out and even happier to finally have them done after neglecting them for so long!

My box has finally shipped! They sent an email apologizing for the lateness on, I believe, the 22nd. They said I’d get a shipping notice from sometime between that email and the 27th, which I find odd. How come they don’t know? I guess it’s slightly better for them to admit that rather than give me a solid date.

Relevant portion of dispatch email:
“Your order has been shipped and will be with you shortly!

Delivery is estimated between
Mon 31 May – Wed 02 Jun

We send each item as soon as it is available. If items you ordered are not listed below, you will receive a further email once they have been sent.”

They also indicated I’m getting Variation 3, which may play into the timing of the email and shipping.

I’ve had GlossyBox for about 3 1/2 years now. In the beginning, CS was wonderful, but it has sadly gone *way* downhill. I can’t get them to stop charging a debit card I’ve deleted from my account. It’s fricken ridiculous and may be the end of my road as a “Glossy.”

I am so sorry to hear you are having so many shipping issues! Hopefully your box arrives soon.

I had this very issue with them charging a card I deleted. I used to be a subscriber for like 5 years. And after I canceled, I didn’t get another charge for years. Then all of a sudden, they charged that card 4 times in one month. I got the emails and was like UM NO!!! I didn’t have an extra $84 for 4 boxes that I didn’t want, and was no longer subscribed to. I finally just got my bank to refund the money and I got a new bank card after that mess. How dare they? That’s some crooked sh!t so ill never be a glossy girl again after that!!!

Just to help you out…..refrigerate your spa water and then spray your arms and legs. Makes a big difference. Also, spray your face with the spa water and then apply your Earth Harbour Ampoules. This helps it spread and it makes for a lovely massage. I use both products nightly and really love them.

I got an email a few days ago saying it would ship around the 28th.

My box hasn’t shipped either. I got an e-mail the 1st saying it would ship by the 10th to 15th. I messaged customer service they didn’t do anything just said if it still hasn’t shipped in 2 or 3 days let us know. It’s about time for the June billing. I’m not happy beung charged for June when May never shipped.

E-mailing them is a joke, all you get is a generic reply. I always go on chat through the website and seem to get a better answer to all my questions and concerns.

I’ve not gotten my box this month either. I chatted with a rep and she could only tell me that the variation that was being sent to me was out of stock and waiting for more product to be shipped to them. She could not give me a timeframe for shipping and gave me the option to wait or a $19.50 credit. I choose to wait 2 more weeks and If my box has not shipped with the correct products listed on my account, then I will request the $19.50 credit along with them giving me the glossy survey credits credited to my account. I’m sure when we finally get our boxes the surveys will not be available.

Luna

I’ve had multiple months worth of surveys accumulated in my account when I forgot to do them, so unless they recently changed their process (I was subbed until early this year), I think your survey for this month’s box should still be available to complete next month.

I have not received my box this month either. Honestly this company has the worst customer service. Two of the products above, the nail polish and bath salts, were in previous Glossybox boxes. This company really seems like it is going downhill fast. I can not recommend this box.

I’m a former subscriber and I have to agree 100% about their customer service. I do recall, while I was a subscriber, reading other’s accounts of issues with their CS, and thinking, oh, they must not have paid attention to the fine print, etc. Well, that was until I had a major issue that literally took months to resolve and I had in fact paid attention to the fine print (GB renewed my subscription despite me having timely cancelled per their requirements, then they refused to refund me, because “subscriptions are non-refundable,” so I had to go through my credit card company to get the refund, which did go through, but then later Glossybox reversed the refund bc I had received a box from the improperly renewed subscription – that I didn’t ask for, of course… anyway it was a whole long, drawn out thing that took tons of my time to finally get resolved). I enjoyed the box well enough, not my favorite but a decent box (esp. w/ a discount code), but I needed to cut back, and now based on my experience with their CS, I will never go back.

Christine

I had a similar experience. I signed up for a month to month box and cancelled a few months later. They confirmed cancellation. Then another box shows up and I check my account and there magically appeared an annual subscription billed month to month. I contacted GB and they claimed it is what I initially signed up for, which it certainly was not. Their company must be doing so badly they have to lie to their subscribers to make a profit. Thankfully my credit card expired and I will not be giving them my new card information.

Thank you for replying to my comment. It is good to know I am not alone.

Ivy

Hmm… looks good… my box still hasn’t even shipped yet 😔 I keep getting emails apologizing for the delay, so who knows how long it will take.

I’ve been an active annual subscriber with GlossyBox for more than five years. This is the first time that my box hasn’t even been “dispatched”yet at this late date in the month. I’m so sad, because the site also says that this box is sold out. This was a curation that I was really looking forward to. I can’t believe that after all these years with this company, this ” loyal customer ” has been totally forgotten.

I’ve been doing a lot of research on how to tame my extremely frizzy hair, this year & only recently discovered that once the product dries in your hair you can “scrunch out the crunch”. This has been a game changer for me! Maybe it would work with the leave in spray?

Everyone that I have gifted items to have said I was crazy for passing them on, but happy that they got them hahaha so maybe I was too harsh? Things just weren’t working for me!

I’ve tried some of these pricier nail polishes from subs and most do not perform much better than my Dollar Tree polish lol.

I received that bath salt from somewhere, but my boyfriend swiped it. I wish we’d receive more products like that in subscriptions.

Taryn Lowman

The polish was so bad, I thought maybe it was because I used it in my bedroom that was pretty hot due to the heat, but then I tried using it in my cool basement and same issues.

I really appreciate your honest review, though oddly I actually liked this month’s box a lot! I did receive some different products than you, which might be why I liked my box more. Instead of the brow gel and nail polish, I received an Avant lip scrub and a BellaPierre translucent powder. The lip scrub is great! I haven’t tried the powder yet, but I am much more likely to use that than a dark brow gel.
The Aveda leave-in conditioner works well on my fine hair, I didn’t notice any residue, but maybe that’s because I don’t have to use as much product on my hair type.

Taryn Lowman

I am so glad you are loving this month’s box! I really have to use a ton of product to get through my knots, from conditioner to leave-in to coconut oil, nothing really helps. Leave-ins are the only ones that doesn’t help and leave a gross residue for me. I think I would have enjoyed a lip scrub over the nail polish for sure!

Sherri

That’s interesting… I watched a YT unboxing of this box and she got the same items (w/ the brow gel and nail polish) and was commenting about how those products didn’t match what was listed on the card. And while you received different products, apparently you didn’t get what was listed on the card either.

Taryn Lowman

If you check spoilers on MSA and on GlossyBox they include a * where they list alternative products (the lists are usually pretty long) of what you might receive instead of the main featured items.
