BoxyCharm May 2021 Review

Let's see what I received!

Murad City Skin Overnight Detox Moisturizer, 1.7 fl oz - Retail Value $74.00

I generally like the Murad brand and I thought this formula was pretty great for someone like myself with drier skin. Designed to be more of a night treatment, this cream is heavy-bodied and super smooth, with a light citrus scent that I quite liked. The ingredient list is pretty great too! Some of the callouts: soothing allantoin, antioxidants from cucumber and ginger, vitamin C, and loads of other wonderful things. It is also the sort of product that arrives with one of those cool push pump caps that allows you to get the perfect amount of product without sticking your fingers inside the pot.

Beekman 1802 Dewy Eyed Illuminating & Depuffing Eye Serum, 0.5 fl oz - Retail Value $42.00

This is a brand that is getting some major hype right now so I was excited to see it. It is also the first item from this line I have tried and I am happy to report that I really liked this formula. It has loads of ingredients that are perfect for the under-eye area. First, it has a triple milk complex which is interesting. Basically, it is a mix of proteins that help balance and nourish the skin. It also has hyaluronic acid, cucumber fruit extracts, aloe, chamomile, honey, and panthenol. The texture was a medium-bodied gel that was very easy to pat onto the area of skin around my eyes and absorbed quickly. I noticed a pleasant cooling sensation and it felt like my skin was getting a little tighter within a few seconds of application. Add to that the bonus brightening effect and I think this is a very solid eye formula.

Skin INC My Daily Dose of Uplift Serum, 20 mL - Retail Value $65.00

This is starting to feel like a very skincare-focused box and I am totally here for it. This fun serum reminds me so much of bubble tea or even those really cool Orbitz drinks from the 90s. Sorry, my age is showing here! Those colorful little orbs floating in the clear serum are actually encapsulated goodies like hyaluronic acid, Q10, collagen, glycerin, and more. They burst when you start to massage the serum into your skin releasing those benefits to your face. This formula is designed to benefit anti-aging concerns for skin and with an ingredient like this, it’s easy to see why. This blend is energizing, boosts firmness, adds elasticity, and hydrates. It also absorbs really quickly into the skin and you need just a little bit to cover your entire face. I found that it layered really well with other ingredients like toners and most of my cream moisturizers so I think that most people are really going to enjoy this adorable goo.

Ciaté Shadow Flip Metallic Liquid Eyeshadow in 'Ember', 1.2 mL - Retail Value $20.00

So this liquid eyeshadow looked a lot more exciting in the tube than it did on my eyes. I was really excited because in the tube it looks like a total rainbow of color values: you have red, orange, yellow, blue, and green. But on my lids, I found it to be a little too sheer to really show off this effect and it looked mostly gray and orange. I did like the way it looked blended because it was actually a very wearable and subtle look but when it dried down it was a little too patchy for me.

Where is the blue?

You can see the patchiness issues here. Great idea, but maybe a different formula?

Sophia + Mabelle All Natural Hydrating Hybrid - Retail Value $18.00

So I didn’t like this stuff at all. First, the neutral nude shade really did not work for my complexion and was super unflattering. I also don’t really understand the purpose of this lipstick since it is stated to be a two-in-one lipstick+nourishing formula but it really just felt like a low-quality lipstick on my lips and I didn’t notice any of the supposed hydrating benefits. I also didn't love that the ingredients weren't listed on the item product page. That is a big 'nope' in my book. This brand is also unfamiliar to me and I understand that it has some questions on its origin that I’m not really prepared to speculate on because I don’t have actual proof or insight either way. I’m very comfortable reporting that I just didn’t like this lipstick based on the formula alone but I’ll leave it up to you to come to your own conclusions/research about the brand and product.

Not looking good.

Nope.

Verdict: This was kind of a weird BoxyCharm delivery because it was mostly skincare, where normally I’m used to getting more makeup in this subscription. This is not a complaint from me though because I love skincare! And the formulas that were included were all really nice and felt high quality. The makeup was less of a home run for me. It was really cool to try out that multi-chrome liquid eyeshadow but the performance just wasn’t there. The lipstick, well, I don’t have a lot of good things to say about it. Even with only three of the items this month being winners, the overall value delivered from this $25 box was still a very respectable $219. Which feels like plenty of value to justify the price of this box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box will be the June box!

Value Breakdown: At $25.00 for this box, here is what you are paying per item:

  • Murad Cream $8.45
  • Beekman 1802 Eye Serum $4.79
  • Skin INC Serum $7.42
  • Ciaté Eyeshadow $2.28
  • Sophia + Mabelle Lipstick $2.05

Alternatively, the average cost of each of the 5 items is $5.00.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

That lipstick is definitely a huge nope, but I’m really loving your hair! The cut is very flattering. Being that your hair is shorter now, Megan, are you still able to go blow dry free? The humidity is making me look like I just got a perm (no matter what I use in my hair.) I’ve pretty much waved the white flag at this point but would love to know what you use to tame your mane because it looks fantastic! ☺️

I would have been content with this box. Instead i got the kab palette with a broken mirror. The murad which was cool and honestly i cant even remember the rest it was mostly bummer.

I saw the flip in the eyeshadow in your pictures, I got the pink one, but now going to try it, cuz I think it’s pretty neat.
That was a good review.
I thought the skincare was very good in this box.

I think that eyeshadow looks good on you. I was afraid to try it cause I thought it would be too many colors lol.

Thanks for your great reviews.

I resubbed for the half off plus $10 coupon for pop up deal. I ended up with one of the best Boxycharms I ever received. I got the Beekman eye and the serum as well. Love both. In fact, out of the dozens of serums I’ve used, this one definitely has a place in my top three. I have combo skin and it’s amazing for it. I also received the color shift shadow, and like you Megan, I was intrigued! It didn’t perform color-wise as expected; however, I loved the subtle color change look, and my lids didn’t have any patchiness. As an aside, I’m sticking around for June because I was offered a choice item as well, even though I purchased my box after choice had closed. Perhaps BC is showing some life after all (?).

At least you didn’t get the KAB palette! Great skincare items, I really wanted the serum and Beekman, but got brushes and that junk palette instead, oh well

I believe there is proof on reddit of both KAB and Sophia & Mabelle being DLS private label brands if anyone is interested in digging around the beauty boxes subreddit there have been a few posts

Except for the cheap packaging, I really like the Sophie & Mabelle products. I got a highlight from either BC or Ipsy, a cream that I actually used up, but not before I broke the package. And I really like this lipstick too but the cap falls off in my purse or pocket.

I did not mind the KAB palette. It was not the best, but it worked! I also really liked their lips oils, I got from Boxy. I ended up getting another from pop up. It was not great, but it was not horrible.

I actually really like the KAB products that I’ve tried and wish I had gotten the eyeshadow palette. The lip glosses and blush palette are amazing and I have ordered other stuff from their website as well. When I first subscribed to Boxy I remember getting a lot of Tarte brand products which I hate and never work for me (their eyeshadow always has a lot of fallout) so I’m happy to try new brands. To each their own I guess.
