NewBeauty TestTube is a bi-monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Every other month they send you a tube full of deluxe and full-size beauty samples and you also get a digital subscription to NewBeauty Magazine. It’s a little pricier than other beauty subscriptions, but in general, the value is usually great.

Our July 2021 Review
Usually, this subscription arrives with a very informative booklet, but it looks like they have gone digital. It also arrived with a promo discount card for lip filler Restylane ($100 off) and info on breast augmentation. I need neither of these boosts, but since these are super popular cosmetic enhancers, I feel like someone else out there might have more interest.
Now, on to the items!
Tatcha Kyoto Red Silk Lipstick, 3.3 g – Retail Value $55.00
Let's not play around and pretend this isn't the most exciting and hype-worthy thing inside the Tube this month! Like many of you, this was the item I was most excited about, so, I won't make you wait. First things first: packaging. This lipstick arrived in a beautiful oversized box which immediately brought the "fancy" factor. Inside, the black and gold bullet was extra weighty, exactly like most of us would imagine for such a $$$ lipstick. If I had to have a complaint, it is that the lid isn't magnetized, but even though I love a snappy cap, it isn't necessary and I am just being picky. The lipstick itself is in a really unique faceted shape that I hated to ruin by using it. It felt like the lipstick equivalent of peeling the clear film off of a brand new iPhone: necessary, but still nerve-wracking. The color is a dream, of course. It is a cool red that was actually created exclusively for Chloë Sevigny to wear to the 2014 Met Gala. It was so popular that Tatcha brought it on as a core collection shade later after many requests. It feels extremely light on the lips but has excellent color coverage and I believe the cool red will be really flattering to most wearers. The finish is velvety and somewhere between a satin and matte on my lips. All in all, it is gorgeous. I am pleased.
She is pretty.
NatureLab. Tokyo Perfect Shine Oil Mist, 4 fl oz - Retail Value $17.00
Sure, this hair product might seem a little less exciting right after that lipstick, but I really love this brand and find this bottle a really awesome addition to this Tube. NatureLab. Tokyo is one of those lines that feels incredibly cool in that hip-minimal way but is still very affordable. Their formulas do what they advertise, smell awesome, and always come in weirdly cool bottles. This shine oil is a great lightweight mist that you can use on damp or dry hair. It adds to manageability and glossiness without adding weight, and smells beautiful, with powdery violet and creamy nutty notes. In addition to giving hair shine, it also protects from heat damage and helps your color last longer.
Virtue Restorative Treatment Mask, 1.7 oz - Retail Value $32.00
I am not generally someone who wants to see lots of hair products. Mostly because I like to ignore my hair and neglect it. But if you are going to send them to me, make them like this and the one before it in this review! This mask was really something. It made my hair look so soft and glossy without adding greasiness or weight. I used it before the NatureLab. mist and my hair hasn't looked that glossy or, well, cared for, in ages. My only complaint about this product is the small size for the price will prove prohibitive to a repurchase, but at least a little goes a long way. It also smells deliciously creamy and perfumey, and the scent clings to your hair after you've dried it. This is a great mask if you want to leave your shower with hair that feels like it has been to the salon.
HERBO Perfume Oil Roll-On, 10 mL - Retail Value $12.00
The hits just keep on coming! I am a perfume collector/hoarder and I like them from all scent families and types. I don't really have a signature scent at this point because each day is a chance to customize my fragrance to how I feel that day. This is a scent that lands very much on the more natural side of things. It is arguably earthy-crunchy, but I say that with love. The notes of rose, lavender, sandalwood, and cypress smell exactly like you think they will. It is one of those scents that smells very much like it belongs in a spa that prioritizes natural formulas. Also inside is a 50 mg dose of hemp extract that didn't change how I experienced this scent but is worth noting. My current favorite use for this is on my wrists before a mist of Flowerbomb. It gives one of my favorite perfumes more staying power and depth.
Repêchage Clear Complexion Drying Lotion, 7.5 mL - Retail Value $27.00
I have some feelings about this product and they aren't bad at all, as long as it is used properly. The applicator is a precision tip for a reason: this should only be used as a spot treatment and not across large areas of the face. It should also be reserved for those big uglies that keep you up at night. You know, the red eruptions on your chin the week before your period, or a zit located on sensitive skin that shouldn't be squeezed. I actually have a monster on my left eyelid right now so the timing here was great. That is delicate skin that I do not want to pinch but the bump really hurts so I need it to go away STAT. This concoction has alcohol and salicylic acid which work together to quickly dry out unruly pimples. I am always complaining about how many alcohols are drying in skincare, but this is an example of when I want to harness that power for good. Just a thin coating of this stuff creates an instant cooling effect that, honestly, burns a little. It leaves a white mark on your skin which is a great reason to use this treatment before bed. In the morning rinse it off and rejoice that your troublesome spot's lifespan has been greatly reduced.
BABE LASH Essential Serum Mini, 1 mL - Retail Value $37.00
I have never used lash serums on my actual lashes before, mostly because I wear contacts and my eyes are on the sensitive side. I have, however, used them on my eyebrows and I do think that over time they totally help my brows grow back thicker. I also have read too many articles about them changing iris colors, though, admittedly, I do not have first-hand knowledge of this. This little gold tube houses a very fine brush you can use to apply the clear gel-serum. Sure, it takes a little time to see the effects. But I have been using this sort of product on and off for a few years I think it has been worth the wait.
ScarAway Clear Silicone Scar Sheets, 6 ct - Retail Value $14.99
I always love how this subscription sends dream items like a $55 lipstick paired with super practical items like these scar sheets. As someone who is incredibly accident-prone, little things like this are handy to have around. I feel like during the summer my bare legs are even more prone to cuts and scratches on outdoor adventures and these sheets should help cut down the risk of unsightly reminders of misadventures on my skin. These patches should be used after a wound has fully closed, and you can leave them on for up to 10 days. You do need to use these consistently for a few weeks to really see improvement, but depending on the scar, that is totally worth it.
HAIRMAX Quick Dry Hair Towel - Retail Value $19.00
As someone with very thick hair, towels like this help me cut down on my airdry time by absorbing a lot more water than a normal towel. This oversized (19” x 52”) towel easily wraps around my head and stays in place for as long as needed.
Verdict: This was a great NewBeauty TestTube! One of the best in recent memory. Sure, that red lipstick really took it over the top, but the other items were also wonderful in their own right. The overall value was also pretty staggering: $213.99 for a $38.90 subscription. Sure, this brand has had some Tubes that didn't feel this grand, but if they continue to be this awesome, NBTT is basically a delivery that will be a hot commodity for beauty subscription addicts.
