First Impressions

Open Box for Bombay and Cedar Beauty Box August 2021

This is my first, The Beauty Box by Bombay & Cedar!

What's Inside The Box

The box arrives with a card that lists the products and highlights some of the brands found within. August's theme was "VIBRANT: Essentials for a brightening beauty routine".

Hüppy Toothpaste Tablets Charcoal Mint, 62 ct - Retail Value $12

I am in love with these toothpaste tablets. They make me feel like I’m brushing my teeth in the future in my self-cleaning bathroom aboard my hovercraft apartment. These tablets leave my teeth feeling sparkling clean and my mouth feeling super-fresh and minty. The flavor is a mild pleasant mint, and each tablet has a light crunchy texture that melts instantly, creating a wonderful foam that doesn’t feel like your typical thick paste. I really enjoy the little tin the tablets came in. I love that it is zero waste and reusable. This is a product that I plan to repurchase in the future.

IGK Mixed Feelings Leave-In Brunette Toning Drops, 30 ml - Retail Value $29

I have mixed feelings about this product. I didn’t see much of a change to my hair tone. My hair is a very dark brown, so that could be the reason there wasn’t much of a noticeable difference. I also have quite a bit of hair and had to use a lot of drops to evenly apply to my whole head. The product is lightly scented and has that high-end salon smell that made me feel like I just had a fresh blowout. It was easy to apply and didn’t leave my hair feeling dry or brittle.

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Body Peel, 5.5 fl oz - Retail Value $34

Anything that says ‘peel’ scares the snot out of me. I blame a particularly unfortunate face peel that left me looking like Imhotep from The Mummy before his face regenerated… YIKES. But this product promised a solution for eczema and ingrown hair follicles, both of which I frustratingly have. This product is based on science so I read, and recommend reading, the information on the site carefully before using it. All I can say is wow. The peel has almost the same consistency and texture as an exfoliator, and it was gentle but effective. My eczema patches were smoother and much less noticeable and I had fewer ingrown hairs when I used this product before shaving. After use, my skin was so smooth. The peel grabs dead skin and peels it off as you scrub, leaving behind fresh, soft, glowing skin.

Evio Tinted Lip Serum in Be Blunt, 10 ml - Retail Value $16

What I like about this lip serum is the ever-so-slight tingling sensation I get after applying it. Now, this isn’t based on any scientific evidence, but it makes me feel like the product is really putting in the work; though, to be fair, it could be the peppermint. This serum left my lips feeling pillow-soft with just a hint of a pinkish nude tint. My lips need all the help they can get because I grind my teeth in my sleep. If I didn’t wear my mouth guard, I would awake with a sore jaw and a migraine. On the downside, the mouth guard has made me a bit of a mouth-breather, which causes my lips to become very chapped and dry. I found this serum to be incredibly soothing and reparative. I am also very pleased that the product doesn’t feel sticky on my lips.

Evio Lip-spo Liner in Brooke, 1.1 g - Retail Value $11

I don’t often use lip liner… My lips are shapeless, like two lazy slugs just sitting there. Envy, thy name is ‘cupid's bow’! Now, I know that you can line your lips to the shape you want… Supposedly. I, myself, have had neither the luck nor skill to make that possible. But if at first, you don’t succeed… Try again. I am glad this product spearheaded my latest attempt. This liner is soooo creamy. It glided on smoothly and seamlessly. It was very easy to apply precisely and was comfortable to wear. The shade, a deep berry color, is beautiful as well. It is pretty matte, so I did find it a bit drying but nothing a little gloss couldn’t fix. I wouldn’t say I penciled in the perfect cupid's bow for myself, but my lips didn’t look lopsided, and that is a win.

Owl In A Towel Bergamot Hand Cream, 65 ml - Retail Value $10.99

This is a very luxurious hand cream, from the scent right, down to the texture. The fragrance is light and non-intrusive but also a delightful bright burst of citrus. It is a rich cream that is not greasy, quickly absorbed into my skin, and left my hands feeling hydrated. I also really enjoy the adorable logo of an owl in a towel; though, I may be biased… I’m a bird handler so I can tell you that owls do not enjoy being toweled. Commonly called a 'bird burrito,' towels are used to keep birds still and handlers safe in a variety of situations.

Verdict

What I enjoyed most about this Beauty Box by Bombay & Cedar was the product diversity. I'm absolutely enthralled by the Hüppy toothpaste tablets. I love how fresh and clean they make my mouth and teeth feel, and also the zero waste, reusable packaging. While the IGK toning drops may not have worked for me, I love that it's a unique product you don't normally see in subscription boxes and that it didn't dry out my hair. The Evio lip serum and lip liner are a great combo, and the shades complement each other. I really enjoy how the lip serum leaves my lips feeling soft and supple. I was also impressed by the Real Chemistry body peel. It really smoothed out my eczema patches and definitely prevented ingrown hairs when used before shaving. I can always use a good hand cream, and the luxurious feel and adorable logo of the Owl in a Towel cream was enough to get me excited about a humdrum hand cream, and I appreciate how quickly the product absorbs into my skin without leaving behind a greasy residue that would transfer to everything I touch. Overall, I quite enjoyed this box, and I look forward to receiving the next one.

Ok, first, I did not read the byline at the top to see who wrote the review, and I saw the photos by Megan, so I was quite confused when I got to the bottom and saw that the review was written by Naomi. I was thinking, “When did Megan become a bird handler?”
So, anyway, you’re a bird handler? That is awesome! Do you work at a zoo or a rehab center or something?

Also, this box looks amazing, except for the hair drops. Wish I could still get it.

“I know that you can line your lips to the shape you want…”

For some reason this statement made me laugh because I would look like a bonafide clown if I did that! 🤡

Fun review, Naomi!

Idk about the tooth tablets, but the rest of the box sounds pretty good. Owl in a Towel is such cute branding, & I haven’t tried any thing from them yet. That Evio lip serum sounds right up my alley!

The IGK drops are amazing! It sounds like you misused them. They are supposed to be dropped into your shampoo, conditioner, serum, styling cream, etc! You don’t put them directly in your head! It’s a holy grail produce for me (the purple) and I actually put a few drops in all of the above. Hope that helps!

Thanks Katie, I tried about 15 drops in my conditioner, but I did rinse it out after 10 minutes or so and didn’t notice any visible tone change. Have you found it best to add the drops to a leave-in product?

Oh good!! I mix it in almost every product I put on my hair (mainly shampoo conditioner and serum). It doesn’t change the tone as much as maintain it!
