My Subscription Life is a new series designed to help you get to know the MSA team a little bit better. Each profile introduces a different member of the team, showcases their favorite subscriptions, and explores how subscriptions impact their lives.
This week on My Subscription Life, we're talking to Megan, who's been writing for My Subscription Addiction for the last three years. Megan is based in Pittsburgh, and she's a bonafide beauty maven who reviews lots of beauty, skincare, and lifestyle subscriptions for MSA, including Allure, Adore Me, FabFitFun, Boxwalla, See New, IPSY, Beachly, and more.
Read on for a peek into Megan's subscription life!
My Subscription Life: Megan
Lindsey: Hi Megan, thanks for taking some time to talk about your subscription life! Can you start by sharing a little bit about yourself?
Megan: I am 35, a very sunny Leo, and I have low impulse control. I also find it awkward to talk about myself, which is one of the things that makes my job here at MSA a challenge sometimes. Hobbies? Long walks on the beach. Wait, Pennsylvania is landlocked. I really enjoy collecting hoarding art supplies, painting large-scale canvases, learning more about skincare ingredients, and hanging out with my dogs. Fun fact: I am the hypeman of my friend circle. You're doing amazing, sweetie!
L: What does your average Saturday look like?
M: I am a workaholic, but this last year had made me realize it's ok to take a breather and have some time off. Even if it is just one day a week. I generally do try to get a few hours of work done on a Saturday but you can also find me at the gym (I'm a regular and I still hate it), sneaking Teddy into TJ Maxx, and/or not cleaning my house even though I said I would. I also love those Saturdays where I grab lunch with a friend or even - gasp - sleep in a little.
L: Can you describe a memorable meal, vacation, or birthday?
M: Every meal is memorable. I love food so much. I dance when I eat, and my husband hates it. Anyone else out there a food dancer?
The most memorable vacation would have to be the two weeks I spent out in LA as an egg donor way back when I was in college. You have to wait around for the perfect moment for the doctors to retrieve those little things and that meant tons of downtime filled with my best friend (I took her along for the ride!), a rental convertible, great food, and lots of sightseeing. We even ate at The Ivy, which was actually really ridiculous. Sure, there was some less-pleasant medical stuff, but it was such a fun experience because we had the best time and it was extremely gratifying to help a family expand. Julie and I still talk about that trip!
L: When and how did you first discover subscription boxes?
M: I remember subscribing to Birchbox when it first launched and was kind of a new and exciting thing! As someone who had recently moved from a large city with loads of amazing shopping to a very small town with no mall, it was a great way to explore my beauty product obsession without driving an hour each way.
L: Which subscriptions do you currently receive?
M: Aside from the ones I review here on MSA, I recently subscribed to the Wildflower Bloom Box (an indie nail glitter subscription!) and Scentbird for niche perfumes. I also spend way too much money per month subscribing to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Lightroom.
L: Which is your favorite subscription?
M: See New Skincare has been on fire and it has yet to disappoint!
L: If you could only subscribe to one box or service, which would it be?
M: Only one?! Ok. Probably Ipsy X because the brands have been wild lately, and even though it is quarterly, it has been full of amazing things that were likely already in my Sephora wishlist.
L: Describe your perfect subscription.
M: Some sort of Kawaii Japanese pen subscription would really rock my world. And if it included fun candies too? SOLD.
L: Which subscription item that you’ve received in the past is the most memorable?
M: I really loved receiving the YSL lipstick in the most recent Allure Beauty Box Limited Edition. I know a ton of us had a pretty icky year (or two), and I didn't know how much I needed a new favorite red. I swipe this one on and feel immediately fancy and confident. Is it just lipstick? Sure. But its sometimes the little things.
L: People gravitate to subscriptions for different reasons. What are your primary reasons for subscribing?
M: I just love getting mail. Like, I really, really, really love getting mail. Crappy day? MAIL! Feeling in a style funk? MAIL! Need to pamper yourself? Probably something in the mail for that.
L: If someone offered you the opportunity to curate your own subscription box, what would you send out to your subscribers?
M: Oh wow. Um, probably some sort of full-size amazing skincare product, a giant crystal, an art coffee-table book, and dozen colorful French macarons.
Thanks so much, Megan!
