Sephora Favorites are exclusive, limited edition sets filled with Sephora's top-selling and highly coveted beauty and skincare products. Sephora Favorites kits are released several times a year and the curated collections sell out quickly. I'm not going to lie: Sephora Favorites kits are like bubble tea to me. I can't have just one, so I eagerly look forward to each launch and will usually purchase them even if I won't be reviewing it for MSA.

They recently released their Sephora Favorites: Plump and Hydrate Lip Kit featuring two full-sized and three travel-sized lip products promising to (you guessed it) plump and hydrate your lips

FYI – this is still available for purchase.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

This set doesn't come with an info-sheet the way some sets do- if you're looking for size information or more details on the ingredients list, that's on the back of the packaging. Everything came tucked inside the cute reusable Sephora-branded makeup bag, which I prefer over the box packaging Sephora will also use for these sets.

The Breakdown - What's Inside The Box

NARS Afterglow Lip Balm in Dolce Vita, 3 g - Retail Value $28

Once I saw that this kit came with a full-size NARS Afterglow balm, I knew this set would be a must-purchase for me. I've tried samples of the afterglow balm formula before and love the tint of color and boost of balmy hydration this gives my lips, and the sheer dusty rose shade of Dolce Vita has a glossy finish that is still very comfortable to wear. This is the kind of tinted lip balm I love because I can just swipe it on and head out the door, or I could pair it with a lip liner for a more polished look. This isn't the most hydrating lip balm I have ever tried, but it is one of the best ones I've liked when it comes to combining color payoff with a balm texture. As a side note, I've swatched all of the lip products in this set, and if you swipe through the photos you can see how each individual product looks.

ROSE INC Lip Sculpt Amplifying Lipstick in Beams, 3 g - Retail Value $26

I was surprised by how much I adored this lipstick. Rose Inc is a new brand to me, but so far everything I have tried from them has been really lovely. The shade Beams is described as a plum, but I would definitely classify this as a mauve lipstick. The crayon design makes it easy to line my lips and then fill them in, and the formula is creamy and non-drying. This is a matte formula without the harsh dryness a matte lipstick can give, and while it doesn't have all-day staying power I was happy with how long it lasted when I wore it.

Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Lip Plumper in Clear, 0.05 oz - Estimated Value $8 (buy the 0.10 oz version for $16)

Many people love this lip-plumping gloss from Too Faced.  I am not one of them. I have never been a big believer in the "beauty is pain" mantra, and pain is definitely what this lip gloss brings me. Within a few minutes of applying this always causes my lips to burn, and I just would rather have less plump lips than full lips that hurt.  This is a lip gloss that absolutely gives results and my lips do look plumper after I apply it, I just do not personally find the discomfort worth it.

fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Treatment Lip Balm, 2.2 g - Estimated Value $13.30 (buy the 4.3 g version for $26)

I love fresh as a brand, but this lip balm from them doesn't do much for me. It claims to be an "intensive lip treatment that moisturizes extra-dry lips for up to 24 hours," but this truly never leaves my lips feeling hydrated for more than an hour or two. I will say that I have chronic issues with lip dryness so maybe I am an unintentionally harsh critic, but for $26 a tube I need a lip balm to drench my lips in moisture and keep it that way, and this doesn't deliver.

LAWLESS Forget The Filler Lip Plumper Line Smoothing Gloss in Velvet, 0.05 oz - Estimated Value $15 (linked to the same size product in a different shade)

Where the Too Faced plumping gloss burns, this one by Lawless never goes beyond a zesty tingle. It's formulated with rosehip oil and shea butter along with capsicum from dried cayenne peppers. I feel like it did make my lips look poutier, especially the bottom lip which naturally has more surface area for the gloss to cover and plump. I liked the rosy mauve shade of this gloss on its own, but it was also really pretty when I used this on top of the Rose Inc lip crayon.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $30

Value Breakdown:

  • Nars: $28
  • Rose Inc: $26
  • Too Faced: $8
  • fresh: $13.30
  • Lawless: $15

Sephora promised a value of $87 with this kit, and my math adds up to $90.30. That means you're saving 67% off of the retail price or estimated value for each lip product!

Key Takeaways

Sephora releases about two or three of these lip kits a year, and I adore them. Even though this set included two products I've tried before and didn't love in the Too Faced and fresh products, I still consider this a winner because both full-size lip products in the set were absolutely lovely. I also appreciate that the Lawless lip gloss didn't hurt- maybe I can slowly start adventuring into the world of plumping lip glosses now that I know there are alternatives to the sting and burn I've experienced prior. If you like tinted lip balms or lip glosses, this is definitely a set that's worth the money.

Hi Sherri, I have an idea that you could try if you’re wanting to see how these shades look on a person with much deeper skin tone. A lot of the product brands, on their own websites, often show swatches of their items on a variety of skin tones. So while it would involve a bit more time on your end, I think you could find photos of these products on each product company’s website, where they might show a few different models and how the color works on them.

I hope the box is still available, I always love a Sephora lip box. Funny thing about that fresh Sugar product: between sub boxes and my own purchases, I’ve probably gone through a dozen or more of these. But I don’t love the product; like the reviewer, I find that the consistency is great, packaging is nice, but I find myself reapplying it constantly. Yet I still buy more, so…lol I don’t know what that means or why I do it. Perhaps I’d describe it as a mid-level workhorse?

Based on the review though, I think I would like if not love this box. Going to Sephora online right now to try for it.

I might head over to Sephora later to see if I can get this set. It’s almost Spring – time to brighten up!

I have my eye on this kit but can’t justify the expense at the moment 🙁 But I’m happy to see this review because now I can see the set will be worth it.

Jessica, thanks for the reviews, especially for always modeling the lip products!

Always love and trust your reviews, Jessica! You might have persuaded me to get this basically just for the Nars and Rose Inc. 🙂

Thank you so much, Kate K. Comments like these fill me with so much joy 🙂

This was a great review and I appreciate the details Jessica includes. However, it would be really helpful if someone with a darker skin tone could review these lip kits as well.

Sherri

Wow, that is shockingly rude and insensitive.

MSA has a relatively small staff, I believe, but I do know that they have some POC on their staff. However, perhaps those people don’t want to review these specific products? I understand the concern. I see nail polish companies, including indies, are trying very hard to get swatchers with a variety of skin tones. I’m just not sure that MSA has a large staff to accommodate this request. But it is food for thought – something for them to consider. I just wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

Aren’t lips lips?

Sherri

Snow, I’m sorry my point is not coming across as I had intended it to. Yes, I am well aware that there are POC who do reviews for MSA, and my comments in no way are trying to ignore that fact or minimize their contribution. But for someone to simply suggest that more offerings by POC would be helpful (in a area where generally – not MSA specific – POC are traditionally under-represented), only to basically be told that they don’t need that, well, that just seems unfair. I mean, the original commenter seemed to feel a need, and very respectfully made the suggestion. Realistically it may not be a suggestion that can be fulfilled (due to staffing or any number of other issues), but that doesn’t mean it’s an unreasonable suggestion or one that shouldn’t have been made. Anyway, I’m just going to leave things at that, since obviously my points are coming across very well, ‘lland I take responsibility for that and apologize that my words are not really working for me today.

Snow

Ugh of course I miscounted! Six ladies….two are POC and they are all fantastic 💕

Snow

Sherri, you do realize there are five ladies that do beauty reviews for MSA and two are POC?

Sherri

It’s certainly true that no one site can be everything to everyone, and agreed, at times expectations of this site seem high, but I can understand how POC might get frustrated at times when beauty reviews are primarily done by reviewers with a significantly lighter skin tone. Besides, the original commenter complimented the reviewer and simply offered a suggestion (not a demand, a suggestion) without, IMHO, unreasonable expectations. I personally feel that it’s a little unfair to marginalize what is – again IMHO – a reasonable and understandable suggestion.

Snow

Sherri, I realize there is skin around the lip area, but it seems a high expectation to expect MSA to provide multiple skin tones for every makeup review. This kit especially was more about plumping and hydrating then adding color to lips. Expectations just seem very high here sometimes.

Sherri

Well yes, but those lips are sitting surrounded by skin tones of various shades… where the same color lippie can look vastly different depending on that skin tone. I presume the original request was not made with respect to whether the product is hydrating, or sticky, etc., but rather with respect to how it *looks* on the wearer, where skin tone makes a difference.

echo

I’m not Maria but would say that asking for reviews featuring darker skinned people is a legitimate request. Jessica posts pictures of how the various products/shades look on her and many of the items would look totally different on darker skin.

Flora

Another great review Jessica! Love your honesty and your swatches. I am not a big fan of plumped lips, I guess because I think it looks like I got a fat lip from my high school days of basketball and getting elbowed in the face. I agree about the Fresh Sugar lip balm. I think their formulas are missing an occlusive (or something). While it makes your lips really soft at first, it seems to dissipate too quickly. And that Rose Inc looks so pretty on you. I would be getting this for just the NARS and Rose Inc alone.

Hey Flora,
Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked the swatches- by the fifth selfie I was convinced my face was distorted and I had three chins. I’m glad I’m not crazy when it comes to that fresh lip balm- I agree that something is just missing to make it hydration to last.

Great review! I love lip products and have a TON, so I’ve been trying to buy less of them (she says, after buying a gloss and receiving a lipstick GWP from Lancome this week) … otherwise I would have snatched this kit up. Although the “plumping” in the title did turn me off a ton, since I also hate that burning pain for very little (if any, that I can tell) payoff! But that Lawless product looks so lovely on you, and good to know it’s less painful!

*in my Cady Heron voice* The limit does not exist.
Maybe this will be on sale by the time you venture out into buying more lip products. And if not, there will always be another one!
