First Impressions
At first glance, I was excited to see all the box contents and how we could use them to plan a date night. After further reading their date night map, I realized this wasn’t a traditional date night in because many of the activities called for us to be outdoors. Or at least, our date night would be much better if we tried all of these outdoor activities.
The box has a booklet that walks you through everything you need to gather and plan for your date night. It also outlines how you’ll use the box's contents to complete different activities.
Menu & Fireside Chats
First, they invite you to head to the kitchen. This is an optional step but sounds like a great way to start the night. The recipe card has a full menu, including:
- Brussel sprouts and bacon skewer
- Homemade lemonade
- Popcorn snack garnish
- Jalapeño popper mac n’ cheese
While they don’t include any of the ingredients to complete these recipes, they did send a s'mores popcorn snack that didn’t live up to my expectations. My husband and I made a weird face after trying it. It was probably because it was too sweet, had an odd texture, and was anything but a tasty snack.
The recipe card doesn’t mention the cocktail kit, but I guess this is when you use it. I’m not a fan of Moscow Mules, but my husband is. However, this only includes the ginger syrup and a spoon, meaning you still need to find the alcohol, club soda, and lemon – the core of your cocktail.
Set the Mood for “I Would or I Would Never”
The "set the mood" portion of the date night was pretty fun. The instructions call for you to set up a space, play their custom Spotify playlist, light the (unscented) candle, and take a minute to play a fun way. I loved that they included different questions to play the game, so you didn’t have to think of those on your own – it saved us tons of time. But, the unscented candle seemed wasteful as I would never use it again unless there’s a power outage or something.
Fort Building Challenge
We skipped this challenge but still used the comfy blanket to set up our date night space. I was surprised at how comfortable the blanket was and, most importantly, how easy it was to put it back together and save it. I wasn’t too confident at first, but you can fold it back to its original shape; that was the best part.
Stargazing
Not an indoor date night. They send you a certificate for your "date night in" star, which is pretty cool. Then you must go outside to find it using the Star Chart app. Sadly, it’s been pouring for the past few weeks here in South Florida, and where we live, seeing a star is like seeing a unicorn. So, even after “stargazing” for quite some time, we had no luck.
Pop Your Popcorn
Two confessions: 1) I had never popped corn in a cob in the microwave. 2) I burned the popcorn. I followed the instructions and set my timer for 3 minutes, but I realized I messed up when it started smelling like burned popcorn. I decided to split the non-burned popcorn to try the dill pickle popcorn seasoning on a smaller batch. Again, I missed the instructions on how to use this because I could taste much of it. I had to smear my popcorn on the seasoning to taste it; to be frank, neither of us liked it.
Adventure Together Speed Card Game
This was my favorite part of the experience. I love playing card games but never know which ones to play. So, I loved that they included the game with instructions. I’m glad to win 2 out of 3 games, but my husband will say otherwise. Plus, you can keep these.
Final Verdict
Altogether, this box involves a lot of planning to get the most out of it. I wish it had more straightforward activities that you could tackle with the box's contents, rather than having to obtain many items to try the activities. I loved trying so many of these activities, and we made the most out of it with what he had available. But I genuinely wish the box was more put-together. At least for this specific box, I would say $48.99 isn’t worth it just to get a date night idea.
