First Impressions

Boxycharm always arrives with a cute card detailing all of the products inside and listed retail values.

Now, on to the items!

Phase Zero Makeup The Necessities Eyeshadow Palette – Retail Value $40

Even I am going to admit that this palette is a little mild. And, sure, most of us use neutral shades like this far more often than brights or metallics. But I think it is always fun to have a little bit of fun inside a palette. A lot of these colors are extremely close to each other which feels a little repetitive. I will say though, that the texture here is great and pigment levels are buildable and flattering. So, as far as exciting pallets go? This one is low on the list. Usability though? Way up there.

Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturizing Cream, 50 mL - Retail Value $76

A lot of people really love this cream, I just happen to not be one of them. It has some pore-clogging ingredients that I have noticed cause breakouts on my face, even though I tend to be pretty dry and break-out-free for the most part. Specifically, ethylhexyl palmitate (number 2 on the ingredient list) and myristyl myristate (number 3). Both of these ingredients have a higher comedogenicity rating and tend to give me little bumps on my cheeks. There is also coconut oil later down the list. So, what I am saying here, is that if you are prone to acne, proceed with caution. Otherwise, try this out for yourself. There are some good ingredients here too for sure: lactic acid, vitamin E, and loads of nourishing oils. It just isn't enough to outweigh the rest for me, personally.

Eloise Beauty Prism Luxury Eye Shadow Brush Set – Retail Value $22

This brush set might be my favorite thing in this month's box. The handles are prismatic and carved like crystal, and the bristles are soft and fluffy. I also weirdly appreciate the totally rational retail value. So often I see brush sets with retail listings of $50 plus which just feels way over the top. These brushes are gorgeous, functional, and have a very realistic retail value.

Beauty for Certain Whole Lotta Mascara, 3.5 mL – Retail Value $32

This is a new brand from Bia, a rapper who used to be on the tv show Sisterhood of Hip Hop. I like the fun branding here! It's a nice change to the neutral packaging that seems super popular right now. The hourglass-shaped wand does a great job of grabbing inner lashes as well as the longer ones, and I found the formula to be mostly flake-free and long-lasting, which is great since it has been super hot here. I also didn't have any eye irritation.

Dr Lili Fan Probiotic Xlash Enhancer, 6 mL - $68

I am always wary of lash products because some of them can darken the color of your iris over time. My eyes are a lighter brown/hazel sort of color and I would like to keep them that way! From my research, the ingredient blamed for this darkening is bimatoprost. I always like to check serums for this specific thing. This list appears to be free of bimatoprost and instead is a concentrated mix of peptides and proteins. This stuff can take 4+ weeks to kick in, but I have been using it on my eyebrows (yep, you can use it there too!) for a few days now and at the very least they feel shinier and thicker.

Verdict

I don't think I would classify this month's BoxyCharm as one of my favorites of the year, even with a value of $238. I did really love the gorgeous brushes and I am excited to try the lash serum out for a longer period of time. The shadows were pretty but a little dull and I just can't get excited about that Kate Somerville cream. I also did like the mascara, but, at the end of the day, black mascara is something I already own a lot of.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.
