DateBox Club July 2022 Review
When I first received the July DateBox Club, the first thing I noticed was that it looked to be another game night box. We didn't enjoy the previous game box, so I was a bit wary that this one would follow a similar trend. I'm happy to report that this one was much better than the last! In addition to the game, it also had a couple's journal to fill out which was actually a really cute surprise. I had never done something like this with my husband, so thought it might be a really great keepsake to look back on down the road. The DateBox Club also included some fun cotton candy munchies and a little candle! So all in all, I was excited to give this box a go!
The Date
Ok, so in total transparency, my husband and I are actually not big "game" people. We will play them on occasion, but unless we have a group of friends over and we all decide to play, we rarely pull them out and play each other just one on one. (Although, pull up some old school Mario and the competition is on all night!) We wanted to give this one a fair shot though, so opened up the Rally Roll game and gave it a whirl.
The idea is to get the most points without "busting" and losing it all. There are six dice in total, five smaller ones with numbers and colors and one larger one with just the colors. You have to roll all six dice at the same time, and as long as you get one smaller one with a matching color to the larger dice, you can add up those points and keep rolling. You also have the option to stop and "bank" those numbers and then start again on your next turn. If you roll without getting any of the smaller dice to match the larger die's color than you lose any points not "banked" from a previous turn. It's basically similar to almost every other dice game you've played, but with it's only little color twist. We had a lot of fun playing it together, but I think my kids enjoyed it even more the next day! They loved playing each other so much that we decided to pack it for our upcoming family vacation.
DateBox Club also included a couple of Truth or Dare cards that you could play with the larger die from the Rally Roll game. This section of the date is more for people who are actually dating and still getting to know each other. It didn't really work for my husband and I since we have been together for so long, but I thought the truth section was really well done and had some decent questions like, "Teleport us anywhere in the world for a date night, where do we go?" and "If animals could talk, which one would you have a conversation with?" (Which, by the way, my answer was spider...weird I know...but I'd really love to know if they are all out to scare the crap out of me and possibly kill me or if they just think it's funny when I run away screaming like a little girl.)
After the game, we decided to start filling out the couple's journal. I say start, because it's actually pretty long and not anything you are going to finish in one night. It's really cute though and had some thoughtful pages to fill out. This is definitely something I could see us finishing and then pulling out one night years down the road with a bottle of wine and comparing how things have changed (or stayed the same!). It had things to fill out like a couples bucket list, wishes for each other, and couples promises. This would be great for a newly wed couple to fill out and look back on, but honestly, it can be done at anytime. My husband and I have been married for 14 years (known each other for 20) and we still enjoyed filling this out and reading each others. It was great bonding time and actually really great to get back to our marriage "roots".
The Ambiance
Of course, no date is complete without a little ambiance! DateBox Club also included a small candle called summer rain. I wasn't the biggest fan of the smell, (had a bit of a grandma potpourri vibe going on), but it wasn't overwhelming and I'm always a sucker for candles.
The box also included a bag of cotton candy! I've always been a fan of this sugary cloud treat, so was excited to see this. It obviously wasn't as fluffy as you get at the carnivals, but it tasted just like the real deal! Of course, I only got a few bites in before my kids zipped over and begged for some as well, but the entire family enjoyed this little added treat. A great addition!
The Verdict
I thought this box was really well done. I loved that it had features for everyone regardless of where they were in their relationship. Whether you have been married for decades or just starting out, there was something for everyone to enjoy...even the kids apparently! This was a great box this month and I would definitely recommend it.
